Books

From a critical reading of the war memories of Carlos Selvagem, we analyse the contours of the Portuguese participation in the Great War, particularly in the war theatre of the Portuguese colony of Mozambique.
This paper analyses the role of the chain of command, both political and military; the erratic processes of mobilization and readiness of the troops; the deficient logistical and strategic planning in the African territory; the unpreparedness of the Portuguese Expeditionary Force, considered to be the main motives for the clamorous failure of this military mission.
We also provide a characterization of the war in the unexplored African context, decisively marked by the dificulties derived from the climate, tropical diseases and the interaction with the existing populations.
We conclude with the anti-interventionist arguments, derived from the Portuguese colonial rhetoric, and despite the contrast observed from the realities that the expeditionary forces found in these overseas territories.

Conferences
Spearheading that programme and the overall investment agenda, one can find a group of Portuguese engineers that from the 1870s onwards could only find a job in Africa. These men were central to Fontismo, as they had the knowledge, not only to survey the territory, the rivers, the mountains, but also to study and implement the tools to domesticate the African wilderness: roads, dams, telegraphs, and of course railways.
Between the 1870s – since the first public works expeditions in Africa ordered by the Portuguese government – and the 1930s – when the newly empowered dictatorship implemented a shift in the Portuguese colonial paradigm – different Portuguese engineers did surveys of the African landscape, wrote reports recommending the construction of large public works, elaborated records accounting the construction of those works, and took photographs testifying the advancement of technological systems in the Portuguese colonies of Africa. These activities contributed to the construction of the idea of a Neo Portugal through a technological intervention aimed at “domesticating” the colonial territories. These documents had different disseminations: some were widely publicized in Portuguese journals (of the Association of Portuguese Engineers or the Society of Geography of Lisbon), while others were drawn just for the eyes of the decision-makers at the ministry of Marine and Overseas. Notwithstanding, all were testimonies of the vision of the Portuguese engineers about Africa.
In this paper, we aim to use these sources (either published in the aforementioned journals or kept in the Portuguese Overseas Historical Archive) to analyse the representations and expectations of Portuguese engineers about the Portuguese colonies of Angola and Mozambique; how these were met in the mainland; to what extent were they important for the construction of the perception of Africa in Portugal; to what extent were the expectations met; and how these representations evolved throughout the years. In the end we aim to make a general appraisal of the contribution of these men to the Anthropocene in Africa: to what extent (practical or theoretical) where they responsible for a “cumulative impact of civilization” that promoted transformations of landscape, urbanization, and resource extraction and thus changed the relationship between humans and nature in the Africa setting.
