Avital Barak
Avital Barak is an art curator and a scholar of culture, movement, and performance. Her Ph.D. from Tel Aviv University (2023) focused on the varieties of resistance visible in manifestations of movement in the public space. Her curatorial work includes exhibitions based on research, public events, and leading transdisciplinary research groups. In the last decade, she curated solo exhibitions and group exhibitions based on research in Israel and abroad and published articles in prominent journals and publications in Hebrew and English. Since 2017, she has been co-developing a “collective investigation” method at the Institute of Public Presence (CDA).
Her current project, as a research fellow in CineLab IFILNOVA, delves into the revolutionary moving image archives of the liberation movements of the 1960s and 1970s. It focuses on the relationship between the militants, intellectuals, and artists who took an active role in those struggles and the interrelation between armed struggle as resistance and its representations, past and present. The research aims to study resistance in the entanglement of political and aesthetic action out of interest in understanding the changing position of artists and the moving image concerning political struggles as well as the dramatic shift in the perception of armed struggle and political violence in liberal public discourse, academia, and the art world.

The exhibition What Are You Facing? was created following a group journey in search of traces of the Ottoman Empire in the local region. Four-hundred years crammed into one undivided, vague chunk of time. Its defined – ostensibly clear – boundaries actually blur it. However, its tangible traces are evident in everything: the space we live in is stamped with tughra, the sultan’s seal. It is a broken seal, its parts scattered, masked, without context, and it cannot be put back together. But tracing it reveals a different story – a story of erasure, of neglect, of denial; of an empire that was no better than other empires – in this empire, too, there was violence, exclusion, corruption, decay. Yet observing it enables us to look differently at the space around us: to expand the lens of our gaze not only to what we are facing, but also towards ourselves.
New nationalisms, toxic patriotisms and systems of exclusion have been on the rise for the last decade, reinforced by technology and rooted in colonialism, slavery, and class oppression. Our time offers a unique twist on these age-old structures: rhetorics of decolonization are now weaponized by autocratic regimes, just as they are normalized in the phantasmagoria of cultural practices. This book is the result of a (self-)critical project of discussions, workshops, exhibitions, and meetings in Cologne, Poland, Israel, Hong Kong, and Chicago.

Books
The eight articles that comprise this book are accompanied by a collection of both popular and rare historical images of the Temple Mount, located in institutional Israeli archives and in private collections. In addition, it includes contemporary photographic art works that engage with the historical collection and were presented at the photography gallery of the Bezalel Academy in 2016.
The book is a cross between an academic volume, a memorial album and an exhibition catalogue. It presents original and critical research, but also strives to break out beyond the boundaries of academia by its accessible form and language. It aesthetics recall memorial albums, but it also seeks to undermine the authority of memory such albums pertain to possess. It is an exhibition catalogue, but the exhibition itself is borderless and without a speci c time frame, as it is still growing.
Each of the articles included in the book focuses on a different visual arena in Israel, using it to examine the ideologies and narratives that frame the presence of Temple Mount. They adopt a critical position towards the iconic status of the site, peeling away and politicizing its mythical imagery.
