Στις μέρες μας, ο πολιτισμικός γραμματισμός, δηλαδή η ικανότητα κατανόησης και εκτίμησης της πολυ... more Στις μέρες μας, ο πολιτισμικός γραμματισμός, δηλαδή η ικανότητα κατανόησης και εκτίμησης της πολυπλοκότητας των διαφορετικών πολιτισμών αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι για την ευημερία όλων των σύγχρονων κοινωνιών. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, αναγνωρίζεται όλο και περισσότερο η σημασία του ως απαραίτητο συστατικό της αγωγής των μικρών παιδιών, καθώς συμβάλλει στην καλλιέργεια συμπεριληπτικών και ενσυναισθητικών αξιών και στάσεων. Για τον λόγο αυτό, οι παιδαγωγοί που εργάζονται σε δομές αγωγής και φροντίδας στην πρώιμη παιδική ηλικία, θα πρέπει να φροντίζουν όχι μόνο για τη μετάδοση γνώσεων στα παιδιά σχετικά με τους διαφορετικούς πολιτισμούς, αλλά και για την διαμόρφωση ολόκληρης της κοσμοθεωρίας τους, αφού βρίσκονται σε ένα κρίσιμο αναπτυξιακό στάδιο κατά το οποίο διαμορφώνονται θεμελιώδεις αξίες και στάσεις. Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τα παραπάνω, η παρούσα εργασία αποσκοπεί στη διερεύνηση του τρόπου με τον οποίο οι παιδαγωγοί αντιλαμβάνονται τον πολιτισμικό γραμματισμό και τον ενσωματώνουν στην παιδαγωγική διαδικασία. Για την επίτευξη του σκοπού αυτού, κατασκευάστηκε ένα ερωτηματολόγιο που απευθυνόταν σε παιδαγωγούς πρώιμης παιδικής ηλικίας και συνδύαζε την ποσοτική (κλειστού τύπου ερωτήσεις και ερωτήσεις τύπου Likert) και την ποιοτική ανάλυση (ανοιχτού τύπου ερωτήσεις). Τα δεδομένα που συλλέχθηκαν αναλύθηκαν με τη χρήση του SPSS για τα ποσοτικά στοιχεία και της θεματικής ανάλυσης για τα ποιοτικά. Τα ευρήματα της μελέτης, προσφέρουν πολύτιμες γνώσεις για τους υπεύθυνους χάραξης πολιτικής και τους παιδαγωγούς, τονίζοντας τη σημασία του πολιτισμικού γραμματισμού στην ανάπτυξη μιας πιο περιεκτικής και πολιτισμικά ευαισθητοποιημένης γενιάς παιδιών, ενώ παράλληλα αναδεικνύουν τις παιδαγωγικές πρακτικές που εφαρμόζονται στις δομές αγωγής και φροντίδας για την καλλιέργειά της.

Στην παρούσα εργασία αναλύεται η σημασία που έχουν οι ρουτίνες στην πρώιμη παιδική ηλικία, τόσο σ... more Στην παρούσα εργασία αναλύεται η σημασία που έχουν οι ρουτίνες στην πρώιμη παιδική ηλικία, τόσο στο οικογενειακό περιβάλλον, όσο και στις δομές αγωγής και φροντίδας. Από τις πρώτες ημέρες της ζωής του παιδιού, οι ρουτίνες διαδραματίζουν βασικό ρόλο στη δημιουργία μοτίβων προβλεψιμότητας και ασφάλειας, επηρεάζοντας θετικά τη γνωστική, συναισθηματική και κοινωνική ευημερία των παιδιών. Στην αντίθετη περίπτωση, ένα περιβάλλον με έλλειψη σε σταθερές ρουτίνες μπορεί να προκαλέσει στο παιδί άγχος και δυσκολία προσαρμογής. Ως προς το περιβάλλον των βρεφονηπιακών σταθμών, οι ρουτίνες αποτελούν μέρος της παιδαγωγικής διαδικασίας, υποστηρίζοντας την αυτονομία, την αυτορρύθμιση και την κοινωνική αλληλεπίδραση των παιδιών. Η εργασία επικεντρώνεται επίσης στις «ρουτίνες φροντίδας», οι οποίες αποτελούν σημαντικό μέρος της καθημερινότητας στις δομές αγωγής και ενισχύουν την ανάπτυξη υγιών σχέσεων και συναισθηματικής αυτορρύθμισης του παιδιού. Τέλος, επισημαίνεται ότι οι ρουτίνες αποτελούν πηγή γνώσεων και εμπειριών για το παιδί και για αυτό θα πρέπει να διαμορφώνονται ως διασκεδαστικές και ελκυστικές δραστηριότητες, ώστε να μην αντιμετωπίζονται ως υποχρεωτικές και βαρετές, αλλά ως ευκαιρίες για μάθηση και ανάπτυξη.

Previous literature acknowledges the importance of grocery exhibits and relevant learning centres in the cognitive and socio-cultural development of children, but rarely addresses broader social justice issues. Educators’ narratives were analyzed using the Capability Approach to examine how children’s play experiences relate to Nussbaum’s central human functional capabilities. Thematic analysis indicated that interactions associated with payment transactions and budgeting concepts, healthy eating and consumerism, as well as cooperation in running the shop were instrumental in facilitating social justice awareness and developing a great variety of the central human capabilities. The nursery environment seemed to enable a more agentic stance and a stronger understanding of social justice-related issues, while practitioners’ prompts and an implicit pedagogical agenda towards active citizenship enriched play-based pedagogy with social justice objectives.

This study took place in the University of West Attica, Department of Early Childhood Education a... more This study took place in the University of West Attica, Department of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) in Greece, founded in 2018, which focuses on the learning, development and education of children under four years of age. Greece has a split early childhood education system, and there is minimal attention given to infant and toddler research. This study explored students’ views before and after their final practicum through two online questionnaires to identify the effectiveness of the undergraduate programme of studies in preparing ECEC educators for their professional roles. The study also interviewed in-service educators in their first year of employment and graduates who have completed their practicum in a foreign country under the Erasmus+ programme. Findings revealed an overall satisfaction with the existing programme and the effectiveness of the final practicum. Students who completed an Erasmus+ practicum were particularly positive about their experience and the knowledge they acquired, and they encouraged more students to apply for the Erasmus+ mobility scheme. All participants provided useful insights and suggestions for further improving the programme, such as extending the placement and practicum. Implications for ECEC educators’ education are discussed, along with recommendations for future research.

In early childhood education pupils have the opportunity to come into first contact with the hist... more In early childhood education pupils have the opportunity to come into first contact with the historical events and acquire the first historical knowledge. However, research has shown the existence of strong nationalist elements and the viewing of the nation as a homogeneous entity and an unchanged Hellenism. The Greek educational system does not take into account the cultural background of students coming from other countries. This issue is the reason for conducting this survey, which studied the views of prospective teachers on national celebrations, namely their role and content. Their views on speeches, on the reproduction of national identity, on national and political education and the institution of parades in the context of the multicultural school are also explored. The issue of research considers that prospective teachers agree with the conduct of national celebrations in multicultural schools, but in a way that should include other cultural groups as well. The survey was conducted in spring of 2014, using a questionnaire with sixty close questions. The sample of research consists of 120 students of the departments of primary and preschool education in the Faculties of Education in Thessaloniki and Alexandroupoli and the department of Early Childhood education in Thessaloniki (A.T.E.I.). According to the research results, the celebration of national holidays in schools should not be abolished as national holidays contribute to pupils learning about the history of the country and maintain historical memory. What should be done, however, is to change the way national holidays are presented in schools and the specific values they promote to pupils.

Daily routines in nurseries are among the key elements of their program. Specifically, routines a... more Daily routines in nurseries are among the key elements of their program. Specifically, routines are essential to the function of nurseries, while providing children with stability and a safe environment for exploration and learning experiences. However, compliance with health protocols for covid-19 has brought about significant changes in the way they operate. The aim of this study is to explore the views of 31 educators working in nurseries in Attica (Greece) with children under the age of 3, on how the restrictions they must adhere to have affected the quality of their daily routines and, by extension, the children themselves. A semi-structured interview was chosen for data collection. The results of the survey showed that the quality of the children's morning welcome, morning circle, play corners, outdoor play, outdoor walks, lending library and lunch routine, have deteriorated. In addition, educators report that children feel disorganized and unsafe to explore the environment and have limited learning experiences. Finally, the results of this study may contribute to the scientific literature on the effects of covid-19 and provide useful information for educators.

Citizenship education is one of the most important issues in education around the world. In recen... more Citizenship education is one of the most important issues in education around the world. In recent years, many organizations such as UNICEF and OECD have highlighted the importance of developing the necessary skills in children, so that they can become active citizens who participate in society and contribute to its well-being. However, citizenship education for preschool children is often neglected, as educators consider them to be young and incapable to fully understand the concepts involved. The present study focuses on the implementation of an educational action research in 16 children of a multicultural kindergarten in Northern Greece, in order to cultivate skills that will make them active citizens. More specifically, it examines in what ways the educational actions developed can contribute to citizenship education and what are the possible learning outcomes for global citizenship, solidarity, and diversity for preschool children. The educational action research method was chosen as the most appropriate method to conduct the research. The results of the research showed that when the educational actions are implemented frequently, they can have encouraging results in the cultivation of citizenship in children and that children can understand to a significant extent the concepts of global citizenship, solidarity and diversity. Finally, the results of the action research can provide useful information to educators for the implementation and design of similar educational actions.

In recent years, Greece has received very high numbers of migrants and refugees from the Middle E... more In recent years, Greece has received very high numbers of migrants and refugees from the Middle East, North Africa and Ukraine, including children of all ages. This new and evolving socio-cultural environment has an impact on education, since the application of multicultural principles in education is considered necessary for the development of multicultural respect. To achieve that level of mutual respect, the role of educators is particularly important. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate the views of 196 educators working in Greek nurseries on the difficulties they face in implementing multicultural education in young children (children under the age of 3) and the perspectives of that method. Furthermore, the research investigates the goals set by educators, the practices they choose and how competent they consider themselves in implementing multicultural education. A questionnaire with closed-ended questions was used to collect the data. The results of the survey show that educators mainly choose fairy tales/books for managing and highlighting cultural diversity, while cooperation with parents is practiced to a very small extent. As for the difficulties that the educators face during that process, these are mainly attributed to the xenophobic attitudes of native parents. Finally, they feel that their knowledge on multicultural education is inadequate, and they express the need for appropriate training. In summary, the survey can provide useful information for educators on multicultural education in the nursery and can be used as a guide for their future training on that field.

The purpose of this case study is to investigate the perception and social skills of pupils with ... more The purpose of this case study is to investigate the perception and social skills of pupils with regard to the value of citizenship as it is documented in Florina’s borders area. Using the visual questionnaire, which had been produced for this specific research, we focus on the children's trace that are made or reproduced by them about citizenship. We apply the grammatical design method of Gunther Kress & Theo van Leeuwen (2010) in order to study both the “presence and the absence” of signifiers as well as the linguistic significance. Thus, the question arising in the socio-semiotic analysis of the children's paintings, is whether and to what extent the narrative element of children's visual writing reproduces the elements of adult culture. In this case study, we are looking for narrative scenarios that are likely to reproduce citizenship. It seems that these visual narratives are coming from the pupils “cultural capital”, as adults, parents, guardians, teachers, as well as Mass Media operators perceive it.

According to Jochum (2005), the concept of citizenship is perceived through three dominant theore... more According to Jochum (2005), the concept of citizenship is perceived through three dominant theoretical approaches that distinguish between a) a situation attributable to the state, b) an identity, and c) a practice that is determined by rights and obligations and is shaped by a common public culture. Following this threedimensional theoretical scheme as well as postmodern pedagogical practices, we investigate the perception and social competence of preschool pupils in terms of the value of citizenship in the prefecture of Florina in Greece (2016-2017). The research questions that constitute this presentation refer to the recognition of citizenship as: a) the ability to recognize social values in visual material, b) the ability to recognize political values. The case study was chosen as a research method for collecting the material. For the classification, analysis and processing of the multimodal material, the mixed approach as quantitative and qualitative classroom discourse analysis has been chosen. The innovative aspect of this research are the visual questionnaire and the oral school material (mainly by the infants) as well as by the pupils of preschool education, which has been selected for the first time in a national case study.

The covid-19 pandemic affected the lives of all people worldwide. The unprecedented situations fa... more The covid-19 pandemic affected the lives of all people worldwide. The unprecedented situations faced by people of all ages affected their mental and physical health. In this context, children are an especially vulnerable group as their development is in full swing and they have not yet acquired the skills to cope with stressful situations. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the views of 31 educators working in Attica (Greece) regarding the changes they observe in the development of children under the age of 3. In addition, the research addresses the type of activities that cannot be carried out in nurseries due to covid -19 health protocols, the alternative methods used by the educators and their suggestions for future interventions. The research instrument used was the semi-structured interview and the data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the study show that the educators observe changes in the social, emotional and language domains of children's development. Specifically, children seem to suffer from strong attachment, anxiety, hyperactivity, inability to regulate emotions, fear of social interactions, and slow vocabulary development-especially foreign students. The researchers anticipate that the results of the present study will contribute to the investigation of the developmental implications of the covid-19 pandemic in children under 3 years old and provide useful information to educators for future interventions in nurseries.

Fairy tales are undoubtedly the most popular type of literature for children, as they offer pleas... more Fairy tales are undoubtedly the most popular type of literature for children, as they offer pleasure and allow them to travel to unique and fantasy places. However, their value is not limited to entertainment alone, as there are multiple additional benefits from children's exposure to fairy tales: Fairy tales can contribute to children's holistic development and therefore they are an excellent pedagogical tool for educators. The aim of this study is to evaluate the views of 213 educators working in nursery schools in Attica (Greece), on the contribution of fairy tales in the development of children under 3 years of age, using a research questionnaire with close-ended questions. Also, this study explores the techniques used by the educators to introduce fairy tales in the pedagogical process, and the domains targeted to attain children's development by using these fictional narrations. The results of the research show that educators use the fairy tale in children under 3 years of age, primarily to improve the domain of their language development and the most common technique for introducing the fairy tale into pedagogical practice is simply storytelling. Finally, the present study attempts to contribute to research bibliography, showing the importance of fairy tales to a child's development and at the same time fill the research gap that exists for children under 3 years of age.

The transition of a child from home to the nursery marks the passage to a new phase of life not o... more The transition of a child from home to the nursery marks the passage to a new phase of life not only for the child, but also for the whole family. In this process, family is the most important factor in the child's smooth and successful transition to the new environment. In particular, the characteristics of parents and their behaviour during transition seem to have a direct impact on children and the way in which they will face this new challenge. In this context, many nurseries are implementing transition programmes or practices to prepare children and parents to cope with challenges that may arise from this process. The aim of this study is to investigate the views of educators working in nurseries in Attica (Greece) on the characteristics-behaviors of parents that can influence the smooth transition of children under 3 years of age. In addition, the study examines the transition practices, including parental involvement, that are usually put in practice in nurseries in Attica, Greece. The results of the research show that parents' anxiety and their thoughts on transition issues ifluence their childrens' adaption to the nursery environment. Finally, the practices that the educators apply more frequently are mainly related to providing information to parents about the transition process, about the possible behaviours that the child may display and also about issues associated with the operation of the nursery. Implications for practice are also discussed in this paper.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the perspectives of nursery teachers who work in Attica (... more The purpose of this paper is to examine the perspectives of nursery teachers who work in Attica (Greece) about the transition of the children under the age of 3 from home to the nursery. The research was conducted with the quantitative sampling method, using a questionnaire with closed questions; a total of 195 educators were asked to answer a questionnaire using a five-point scale concerning the characteristics of children and the nursery environment which may affect the process of transition. In addition, the study examines whether the demographic characteristics of educators influence their views about transition. In summary, the aim of the study is to fill the existing research gap in Greece regarding the transition of children under the age of 3. The findings of this study suggest that nursery teachers place more emphasis on developing the emotional and social skills of children than skills related to language development and the ability to follow instructions. These findings are implications practitioners to further develop their nurseries transition programme.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια όλο και περισσότερες έρευνες επισημαίνουν τα οφέλη του οπτικού γραμματισμού για τα παιδιά, παρόλα αυτά λαμβάνει σχετικά μικρή ή και μηδαμινή προσοχή στα σημερινά προγράμματα σπουδών. Ο λόγος είναι ότι το σχολείο εστιάζει κυρίως στην παραδοσιακή μορφή γραμματισμού (ανάγνωση, γραφή και λεκτικές μορφές επικοινωνίας), χωρίς να δίνει έμφαση στη μορφή και την ποιότητα των οπτικών δεξιοτήτων ενός μαθητή.
Η παρούσα εργασία επιχειρεί να αναδείξει τη σημασία των οπτικών μηνύματων στο σύγχρονο τρόπο ζωής και συνακόλουθα την ανάγκη για την καλλιέργεια του οπτικού γραμματισμού ακόμα και στα παιδιά της προσχολικής ηλικίας που θα τα οδηγήσει να εξελιχθούν σε κριτικά σκεπτόμενους πολίτες.

Μετά τις τρομοκρατικές επιθέσεις του 2015 στο Παρίσι και την Κοπεγχάγη, οι Υπουργοί Παιδείας της ... more Μετά τις τρομοκρατικές επιθέσεις του 2015 στο Παρίσι και την Κοπεγχάγη, οι Υπουργοί Παιδείας της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή υπέγραψαν τη Διακήρυξη του Παρισιού. Η Διακήρυξη αυτή, προβλέπει τη λήψη μέτρων σε ευρωπαϊκό, εθνικό και τοπικό επίπεδο για την ενίσχυση της εκπαίδευσης (σε όλες τις βαθμίδες) στην ιδιότητα του πολίτη και την προώθηση των κοινών αξιών της ελευθερίας, της αλληλεγγύης και της ισότητας (European Commission, 2016). Φυσικά, η εκπαίδευση στην ιδιότητα του πολίτη δεν είναι πανάκεια ενάντια σε όλα τα κοινωνικά προβλήματα, ωστόσο, αναμένεται ότι μπορεί να συμβάλλει στην ευημερία της κοινωνίας και στην ειρηνική συνύπαρξη των λαών. Ως εκ τούτου, τα παιδιά θα πρέπειαπό πολύ νωρίς να καλλιεργήσουν τις κοινωνικές, διαπροσωπικές και πολιτικές δεξιότητες, αλλά και να συνειδητοποιήσουν τον ρόλο των θεσμών στη σωστή λειτουργία της κοινωνίας (European Commission / Eurydice Brief, 2017). Επομένως, σκοπός της εκπαίδευσης του πολίτη είναι η καλλιέργεια βασικών, γνώσεων και στάσεων που θα βοηθήσουν τους/τις μαθητές/ήτριες μελλοντικά να γίνουν υπεύθυνοι και ενεργοί πολίτες που θα συμμετέχουν στα κοινά του τόπου και στις δημοκρατικές διαδικασίες. Ειδικά στην προσχολική ηλικία, η έμφαση δίνεται περισσότερο στις ικανότητες που σχετίζονται με την εποικοδομητική αλληλεπίδραση με τους άλλους και την προσωπική ανάπτυξη των παιδιών. Προς αυτήν την κατεύθυνση, φαίνεται πως το παιχνίδι -που αποτελεί πηγή χαράς και ευχαρίστησης για το παιδί- μπορεί να συνδράμει, ώστε η εκπαίδευση του πολίτη να επιτύχει τον σκοπό της και τα παιδιά να αναπτύξουν τις απαραίτητες δεξιότητες και στάσεις που θα οικοδομήσουν τον «πολιτικό εαυτό» τους.

The Greek educational system does not take into account the cultural background of students coming from other countries. This issue is the reason for conducting this survey, which studied the views of prospective teachers on national celebrations, namely their role and content. Their views on speeches, on the reproduction of national identity, on national and political education and the institution of parades in the context of the multicultural school are also explored. The issue of research considers that prospective teachers agree with the conduct of national celebrations in multicultural schools, but in a way that should include other cultural groups as well. The survey was conducted in spring of 2014, using a questionnaire with sixty close questions. The sample of research consists of 120 students of the departments of primary and preschool education in the Faculties of Education in Thessaloniki and Alexandroupoli and the department of Early Childhood education in Thessaloniki (A.T.E.I.). According to the research results, the celebration of national holidays in schools should not be abolished as national holidays contribute to pupils learning about the history of the country and maintain historical memory. What should be done, however, is to change the way national holidays are presented in schools and the specific values they promote to pupils.

Τα τελευταία χρόνια όλο και περισσότερες έρευνες επισημαίνουν τα οφέλη του οπτικού γραμματισμού για τα παιδιά, παρόλα αυτά λαμβάνει σχετικά μικρή ή και μηδαμινή προσοχή στα σημερινά προγράμματα σπουδών. Ο λόγος είναι ότι το σχολείο εστιάζει κυρίως στην παραδοσιακή μορφή γραμματισμού (ανάγνωση, γραφή και λεκτικές μορφές επικοινωνίας), χωρίς να δίνει έμφαση στη μορφή και την ποιότητα των οπτικών δεξιοτήτων ενός μαθητή.
Η παρούσα εργασία επιχειρεί να αναδείξει τη σημασία των οπτικών μηνύματων στο σύγχρονο τρόπο ζωής και συνακόλουθα την ανάγκη για την καλλιέργεια του οπτικού γραμματισμού ακόμα και στα παιδιά της προσχολικής ηλικίας που θα τα οδηγήσει να εξελιχθούν σε κριτικά σκεπτόμενους πολίτες.
