Josep Carner went from being a very celebrated poet in his lifetime, when he was known as 'Prmcep de Is Poetes', and a figurehead of the cultural resistance against Franco's dictatorship, to mythic obscurity by the time of his death in 1970, a few weeks after a short visit to Catalonia, the only break of a long exile. In fact, he had disappeared from the public eye after his diplomatic career took off in the 1920s, and especially after the Civil War sent him into exile, first to Mexico and after, 1945, to Brussels, the birthplace of his second wife, the eminent critic of Symbolism Emilie Noulet. In 1995 a Symposium was organized at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona by Jaume Subirana to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Josep Carner's death. Now Subirana has edited the proceedings in an attractive volume which includes papers read at a similar event that took place at the Universitat de Girona the same week. Contributions fall into three categories: biographical issues (such as the articles by Albert Manent and Jaume Medina), themes and influences, and rhetorical readings of Carner's poetry and prose. Jaume Aulet presents a fascinating account of minor 'noucentista' poets from the second decade of this century. His findings could have been developed into a complex study had he gone farther from his principal aim, that of accumulating data. Dolors Oller proposes a way of reading Carner's poetry through three formal types: iconic, ideofogical, and allegorical. Josep-Anton Fernandez offers a reading ot Absencia in the light of Freud's theories on mourning and melancholia, according to which this crucial book of Carner's becomes a fundamental expression of the experience of exile. Fernandez also establishes an insightful correlation between exile and the AIDS epidemic, the holocaust, and the search for the Argentinean 'desaparecidos'. His presentation is both compelling and convincing. Enric Sulla proposes the examination of a commonplace about Carner's poetry (inaugurated by Carles Riba), that his knowledge of English poetry made him change as a poet with the result that Catalan poetry changed following his lead. He concludes asserting the need for a real, ideological, reading of this poetry. Joan de Deu Domenech offers a comprehensive bibliography of Carner's works. Nevertheless, this bibliography should be supplemented with at least the many translations by Carner from the 1920s which Editorial Selecta reissued in the 1950s. These translations are mentioned by Jaume Subirana in a thorough piece on Carner's dealings with Editorial Selecta where he uses extremely interestin9 material such as unpublished letters that he has been able to recover from Selecta s archives. In a footnote one should also mention that this volume had unexpected free publicity when an erratic journalist decided to blast the prefacer of the volumeDolors Oller for her consideration of Carner as a major figure in European literature. This coincided with the publication in Spanish and Catalan of H. Bloom's pretentious book on canon issues, which had a tremendous success in Catalonia because he granted a few Catalan authors honorary membership of his Author-ofthe-Canon-Club. This celebration is only the second after the centennial activities of 1984 and the papers gathered here offer the opportunity to glimpse the new generation of Catalan critics and what (if anything) new they have to say about this writer. This article is organized around three groups of ‘citations’ from architectural forms, texts, images, which generate three options of imagination, representation and reading of space: ruins, circular constructions, and rhetoric (in particular figures of repetition). I discuss the story of Borges “Las ruinas circulares” and examples from Iain Sinclair, London orbital (2002), Gianni Biondillo and Michele Monina, Tangenziali. Due viandanti ai bordi della città (2010), and Nicolò Bassetti, Sapo Matteucci, Sacro romano GRA (2013). The circularity generates a repetitive and disparate look allowing the observation of a complementary rhythm of destruction and construction characteristic of progress in the world.

This article is based on a reflection on the concept of frontier, to present a double premise, that everyday life has undergone a radical transformation in the last twenty years and that this transformation has been particularly striking in the Mediterranean area. An overview of several ways of analysing everyday life is presented, complemented with the discussion on some examples from contemporary Spanish cinema. There is an emphasis on the common attitude of the exiled and the emigrated, that is the defence before a foreign culture, thus perpetuating a life in the margins, emphasizing that daily life, in its apparent difficulty of being detected, has a marginal centrality. Il campo di studio sullo spazio, la citta e la sua rappresentazione artistica sono diventate intensamente popolate negli ultimi anni. Questo e un motivo di rallegramento per tutti gli studiosi attenti ad approcci che riguardano l’interdisciplinarita. Il libro Thinking Barcelona: Ideologies of a Global City e un importante contributo alle attuali discussioni critiche sullo spazio e la letteratura. Si tratta di uno studio molto originale, e di ampia portata, che dara forma alle discussioni della globalizzazione postmoderna nei prossimi anni. Illas sostiene che Barcellona e una citta moderna e postmoderna, globale e locale, imprenditoriale e attenta al merchandising, che ha eseguito un modello di gestione socialista della complessita urbana. Il caso della gestione urbanistica di Barcellona e diventato un marchio turistico neoliberale, che e cambiato drasticamente dopo il 1986, in preparazione per le Olimpiadi del 1992. Il comune ha avviato originali iniziative nell’industria del turismo, per lo sviluppo immobiliare e anche nel campo della cultura. Lo studio de Illas e ben fondato su modelli di riflessione teorica marxista, decostruzionista, e modelli di studi urbani e, quindi, il libro diventa un potente contributo ai campi di Studi Ispanici e Catalani. Per di piu offre pregevoli spunti che aprono dei collegamenti con il campo piu ampio dei Cultural Studies, l’urbanistica, l’architettura e la geografia a causa della conoscenza e discussione dei dibattiti teorici attuali sulla questione dello spazio e per l’ampia varieta di fonti usate da Edgar Illas. A general overview of Catalan writer Albert Sánchez Piñol's work, serves as a prologue to excerpts of the conversation with him that took place in the Aula Magna at the Università di Bologna on October 31, 2014. Sánchez Piñol is a unique writer in the Catalan literary scene for two reasons: he writes books that are real page-turners, and he has managed to successfully introduce the fantastic in Catalan literature. More recently his interest has moved to historical novel closely related to contemporary political events.

This article proposes an analysis of Barcelona’s metro system following David Pike’s threshold concept, key to the topography of the ‘vertical city’. This will be done through reading maps and literary texts that illustrate three closely related issues: an interpretation of Barcelona’s metro network and its meanings; the disappearance of some metro stations and underground spaces, such as hidden connecting corridors, which create a shallow presence of the past into the present, examples of urban spaces that are buried and forgotten; and subway life as portrayed in some literary texts with particular emphasis on the use of mythology.

Il presente articolo analizza e descrive le rappresentazioni cinematografiche dell’isola di Formentera in parallelo a modelli di sviluppo economico, sottolineando l’importanza dell’eco- cinema. Viene analizzato, in particolare, L’Illa de l’holandès di Sigfrid Monleón (2001) assieme ad altri film e documentari ambientati a Formentera, che forniscono una “prospettiva diversa” sull’isola. Essi permettono, infatti, di scoprire la Formentera “reale” che è stata sepolta dall’invasione del turismo, e lo fanno tramite una visione elegiaca, nostalgica, ambientalista, e una sostenibile, che gioca con nuove tecniche di ripresa e propone, oltre a modelli di impegno politico che si rifanno al cinema del passato, una revisione pensando al futuro. I film girati sull’isola rappresentano, ciascuno in modo distinto ma complementare, lo strumento che rende possibile la coesistenza nonché la comprensione dei diversi strati che compongono la realtà di Formentera.

Irradiaciones. Estudios de literatura y cine pone a prueba una de las funciones de la crítica, en clave comparatista, es decir abrir las conexiones entre las obras literarias, artísticas, cinematográficas, escritas en un lenguaje que puede ser en apariencia jeroglífico, y los lectores. Aclarar, relacionar.
El autor parte del convencimiento de que es necesario ser comparatista. La literatura ibérica será estudiada en clave comparatista o no existirá, no será un motivo creíble de estudio, hundida en su provincia. Podría ser un elemento importante de la identidad cultural europea, un proyecto como sabemos todavía en construcción, pero que podría surgir de la constelación de las diversas literaturas nacionales. El estudio de la literatura no se puede construir de manera unívoca, a partir de una sola perspectiva, sino que debe tener cuenta del carácter de sistema, de la complejidad. Esto lo han hecho los mejores de los críticos e historiadores que han abierto caminos de estudio y lectura, entre la historia y la crítica, entre un enfoque local y uno mundial. Este es el sentido fundamental de estas «irradiaciones», el establecimiento de conexiones quizás insospechadas, siempre presentes entre textos, autores, períodos. Los ejemplos seleccionados abarcan diversos ejemplos de interrelación artística, el sentido plural de cineastas como Almodóvar y Lucrecia Martel, aspectos de la obra de Pedro Salinas y Jorge Guillén y, en clave contemporánea, de Pere Gimferrer.
