During the last decade several papers have been published to estimate the relative sea-level chan... more During the last decade several papers have been published to estimate the relative sea-level change from coastal archaeological indicators in many locations of the Italian coasts and the Mediter-ranean Sea. Anyway, the use of the archaeological information has been poorly focused for Middle Ages and the Bronze Age, due to a few of available coastal installations for these periods. In this paper, we focus on two areas of the Mediterranean, namely the coasts of Malta island and Bari, in Apulia (Southern Italy), that displays coastal archaeological markers of the Bronze age and Middle ages, respectively. The elevation of the selected markers were compared against the latest model prediction of Lambeck et al. (2011). Our observations indicate that Malta is tectonically stable or slightly subsiding at smaller rates. The palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the coastlines at different time windows for his area, are in agreement with the timing of the mammals colonization of the island, occurred during Pleistocene. For Apulia, we show and discuss an archaeological maker of the Middle Ages, to reconstruct the story of the sea level changes in the last 1000 years at the St. Nicholas Basilica, built in 1087 AD along the coast of Bari. Since this coastal area is unaffected by significant vertical tectonic motion during the last 125 ky, our data detail the timing of the relative sea level rise since the Middle Ages and can be used to improve the predicted sea level curve for this region during the last 1000 years

This is the second record in the Italian Pleistocene of this rare Bovini species, derived from the genus Hemibos of Indian origin.

catalaS'ha estudiat l'adaptacio alimentaria de "Praemegaceros" cazioti (Deperet... more catalaS'ha estudiat l'adaptacio alimentaria de "Praemegaceros" cazioti (Deperet, 1897), en base a la rica mostra trobada als diposits del Pleistoce tarda de la cova de Dragonara (nord-oest de Sardenya, Italia). Amb aquest objecte, s'han pres en consideracio els trets cranials, aixi com el gradient de desgast d'abrasio - atricio (mesodesgast), i els efectes produits a l'esmalt dentari per les particules contingudes als vegetals, per l'acidesa i/o duresa del menjar i per la forca i direccio dels moviments mandibulars (microdesgast). Els resultats de les analisis qualitatives i quantitatives son consistents amb una adaptacio alimentaria a una dieta mixta, tal com tambe ho son algunes caracteristiques cranio-dentaries: en particular, el morro, mes aviat quadrat, les grans arees d'insercio del musculus masseter, el desenvolupament de la prominencia masseterica sobre el M', la profunditat i altura del corpus i ramus a I'angulus mandibulae, la superficie d'insercio reduida del musculus temporalis a la mandibula i les dents hipsodontes. Els resultats de la nostra analisi suggereixen que el cervid de la Cova Dragonara era un animal de dieta mixta, que va incrementar el consum d'herba en comparacio amb el seu possible ancestre EnglishThe dietary adaptation of "Praemegaceros" cazioti (Deperet, 1897) has been investigated on the basis of on the rich sample found in the Late Pleistocene deposits in Dragonara Cave (north-western Sardinia, Italy). To this end, we have taken into consideration cranial features as well as the abrasion-attrition wear gradient (mesowear) and the defects produced on tooth enamel by the particles contained in vegetables, by the acidity and/ or hardness of food and by the strength and direction of jaw movements (microwears). Results of qualitative and quantitative analyses of microwears are consistent with mixed-feeder dietary adaptation, as are some crania-dental features: in particular the rather square muzzle, the large insertion areas of musculus rnassetet; the developed masseteric prominence above M'; the depth and height of corpus and ramus at angulus mandibulae; the reduced insertion surface of musculus temporalis on the jaw and hypsodont teeth. Results of our analyses suggest that the cervid from Dragonara Cave was a mixed-feeder, increasing the consumption of grass as compared to its possible ancestor

Close relationships between some Pleistocene endemic mammals of Calabria and Sicily show that the... more Close relationships between some Pleistocene endemic mammals of Calabria and Sicily show that the utmost end of the Italian peninsula must have been connected with Sicily sometimes during the Pleistocene. On the other hand biogeographical data show that endemisms common to southern Calabria and Sicily are at present represented among animals and plants, while the range of many peninsular species ends before reaching the Serre mountains in Calabria. The data on one hand confirm the dose paleobiogeographical relationships between Calabria extremity and Sicily, on the other suggest the temporary appearance of a natural barrier not very far from Northern Aspromonte. Recent stratigraphical and structural studies on the formations outcropping in the «Fossa di Catanzaro» show that during the Pleistocene the southernmost end of Calabria kept apart from the Italian peninsula for more or less long intervals.

The present article introduces the main aspects of one of the most spectacular phenomena in natur... more The present article introduces the main aspects of one of the most spectacular phenomena in nature: the evolution of insular fauna, particularly the changes in size undergone by insular vertebrates with respect to their mainland ancestors. Some case histories expounding this ‘graded’ pattern are introduced as the dramatic decrease in size of the largest mammals, proboscideans, and hippopotamuses, the incredible increase in size of some rodents, the amazing miniaturization of archaic representatives of our own genus, as well as the spectacular evolutionary patterns in island environments shown by some bovids and deer, reptiles, and birds.

This femur is characterized by morphostructural and functional changes due from one hand to the reduction of the graviportal function as a result of reduced size and from the other to the adaptation at a more speedy also in relatively irregular grounds. Riassunto Viene descritto un femore di Elephas (Palaeoloxodon) creutzburgi (Kuss, 1965) del Pleistocene superiore di Grotta Simonelli (Rethymnon, Creta), caratterizzato da variazioni morfostrutturali e funzionali dovute sia alla riduzione della funzione portante, indotta dalla diminuzione di taglia, sia all'acquisizione di una certa attitudine ad un passo piu agile e veloce che su terreni relativamente accidentati.
