The food habit and ecological balance of fish species in Osun River were investigated for a perio... more The food habit and ecological balance of fish species in Osun River were investigated for a period of 12 months (November 2017 to October 2018) with monthly sampling of water and fish species in the river. Fish were sampled using monofilament gill nets of mesh size between 25mm and 101mm. A total of 4544 individuals belonging to 19 species and 10 families were captured. They were grouped based on their feeding habits into herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. Carnivores dominated the River (38.63%) with Cichlids being the most abundant family (95.10%) and Oreochromis niloticus the most abundant fish species (14.10%). The Forage - Carnivore ratio (F/C) for the dry, wet and combined season was 0.64, 0.34 and 0.48 respectively. T-test showed significant differences (P < 0.05) between all the trophic groupings in relation to seasons. Fish with average length and weight of 4.2cm and 0.4g respectively were stocked at 10 fish per aquarium, acclimatized for 2 weeks and fed twice daily at 5% body weight with 40% crude protein diets. Feeding was stopped 24 hours before bioassay and experimental fingerlings were exposed to test concentrations (treatments) of paraquat dichloride at 0 mg/l (A), 3.33 mg/l (B), 6.66mg/l (C), 10 mg/l (D) and 13.3 mg/l (E) each containing the active ingredient at 0 mg/L, 1.7 x 10 -3 mg/L, 3.3 x 10 -3 mg/L, 5 x 10 -3 mg/L and 6.7 x 10 -3 mg/L respectively with each treatment replicated thrice. It is therefore essential to source for a highly nutritious, cheap and readily available substitute which can supply the farmed fish with necessary dietary requirements for proper growth and development. The study utilised house fly maggots (Musca domestica) cultured from poultry waste at varying inclusion levels of 0 (no inclusion), 25, 50, 75 and 100% (maggot inclusions) to replace fish meal in the diets and replicated thrice. Hence, the use of probiotics which are bio-friendly seems to be a promising alternative. Therefore, the importance of probiotics in fish production was critically reviewed in line with their growth rate, disease treatment, and immune boosting. It was, however, realized that probiotics such as Lactobacillus fermentum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae cultured from maize slurry and palm wine, respectively, could serve as good probiotics, which could enhance faster growth rate and wound-healing rate. Probiotics are, therefore, recommended to the fish farmers so as to increase the profitability of the aquaculture business.

Reports on the wound healing potential of probiotics commonly applied in aquaculture are scanty i... more Reports on the wound healing potential of probiotics commonly applied in aquaculture are scanty in literature. Hence, the wound healing potential of diets fortified with Lactobacillus fermentum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and their combination in Heterobranchus bidorsalis juveniles was evaluated. Ten (10) experimental fish were lacerated (1 cm long and deep) to create artificial wounds. Wound closures were measured on the 4th, 7th, 9th, 12th and the 14th day of the experiment. Histological changes in wound areas were also examined. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA at α0.05. The study revealed that healing percentages and daily healing rates of wounds in lateral and caudal areas of the fish fed on the diet fortified with S. cerevisiae (especially at serial dilution of 102 cfu/mL)) were higher. The histological changes also revealed that the healing process started on day 4 with the extensive granulation tissue formation and fusion of epidermis, while complete healing was achieved on day 12 in the fish fed on the diet fortified with S. cerevisiae and on day 14 in other fish, with multiple epidermal cell layers and the fibrous connective tissue proliferation. Hence, the enrichment of fish diets with S. cerevisiae at serial dilution of (102 cfu/mL) could significantly aid in reducing mortality associated with wound infection in fish farming.
