The scroll containing the so-called De providentia of Philodemus (midollo PHerc. 1670) suffered «scorzatura parziale» and therefore a number of scorze are scattered through the collection, each possessing a different inventory number. Although some scorze that can be matched with PHerc. 1670 have already been identified (viz. PHerc. 1577/1579 and 1100), there may still be more to find. In this paper, I will examine PHerc. 1636: this scorza has interesting features, mainly its paleography and content, that support an attribution to the De providentia.

The Glossarium Epicureum, compiled by H. Usener and published in 1977 by M. Gigante and W. Schmid, is an essential tool for the study of the Epicurean lexicon, although the editions used in the Glossarium were those of Usener’s time, and therefore they are now out of date. An update is surely worthwhile in light of the many new editions of Epicurean texts, especially those of Herculaneum papyri. In this paper, I will present a project to update the Glossarium with modern reference editions of the Herculaneum papyri.

P.Herc. 1670 contains the remains of the final part of the so-called On Providence by Philodemus. The poor state of conservation of the papyrus led previous editors to consider each surviving fragment as being isolated from the others. By virtue of current methodologies for the virtual reconstruction of Herculaneum papyri, new light can be shed on the relationship between fragments of P.Herc. 1670. In this paper, after an examination of the order of the fragments, I will focus on how those belonging to the latter portion of the papyrus can be matched in order to recover nearly complete text columns. The matching will be supported by material, bibliological, and textual evidence.

In the so-called De providentia, Philodemus discusses several cosmological and theological theories attributed mainly to Stoicism. Therefore he often makes use of its technical vocabulary, especially in reference to the divine principle that rules the world on the Stoic view. In this paper, I will focus on three terms, ἀρχιτέκτων, ὁδηγόϲ, and προηγούμενοϲ. I will provide the texts of Philodemus’ De providentia in which each of them can be found and other references to clarify their meaning in Philodemus’ texts.

PHerc. 1670, which preserves a work generally known as De providentia by Philodemus, represents the midollo of a wider scroll. In this paper, after a brief discussion of the fragments of PHerc. 1670, I propose matching the scorze PHerc. 1100 and 1577/1579 with PHerc. 1670, as outer parts of the same scroll. This match is based on paleography, bibliology, and content.
