This paper deals with the reception that Roberto Rossellini’s film "Francesco giullare di Dio" (1... more This paper deals with the reception that Roberto Rossellini’s film "Francesco giullare di Dio" (1950) received in Italy and abroad, with specific reference to judgments conveyed by Franciscans. In particular, it will investigate the way in which Rossellini represented an aspect of Franciscan movement – the spirit of evangelical simplicity – which the evolution of the Order had putted in brackets and what consequences the adoption of a such partial perspective had on the possibility for the film to be accepted by the audiences and catholic culture of sixty years ago.
