At the same time, these two works encompass Brentano’s main areas of interest in philosophy: metaphysics and psychology. The studies comprising this volume examine the relevance of these topics for contemporary philosophical research and substantiate the complexity and the historical dimension of a legacy whose richness and diversity still await full discovery.

Neither phenomenology needs to renounce to its transcendental vocation nor embodied cognitive science must adopt a too strong naturalistic stance in favour of a weakened form of phenomenology, namely phenomenological psychology as the unique viable way of practicing phenomenology in a scientifically acceptable manner. Instead, in the context of a mild or liberal naturalism, based on the recognition of the existence of multiple ontological levels of reality, phenomenological psychology can act as a buffer zone between sciences of mind and transcendental phenomenology. The former should renounce to both the requirement of a linear continuity from natural science to phenomenology, and to the commitment to the physicalist principle of causal closure. The latter should abandon its dogmatic pretention to infallibility as well as its emphasis on consciousness as a self-enclosed domain of being. Husserl's conception of lived body can serve as an example for a mutual collaboration between phenomenology and embodied cognitive science to the extent that it belongs to transcendental subjectivity, since it contributes to the constitution of a world-environment for the cognitive agent, and at the same time can act as a proper theoretical framework for the sensorimotor account.

As with any other artistic technique, painting reveals itself to be the natural extension of a technological attitude already rooted in the sensorimotor devices of the body in action; painting is led to inhabit a world that is of the same nature as corporeal agents, because the objects that populate it share with it the ontological element of the “flesh”. Through Merleau-Ponty’s analyses of Cezanne’s pictorial works, I demonstrate that the main purpose of painting is, analogically with the descriptive analyses made possible by the phenomenological reduction, to render intersubjectively evident the hidden work of vision before its sedimentation in an accomplished perceptual scene. As the experiments of contemporary neuroscience also demonstrate, perception is by and large a reconst...

In particular, my purpose is to challenge the idea that experience is nothing but the product of the brain and that common sense psychology is a theory out of fashion that has to be replaced with the acquisitions of neuroscience. The revaluation of Husserl’s and Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology in the context of the sensorimotor approach (confirmed by the supporters of embodied cognitive science) provides the theoretical framework in which I intend to develop my theory. According to my thesis, the amendability concerns the conditions of action and perception more than their practical exercise. The negotiations we make with the basic features of our environment are developed through a process of continuous corrections which is virtually infinite, although restricted by ecological and temporal limits.

█ Abstract Written on the Skin. Localized Sensations and the Origins of the Bodily Self in Husserl's Phenome-nology-Whence does our sense of bodily ownership arise and what kind of experiential structures make it possible? The sense of belonging that we experience with respect to our body involves the phenomenological level of the lived body as we feel it " from the inside " , i.e. the body that we live from the first-person perspective as a seal of our individuality and as the zero-point of our orientation in the world. Husserl provides a reconstruction of this fundamental way of experiencing our body by means of a regressive phenomenologi-cal analysis that aims at identifying in the tactile sensations of localization the fundamental factor that leads to the synthetic constitution of the lived body. In the final part of this contribution, I will try to pin down an ambit of possible convergence between phenomenological analyses and the most recent experimental approaches in the cognitive sciences, in order to contribute to establishing a productive relationship between both fields.

For this essential link with the whole living organism touch ensures at the highest degree our anchorage to the world and exerts an epistemological supremacy since its cognitive performances contribute to establishing a robust sense of reality, by confronting ourselves with the resistance opposed by the things. in its essential connection with proprioception, kinesthesia and bodily feelings tactile perception constitutes the bodily intentionality in its basic form and therefore assures the mutual interplay between different sensory modalities. another exclusive feature of tactile perception consists in its double function as proprioceptive and exteroceptive direction, as shown by the unique phenomenon of touchant/touché. husserl and merleau-Ponty have devoted their attention to the relevance of this experience in generating the bodily self-awareness in its reflexive structure.
The flourishing of the embodied/embedded approach in contemporary cognitive science goes hand in ... more The flourishing of the embodied/embedded approach in contemporary cognitive science goes hand in hand with the reappraisal of the phenomenological notion of lived body, on the ground of the criticism raised against both the representationalist attitude and the method-ological solipsism of standard cognitive science. From this point of view the interest for the phenomenological philosophy of body was initially guided by Merleau-Ponty, whose approach seemed more attentive than the Husserl's one to the bodily-worldly dimension of subjective experience. Beyond any contraposition between both philosophers, it is true that also Husserl's considerations on the lived body as common power of sensation and action constitute an essential source of inspiration for the contemporary sensorimotor and enactive theories of subjectivity. Husserl's analysis of lived body provides to the exponents of embodied cogni-tive science the theoretical framework for a philosophical legitimization of the sensorimotor approach, since lived body constitutes the zero orientation point that makes possible every perception and action and founds therefore a basic motor intentionality on the ground of the intimate relationship between kinaesthesia and perception. Phenomenology can offer to cog-nitive science a theoretical framework that allows a rigorous description of the manifold ways the subject make experience of the world starting from its embedded/embodied constitution and a regressive analysis that aims at a genetic reconstruction of its development.

I argue that the notion of trace alone doesn’t suffice to give an account of the act side (i.e.quality) of intentionality and that an ontological treatment of the notion of person is requested (within the framework of Husserl’s theory of whole and parts and/or emergentism), since individual subjects play ultimately a crucial role in order to give life to social world.

While Husserl insists on the autonomy of both terms and their irreducibility to the ontological region of natural world, Searle turns his efforts to reconcile this feature with the possibility of explaining it within a naturalistic worldview. After discussing Searle’s objections against phenomenology and its method, I try to demonstrate that Searle’s naturalism is not consistent even in his moderate version. Instead of this I prefer to rehabilitate a “classical” account of intentionality like Husserl’s one, since it provides a more sophisticated ontological framework and is therefore more able to take into account the normative dimension of subjectivity and personal identity.

constitutive basis of personal subject, the living body is an ontologically genuine and epistemologically autonomous experiential layer which can be reduced neither to the sole mental dimension nor to the component of objective body, although the latter is inextricably bound with it. The objective body becomes the only subject of scientific explanation once the naturalistic attitude of cognitive science has been adopted. With this article I will contribute to the attempt to give rise to an integrated approach which takes into account both the phenomenological analyses about the living body and the experimental evidences relative to the cognitive mechanisms that realize the sense of bodily self.
