This systematic review was conducted to examine theories that were adopted or considered in the d... more This systematic review was conducted to examine theories that were adopted or considered in the development of mobile applications for language learning. It aims to provide a holistic overview of major theoretical principles that underpin each developmental study to identify trends and gaps in the synthesised literature. The studies were collected from the Scopus and Web of Science databases as they were the main sources of reputable journals. Primary searches between 2011 and 2020 revealed approximately 158 studies related to the topic under investigation. After further filtering based on the inclusion criteria and removal of duplicates, 39 studies matched the research criteria and were used for further analysis. The analysis revealed that researchers tend to choose to solve problems pertaining to vocabulary learning and learners' motivation through the development of mobile applications for language learning. They preferred to use constructivist-based theories such as situated learning and collaborative learning in guiding their development though behaviourist principles are also dominant. However, very few studies used theories related to language acquisition and learning in the design and development process. Hence, this gap should be given priority in future developmental research within the same scope as the generic learning theories may not be accurately addressing the language learning problems.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced higher education institutions to execute mitigation efforts such... more The COVID-19 pandemic has forced higher education institutions to execute mitigation efforts such as an e-learning mode of instruction to reduce the impact on pedagogical activities. These challenges have raised concerns on students' engagement in e-learning as students are at risk of falling behind in education. However, there is little empirical research focusing on students' engagement in e-learning experiences. The purpose of this study is to investigate students' engagement in e-learning as well as specifically assess their engagement based on gender, age, ethnicity, level of education and field of study in a Malaysian public higher education institution. This study used a non-experimental quantitative research design. Data were collected from a sample of 281 students using the Blended Learning Engagement Questionnaire ©. WINSTEPS Rasch model measurement software was used to determine the reliability and validity of the research instrument. Subsequently, Differential item functioning (DIF) was conducted to assess students' engagement in e-learning as well as specifically assessing student's demographic factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, level of education and field of study. Findings indicate students have high levels of behavioural engagement as compared with cognitive and emotional engagement in e-learning. Further analysis indicated there were differences in students' engagement based on demographic factors such as gender, age, and field of study. This study provides insight into students' engagement in e-learning that will help lecturers to reflect on their own teaching practices. Implications and recommendations for future research are presented.

Hantaran yang mendapat banyak perhatian dalam kalangan pengguna Facebook ini telah mencipta fenomena yang dikenali sebagai penularan, iaitu hantaran yang dikongsikan dengan puluhan ribu pengguna dalam tempoh masa yang singkat dan dengan cara yang lebih cepat berbanding media arus perdana. Kajian lepas telah meneliti hantaran yang tular dalam bidang perniagaan dan kebanyakan hantaran tersebut ditulis dalam bahasa Inggeris. Kajian ini pula bertujuan untuk menganalisis hantaran bahasa Melayu di Facebook yang tular dari aspek kandungan dan struktur linguistik. Melalui kaedah analisis teks, kajian ini melibatkan 100 hantaran Facebook merangkumi pelbagai topik yang telah tular dengan saiz korpus kira-kira 10,000 patah perkataan. Kajian ini merakamkan kandungan dan atribut bahasa setiap hantaran dalam jadual. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa tema utama kandungan hantaran yang tular berunsur nasihat yang berkaitan dengan topik keluarga. Bagi atribut linguistik pula, kekerapan penggunaan kata ganti nama diri adalah sangat tinggi dan dari segi gaya penulisan didapati bahawa penghujahan dan penceritaan ialah gaya penulisan yang paling popular dalam hantaran yang tular. Oleh itu, kajian ini memberikan input kepada penyedia kandungan yang bergiat aktif di media sosial untuk menghasilkan kandungan yang boleh menjangkau lebih ramai pengguna.

The study examined aspects that were spotlighted in news articles on LGBT in Malaysian online new... more The study examined aspects that were spotlighted in news articles on LGBT in Malaysian online newspapers using textual analytic approach. The specific objectives of the study were to (1) determine the aspects of LGBT highlighted in news articles based on the frequency of top ranked words; and (2) analyse the positive and negative coverage of LGBT in the four online newspapers. The Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) software was used to extract high frequency content words in four online newspapers (The Star Online, Free Malaysia Today, MalaysiaKini, and Astro Awani Online). The analysis revealed controversy surrounding LGBT. The aspects of LGBT highlighted in news articles were largely negativity and non-permissiveness towards LGBT, the association of LGBT with Malay and Muslim, and the quotation of government and ministerial sources to comment on LGBT. The prominence of government-linked sources drowned out the voice of activists and advocates of LGBT rights. The textual analytic software analysis also revealed that Astro Awani was markedly different from the other three newspapers in its event-focused reporting on LGBT, mainly because it is a news portal affiliated to a television channel. Astro Awani’s news articles on LGBT were mostly negative, but the other three newspapers attempted to balance positive and negative coverage on LGBT. The study showed that data mining of news articles using textual analytic software can reveal salient aspects of the LGBT issue that is given attention by the newspapers, and may indicate how media shapes readers’ attitudes towards LGBT.

The notion that learners with lower English language fluency tend to be less engaged in universit... more The notion that learners with lower English language fluency tend to be less engaged in university classes still lacks further investigation. Evidence from previous studies was not conclusive and seems to suggest students with lower proficiency in the language are at risk of dropping out. This study aimed to explore the relationship between English fluency and learning engagement among first-year undergraduate students in a Malaysian university. A total of 144 students from 10 faculties participated in the study. Data were collected through a self-reported questionnaire about their English fluency, Malaysian University English Test (MUET) band and their level of engagement in the classroom. Statistical analyses revealed significant correlations in language fluency and learning engagement in which students with higher fluency were more engaged in the classroom. This study also showed students who reported higher level of perceived English language fluency and learning engagement obtained higher grades. In addition, regression analysis revealed that listening and writing skills significantly contributed to the model, which implies fluency in these two skills are more important in university settings.

Although efforts to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic can be lauded, much remains unknown in terms of the challenges that teachers have gone through in fulfilling their roles during emergency remote teaching. The study is a necessary step to identify and determine how teachers articulate their perspectives as an educator during emergency remote teaching. A case study on a group of trained graduate teachers in Malaysia was conducted to investigate strategies and struggles they faced in the emergency remote teaching period through a survey and a thematic analysis of narratives they provided. Findings show that though respondents were equipped with pedagogical knowledge in integrating technology, they were unable to fully utilise what they have learned in their teacher training programme during emergency remote teaching due to lack of administrative support from school and poor infrastructure accessibility. Their narratives also suggested a pertinent need for future study to investigate the synergy between parents, schools and teachers in working cohesively to ensure learning is supported effectively at home and in school especially during emergency remote teaching.

The presence of Malaysian millennials on social media platforms is increasingly gaining attention... more The presence of Malaysian millennials on social media platforms is increasingly gaining attention particularly on Twitter. Language wise, many of them are predominantly using English and Malay in their tweets but with a touch of their own "styles" in various morphological aspects. This trend eventually leads to a rampant use of distorted vocabulary, churning out many non-standard words. This study aims to address the need in classifying the types of morphological distortions of words that are widely used among the Malaysian millennials and identify the reasons behind such trend. A total of 50 active Twitter users from Malaysia aged 18 to 30 years old were randomly chosen for this study. From each user, 20 tweets of longer than 5 words were selected for lexical analysis, giving a sum of 1000 tweets (8443 words in total). Then, interviews were conducted on 30 participants to gauge the factors of using those non-standard words. The findings revealed that the words were largely distorted in terms of its inflections so as to fit some sounds. Also, most distorted words were deliberately coined so that the millennials would appear trendy, while some were merely following the usage without knowing the actual word. This study has shown that the use of distorted words among Malaysian Twitter users did not hinder effective communication.

Many studies related to the use of virtual reality in education are focused on the cognitive aspe... more Many studies related to the use of virtual reality in education are focused on the cognitive aspects with little consideration given to the emotional domain. Thus, this study aims to identify the salient linkages between learners’ emotions and design elements of a desktop virtual reality-based learning environment by employing Kansei Engineering concepts. A courseware related to the teaching of road safety skills to young learners was designed and developed to be used as a case for the study. Ten specimens of the courseware, which highlights different design elements, were presented to 90 students from three randomly selected secondary schools. They were required to rate their feelings towards the specimens using the provided checklist that consists of 30 words related to emotions. The gathered data were then analysed using Principal Component Analysis and Partial Least Squares analysis. The results revealed that the most influential design elements in inducing positive emotions are environment richness and coaching. Ultimately, the uncovered linkages could be used to inform future design of emotionally sound desktop VR-learning environments.

Purpose of the study: This study aims to analyse which gender language features are used by both ... more Purpose of the study: This study aims to analyse which gender language features are used by both genders in computer-mediated communication (CMC) and also investigates if online gender communication reflects normal face-to-face communication. Methodology: A qualitative research design was employed in addressing the objectives of the study. A total of 260 Facebook comments were collected and analysed using more than one methodological approach in accordance with CMDA (Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis). Main Findings: The findings show that male language features occurred more frequently compared to female language features. However, commenters of both genders do not always follow their respective gender language features. This shows that commenters from both genders do not necessarily follow their own gender stereotypes according to the different contextual situations they face. Applications of this study: The findings from this study can contribute to gender language studies and also benefit those who are interested in millennial research and the usage of CMC in recent times. Novelty/Originality of this study: In this research, common framework in analysing gender differences is improved to fit the needs of current CMC trends.

Background While emergency airway management training is conventionally conducted via face-to-fac... more Background While emergency airway management training is conventionally conducted via face-to-face learning (F2FL) workshops, there are inherent cost, time, place and manpower limitations in running such workshops. Blended learning (BL) refers to the systematic integration of online and face-to-face learning aimed to facilitate complex thinking skills and flexible participation at a reduced financial, time and manpower cost. This study was conducted to evaluate its effectiveness in emergency airway management training. MethodsA single-center prospective randomised controlled trial involving 30 doctors from Sarawak General Hospital, Malaysia was conducted from September 2016 to February 2017 to compare the effectiveness of BL versus F2FL for emergency airway management training. Participants in the BL arm were given a period of 12 days to go through the online materials in a learning management system while those in the F2FL arm attended a-day of face-to-face lectures (8 h). Participants from both arms then attended a day of hands-on session consisting of simulation skills training with airway manikins. Pre- and post-tests in knowledge and practical skills were administered. E-learning experience and the perception towards BL among participants in the BL arm were also assessed. ResultsSignificant improvements in post-test scores as compared to pre-test scores were noted for participants in both BL and F2FL arms for knowledge, practical, and total scores. The degree of increment between the BL group and the F2FL arms for all categories were not significantly different (total scores: 35 marks, inter-quartile range (IQR) 15.0 – 41.0 vs. 31 marks, IQR 24.0 – 41.0, p = 0.690; theory scores: 18 marks, IQR 9 – 24 vs. 19 marks, IQR 15 – 20, p = 0.992; practical scores: 11 marks, IQR 5 -18 vs. 10 marks, IQR 9 – 20, p = 0.461 respectively). The overall perception towards BL was positive. Conclusions Blended learning is as effective as face-to-face learning for emergency airway management training of junior doctors, suggesting that blended learning may be a feasible alternative to face-to-face learning for such skill training in emergency departments. Social media marketing is gaining momentum in recent years due to its ability in reaching out to ... more Social media marketing is gaining momentum in recent years due to its ability in reaching out to the target audience in a short period of time. Many forms of social media marketing strategies have been introduced and tested and one that is widely used is Internet memes. Despite its widespread use, there is a need to know if iconicity of memes would be affected when they are used in local contexts. Iconicity refers to the match between form (images and texts) and meanings. This paper reports findings from a qualitative study that investigated the iconicity of memes used in marketing by analysing their language features in relation the feedback obtained from the target respondents namely Malaysian youths. A total of 50 respondents were involved and they were told to rate 30 memes in terms of their level of understanding and interpretation. The subsequent in-depth interviews were conducted on five respondents. The findings show that most of the memes were high in terms of iconicity and only seven of them were low. The predominant language features were also analysed and memes with low iconicity tend to use complex sentences, full of short forms and slangs as well as imperative words. The findings from this study may not be generalised but it has provided insightful outcomes for local businesses in planning their social media marketing especially those that plan to capitalise on the rising trend of Internet memes.

Due to the high percentage of web users who exhibit some traits of dyslexia, presenting a web text that follows the guidelines which are meant for normal users poses challenges to dyslexic users. Acknowledging the ubiquitous use of the web for learning and the massive availability of text on the web as well as the significant number of dyslexic learners, this investigation intends to derive appropriate guidelines for displaying web text that could accommodate both normal and dyslexic learners. This qualitative study employs a multiple case study design and data are mainly collected via observation and guided interviews. The study reveals that existing dyslexia-friendly text guidelines are also appropriate for normal learners and contrary to the popular belief that assistive technology such as screen readers are helpful in reading, reading text aloud does not always work for both dyslexic and normal learners.

Kajian ini mengenal pasti persepsi pelajar tentang penggunaan aplikasi media sosial dalam pengajaran Bahasa Inggeris yang melibatkan sejumlah 100 orang pelajar prasiswazah yang mengikuti kursus pengukuhan Bahasa Inggeris. Mereka dikehendaki untuk melibatkan diri dalam aktiviti-aktiviti berasaskan media sosial yang dijalankan dalam laman e-pembelajaran kursus tersebut selama 10 minggu. Pada penghujung minggu ke-10, borang soal selidik diberikan kepada pelajar untuk mengenal pasti persepsi mereka tentang aktiviti-aktiviti yang telah dijalankan. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan para pelajar berpendapat Wiki telah membantu penulisan mereka, manakala video YouTube banyak digunakan untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kemahiran bertutur. Selain itu, kumpulan perbincangan Facebook dianggap berguna untuk pembelajaran tatabahasa dan perkataan. Twitter pula hanya digunakan untuk menerima informasi tentang definisi perkataan. Perbincangan tentang kekuatan dan kelemahan media sosial dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggeris dan cadangan untuk meningkatkan potensi aplikasi tersebut juga disertakan.

While an increasing number of studies have focused on the effectiveness of wiki in improving students' writing skills, this study was conducted to examine the attitudinal factors that influence English as a Second Language (ESL) students' group collaboration in using wikis for a writing task that was divided into three phases: pre-writing, individual-construction, joint-constructions. Data collected from these students after completing this task was analyzed based on three attitudinal aspects: motivation, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use. The findings reveal high mean scores for all aspects. Further multiple regression analysis reveals that motivation is the most important factor associated with group collaboration, indicating the need to boost students' motivation to encourage effective collaboration in completing wiki writing tasks. Malaysian Abstract Wiki, sebagai satu alat Web 2.0 yang popular, telah memberi kesan kepada penglibatan dan pencapaian pelajar terutamanya dalam aspek pembelajaran bahasa kedua dan bahasa asing. Walaupun telah terdapat semakin banyak kajian yang memberi tumpuan kepada keberkesanan wiki dalam meningkatkan kemahiran penulisan pelajar, kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengkaji faktor sikap yang mempengaruhi kolaborasi kumpulan pelajar Bahasa Inggeris sebagai Bahasa Kedua (ESL) dalam menggunakan wiki untuk tugasan penulisan yang terdiri daripada tiga fasa: pra-tulis, pengarangan individu, pengarangan bersama. Data yang dikumpul daripada pelajar selepas tamat tugas ini dianalisis berdasarkan tiga aspek sikap: motivasi, tanggapan kebergunaan, dan tanggapan kemudahan penggunaan. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan skor min yang tinggi untuk semua aspek. Analisis regresi berganda juga menunjukkan bahawa motivasi ialah faktor yang paling penting yang berkaitan dengan kolaborasi berkumpulan. Ini menunjukkan keperluan untuk meningkatkan motivasi pelajar untuk menggalakkan kolaborasi yang berkesan dalam menyiapkan tugasan penulisan wiki.

Needless to say, it is pertinent for them to have some basic programming skills. We realized the needs to motivate the potential programmers therefore, proposed the integration of folktales in learning programming. This paper shares an approach of teaching programming using the folktales to create awareness also to simulate the amateur and non-programmers interested with folktales at the same time motivated to complete a creation of digital story using 3D programming software, Alice and Unity. Mixed-methods approach revealed participants' positive behavior towards learning programming although it was perceived difficult. The finding also indicates that they can understand the programming language and successfully explored the software to create a digital story.

Although MOOCs have provided an avenue for learners to learn at their own pace virtually, learner... more Although MOOCs have provided an avenue for learners to learn at their own pace virtually, learners’ engagement on the content created within the MOOC platform is reported to be drastically low. For example, Daniel (2012) reported an MIT Circuits and Electronics MOOC, which started with 155,000 enrolled students, had 23,000 attempting the first problem (14.8%) and only 7,157 (4.6% of registered) completing the course. This trend is apparent across a range of courses offered across the globe including emerging MOOC providers in Asia Pacific regions like Malaysia and Singapore. In fact, over dependency on pre-recorded video lectures in MOOCs is now a cause for concern, to the extent that Duke Professor Cathy Davidson has called the current implementation of MOOCs as “taking the lecture - the most traditional form of education-and motorizing it” (Bonnett, 2013, para 27). Kop (2011) echoed the same sentiment by highlighting the need for MOOCs to pay close attention to social presence (interactions) of the facilitators and of participants. In view of the need to improve learners’ engagement, this article outlines several useful suggestions in integrating face-to-face lectures with MOOC contents, which can be taken from various platforms including MOOCs produced by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak.

This study aims to explore the learning experience of learners with dyslexia when reading passages using different online reading affordances to derive some guidelines for dyslexia-friendly online text. The study employed a multiple-case qualitative approach and key themes were interpreted based on these learners' perceived learning, engagement and satisfaction. The study concludes that the use of screen reader for online reading should be optional, adequate control of screen reader should be provided and screen reader is more beneficial when online text is written in a language that the learner is not proficient. Results from this study also provide empirical support of the appropriateness of some existing web accessibility guidelines.

This qualitative study uses a multiple case study design and data are mainly collected via observations and guided interviews. The study reveals that existing dyslexia-friendly text guidelines are also appropriate for normal learners and the use of screen reader, an assistive technology that reads text aloud, does not fit every dyslexic and normal learner.

Four aspects of the students’ views namely, views on personal ability in English, learning Science in English, importance of learning Science in English and language medium preference were covered in the questionnaire items. The findings show that the majority of the students viewed their English language ability as good, had positive views about learning Science in English, very aware of the importance of learning Science in English and preferred to learn Science in English only and bilingually in the Malay language and English. The paper highlights the need to listen to the students’ voice and recommends the way forward for addressing English medium instruction issues.
