The essay begins by reconstructing the main themes of the debate on mysticism, and then offers an analysis and interpretation of the Treatise on the Vision of God that seeks to highlight the distinctiveness of Cusanus' philosophical thought.
Within the contemporary political-ethical debate, the Aristotelian ethics of virtue is frequently... more Within the contemporary political-ethical debate, the Aristotelian ethics of virtue is frequently invoked by those authors, usually classified under the heading of «communitarian», who turn to Aristotle’s doctrine to combat liberalism, whose theoretical roots are identified with the individualistic anthropology typical of modem political philosophy. Faced with this interpretation, the article seeks to show that there are aspects of Aristotle’s view which ensure a profound and persistent continuity with the tradition of modem individualism. To this end, the article sets out from the discussion of the political project of Plato’s Republic developed by Aristotle in the second book of the Politics. Starting out with a study of Aristotle’s criticisms, the article first examines the Aristotelian view of the nature of the political good and then the Aristotelian idea of citizenship. By means of this analysis, the article aims to show that the heart of Aristotle’s confrontation with Plato lies in the proposal of a pattern of subjectivity, which considers «one’s own» as the primary core of the identity and autonomy of the individual and as the main source of human action. The article also aims to illustrate the connection between this ethical and political «grammar» of subjectivity and another «grammar», equally decisive for the Western tradition : the ontological grammar of the substance.La conception d’Aristote est souvent évoquée au sein du débat éthico-politique contemporain spécialement par les auteurs — souvent classés sous la dénomination de «communautaristes» — qui récupèrent l’éthique aristotélicienne des vertus en polémique envers le libéralisme et ses racines théoriques, reconnues dans l’anthropologie individualiste typique de la philosophie politique moderne. Vis-à-vis de cette interprétation, l’article vise à montrer les aspects de la conception d’Aristote qui marquent une continuité profonde et persistante avec la tradition de l’individualisme moderne. Pour ce faire, le point de départ de l’article sera la discussion que, dans le Livre II de la Politique, Aristote mène avec le projet politique élaboré par Platon dans la République. Après avoir analysé les critiques d’Aristote, l’article examinera d’abord la conception aristotélicienne de la nature du bien politique et tout de suite l’idée aristotélicienne de citoyenneté. Par cette analyse, l’article vise à montrer que le point central de la confrontation critique qu’Aristote mène vis-à-vis de Platon réside dans la proposition d’une figure de subjectivité qui fait du «propre» le noyau primaire de l’identité et de l’autonomie de l’individu ainsi que la source principale de l’action humaine. In the history of the scholarship on Nicholas of Cusa 1964 was a remarkable year. The fifth cente... more In the history of the scholarship on Nicholas of Cusa 1964 was a remarkable year. The fifth centenary of Cusanus’s death was celebrated and two famous Conferences were held in Bernkastel-Kues and Brixen/Bressanone, Nicholas's German birthplace and episcopal see in South Tyrol, respectively. In the summer of the same year, the theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar published a long article in the cultural supplement of the Swiss newspaper “Basler Volksblatt” entitled: “Warum wir Cusanus brauchen”. Almost sixty years after Balthasar’s article, in this book philosophers, theologians and scholars from different European countries return to debate on the topicality of Cusanus’s thought and its relevance for contemporary culture.
The contributors to this volume address the question raised by Balthasar in 1964 (“Why we need Cusanus”) from various perspectives and from different approaches. In this way, the studies collected here offer the reader a picture of the multiple legacies of Cusanus’s philosophy and, at the same time, enable him to have a look at the new directions of research on Nicholas of Cusa and its developments in the last few decades.
