It attempts to provide in words a picture of Cuba at the time of the 60th anniversary of the revolution (mid 2013). The text runs parallel to a photographic essay on Cuba, consisting of over forty images produced by the co-author. The author of the text is an anthropologist, with no claim to being a Caribbean specialist. The aim is both to explore the complementarity of words and images, and to produce a mental image through text that is palatable to non-specialists. This joint venture was based on a three-week visit to Cuba, covering around 2.000 km of the Western portion of the country in July 2013. The result evokes a journalistic approach; nevertheless, the author of the text found it impossible to shed herself of contemporary anthropological concerns.

Before focusing on the Mẽbêngôkre kinship terminology, this article looks at what anthropologists understand by kinship and the main disagreements that have emerged over the course of a century of reflection on this theme. The last two decades have witnessed an approximation between kinship and gender. The possibility is suggested of the mapping out of kinship categories having arisen in the attempt to interpret and attribute meaning to human sexual dimorphism (permeated by age differences). This discussion is followed by the presentation of some aspects of the Mẽbêngôkre kinship terminology, such as the implications of being classified as Omaha. It is shown how the terminology is interwoven with the onomastic system, besides the importance of birth order. Metaphors lead us into slippery terrain and the universality of categories such as "father‟ prove to be problematic. The paper ends showing that Mẽbêngôkre lovers are conceived as attenuated forms of husband or wife, rather than as a category differentiated from the spouse, as is the case in Portuguese.

Mebengokre women as they have been portrayed in the
anthropological literature and in the mass media - as
powerless or as mighty forces. In the last decade or so,
feminists have abandoned the simplistic notion of the
universal domination of women, replacing this with a more
sophisticated perspective stemming from the realization that
both women and the context of their daily lives are multifaceted. The notion of agency is a useful instrument for
reconsidering the position occupied by women in society. An
attempt is made to analyse the social construction of female
gender in Mebengokre society. The validity of the classical
anthropological Jê/Bororo dichotomy between a public, ceremonial and political sphere monopolized by men and a
peripheral, private, domestic female sphere is called into
question. Mebengokre society is a house-based society, in a
Lévi-Straussian sense. People belong to their mother's House and all heritable prerogatives and wealth belong to Houses, each occupying a fixed portion of the village circle. In sum, Houses, entailing a uterine ideology have previously been overlooked by anthropologists. Taken as the major feature of social organization, they alter our view of Mebengokre women

Brazilian legislation concerning the use of images of Indigenous peoples is both ambiguous and problematic. The potential for the use of photography for pedagogic purposes is hampered by the lack of incentives and the poor conservation of existing materials. Snap shots of today metamorphose almost instantly into historical documentation and provide a dimension that cannot be replicated or substituted by the written word.

Some anthropologists noted the existence of such terms, but considered them to be circumlocutions of affinity. The range of terms found shows that they are not limited to terms concerning affines. I tried to reduce them to a sort of equation, such as: ‘my son = your classificatory son’. After being unable to advance this discussion for over twenty years, I came across analogous terms in Australia, where they were analyzed by F. Merlan and several other authors. These terms constitute a series that is distinct from the basic reference and vocative terms. They manifest a sophisticated logic, filling in a semantic vacuum that is lacking in languages like English or Portuguese. They incorporate notions of geometry (or ethno-mathematics), demonstrating, in the Mebengôkre case, the complexity of a society that little over half a century ago was labeled as ‘marginal’ to the tropical forest.

It is argued that personal names are linked to Houses (as distinct from dwellings) which entail an ideology of uterine descent. Names, along with heritable prerogatives, constitute the patrimony of immaterial wealth which defines the distinctive identity of each House. This reappraisal of Mebengokre society revives the question of descent in Lowland South America. An ethnographic account is given of the social and semantic significance of personal names and of the great naming ceremonies with which they are associated. Names and prerogatives are the basic components of the Mebengokre personae which link the living to their mythological ancestors. The physical organism is ephemeral but names and other forms of wealth are recovered by society at an individual's death in order to reproduce itself in its own image.

At the time of this writing, sixty-seven people in Brazil who have acted in defense of the rights of indigenous peoples and Maroon descendants (Quilombolas) face bogus criminal charges. Frequently anthropologists are denigrated and accused of using the knowledge acquired during their research for personal enrichment and academic promotion. While the Code of Ethics (Resolution No. 510) of April 7, 2016 passed by the Brazilian Conselho Nacional de Saúde (National Health Council) that now guides conduct in the field purports to recognize the specificity of the social and human sciences, in reality it is an intromission of biomedicine and bioethics into anthropology, sociology, and related sciences. The bureaucratization involved, if followed to the letter, would discourage people from undertaking research. Field researchers must already avoid thorny issues such as polygamy, abortion, and the use and traffic of illegal drugs. Meanwhile, evangelical churches are undeterred in their zeal to convert Amerindians. They interfere in their way of life, often with devastating effects, and, acting in league with the bloc of large agribusiness interests (ruralistas), have become a force with which to be reckoned. The witch hunt against anthropologists has increased since the ousting of President Dilma Rousseff in May 2016, and the demarcation of Indigenous Lands (Terras Indígenas or TI) has ground to a halt. While miners and loggers invade existing Indigenous Lands with impunity, the 2016 Code of Ethics is a straitjacket that fails to come to grips with various legitimate ethical issues that concern anthropologists. In the present article, I draw on my several decades of research and university teaching in Brazil to explore the contradictions at the heart of anthropological work with indigenous peoples.

Various concrete situations are examined to exemplify the ways in which, at best, they are denied a voice unless their leaders adapt their discourse to concerns that resonate with those of their non-Indigenous interlocutors. Native ontologies relating to reciprocity and the use of natural resources for subsistence, without concern for creating a marketable surplus, are systematically subordinated to the vested interests of corporate capital, exemplified by the construction of hydroelectric dams and mining activities. The state stands by as Indigenous lands are subjected to arson attacks, and the judiciary fails to take action against the encroachment of Indigenous lands. The situation in Southern Mato Grosso borders on outright genocide. The economic and political crisis has worsened the situation, with dwindling resources for monitoring deforestation and for providing adequate health and educational services. The crisis in the industrial sector has favored advocates of the merits of large-scale monoculture of crops like soya for export on the commodity market. The wisdom of adaptation to the environment by the Indigenous peoples is ignored and their shrinking land base, coupled with their growing population, serves to make them increasingly dependent of governmental welfare benefits. This is then interpreted as evidence of the inevitability of capitalist globalization with disparagement of anything other than capital-intensive monoculture. The gap is constantly widening between the Indigenous peoples and the economic elite whose interests the state unabashedly represents. We don't use the word "environment." We just say that we want to protect the whole forest. Environment is the word of other people; it's a word of the Whites. What you call environment is what's left over from what you've destroyed.-Davi Yanomami quoted by Albert (2000: 259)
