The Balkans, which are not so much a geographical region as a cultural-philosophical concept, are closely related to the idea of frontiers in Europe. In the cartography of the collective unconscious of our continent, the Balkans – unlike other European peripheries – are marked by the ambiguity of exceptionalism. They lie at the confluence of tremendum and fascinosum. To this ambiguity corresponds, in the self-understanding of the culture of Romania – the largest country of South Eastern Europe – an inner ambiguity, which is most clearly illustrated by the philosophical discourse. Nevertheless: could the familiarity with frontiers, limit situations, instability and self-irony of the Balkan mentality be seen as its actual or potential contribution to a pan-European self-consciousness and as an unexpected source of (post)modernity?

This kind of pre-possession, which presupposes an aesthetics of plenitude, is on the one hand completely justified by the need of a philosophical coverage of the canonical art. However, in order to understand the whole complexity of the world of art and regard it from an interrogative and dubitative, i.e. really philosophical perspective, a phenomenological aesthetics should on the other hand go beyond the domain of what could be designated as aesthetic evidence and discover the strange realm of artistic secondarity, ambiguity and uncertainty. The result would be a phenomenology of secondary art and an aesthetics of precarity, which could be part of a hermeneutics of secondary senses and meanings and of a philosophy of the secondary as such.

The recent research, with its historicizing tendency, took more intensively into account the catholic background and the theological beginnings of the philosopher, but has surprisingly seldom discussed his early encounter with the applied hermeneutics. However, it was precisely this topic that constituted from the beginning the center of his confrontation with theological questions. The present study takes Heidegger’s hint seriously and reconstructs, with the instruments of history of concepts, ideas and science, his reception of such important local intellectual traditions as Biblical hermeneutics, Tübingen School of Catholic Theology, Historiography, and Art History, in order to emphasize their importance for the genesis of a phenomenological hermeneutics.

Heidegger sketches the positive idea of a philosophical ethos as enactment of a dialogue with the other, which goes hand in hand with the questioning of one’s identity: hermeneutics becomes, according to its original purpose, the mediation between otherness and identity. Heidegger recognizes the risk that the other can be absorbed into the metaphysical thinking and threatened in his otherness. The other is not simply regarded as the passive surface of projection of one’s own philosophy, but as a challenging interlocutor. According to Heidegger, it is only this way that the encounter with the other becomes the occasion of the destruction of metaphysical thought and the chance of a rediscovery of the self. Heidegger’s actual positive response to the questions about humanism, the essence of the action, and the need for an ethics is the draft of a dialogical hermeneutics.

A consequence of this process is the rediscovery of the young Heidegger, following a long period of considering Heidegger the author of a single book and many other attempts at revising its approach. The present article identifies first the two general tendencies of research. 1. The shift of the interest from the canonical texts to minor texts and historical documents. 2. The temporal regress, first to the Marburg courses, than to the Freiburg lectures and the Habilitationsschrift. The books discussed by the article shed light on the latest step of this process, that of the growing shift of interest towards Heidegger’s formation years: the religious background in Meßkirch and his studies of theology, philosophy, mathematics and natural sciences in Freiburg.
