This event is part of the PRIMA research project Beyond the Text. New Funerary Compositions in the Graeco-Roman Period: Textualities and Archaeology in Thebes and is sponsored by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
The Ptolemaic period (332 - 30 BC) saw the emergence of new funerary compositions with diversified contents and formats that would gradually supplant the famous Book of the Dead, particularly in the Theban area.
The goal of this international conference is to connect textual, religious, socio-economical and historical backgrounds. The conference will bring together egyptologists, papyrologists and archaeologists, involved in research related to the Theban area during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, to discuss funerary, documentary and archaeological sources and examine the socio-cultural factors and the influence of local cults, that could have contributed to the evolution of late funerary literature.
Since François Daumas devoted a few words to the mammisi of Deir el-Medina, but considered that its state of preservation was not good enough to be taken into account for the elaboration of a general typology, many authors have expressed various opinions on the question whether there is or not a mammisi in Deir el-Medina.
After providing a comprehensive summary of these views and discussing them thoroughly, the presentation will focus on the assessment of various aspects of the issue: plan of the building, architecture, dating and historical context, iconography and texts. To what extend would comparison with other mammisis be useful? What is the impact of the implementation of the facility in the global structure of the site? What criteria would allow us to recognise a mammisi or to reject such an identification, and to ascertain another function if appropriate?
The Deir el Medina case study will provide the opportunity to confront various analytic patterns and contribute to the raise of further discussions about the architecture and functions of Egyptian mammisis.
In the Ptolemaic temple of Deir el-Medina, twelve knife-holding and animal-headed guardians are keeping the entrance of the southern chapel. Most of them are represented elsewhere at different periods, sometimes with other defining features. The gathering and analysis of the documentation afferent to this set of protectors enable to retrace the various contexts in which they appear and to connect them with the decoration of the chapel, especially with the representation of the Judgment before Osiris, corresponding to the vignette of Chapter 125 of the Book of the Dead on the south wall, and the scene with the ḥnw-bark of Sokar on the north wall. Results from the study shed light on the interconnection between the iconography of the inner scenes of the chapel and the decoration of its door and provide an opportunity to follow the evolution of a specific group of divine figures through the collected depictions and texts and along the first millennium.
