In its heydays at around 200 AD the perimeter of the city counted about 100 hectares. First excavations have been carried out during the Renaissance. Nevertheless only a third of the total surface has been uncovered.
The earliest known settlement remains are dating back to the Augustan period (15BC – 10 AD). Because of the soil conditions, effective timber structures from these early buildings are rarely preserved. Nervertheless, traces of foundation beams and post structures can be found in the
archaeological record. Their alignment according to the orthogonal street grid as well as their disposition within the urban Insula system allow exciting statements regarding the development of the early caput coloniae. Furthermore clay framework walls can also be found throughout the city. Not only during the early period but also throughout the stone building phases (from the middle of the 1st century AD) they were used in a variety of ways. Rarely there is even evidence for rammed earth walls.
The paper not only gives an overview of the wood and mixed construction method in Augusta Raurica but also presents further findings that point to perishable architectural components.

this international colloquium organized by the Vindonissa-professorship of the
University Basel and Augusta Raurica.
This group of urban living and trading quarters is characterized by the surrounding
square of the commonly orthogonal street grid. The basic idea of the
colloquium is to build a platform for researchers who are or have been working
on Insulae to discuss specific questions.
Although the main focus lies on the structural unit of the insula, the perspective
shall be extended to the urban surroundings. The embedding in the respective
context of the insula enables further statements.
Based on the architectural layout of an Insula and their spatial and functional
structure raises the fundamental question ab-out the functionality of an Insula.

The Roman colonial town of Augusta Raurica (Switzerland) has an extensive street network based on an orthogonal grid. However this network is not yet fully excavated. Therefore many reconstructions and additions originate from archaeological assumptions. To evaluate the town’s transport connections more objectively we have used space syntax analysis to visualize scenarios with the aim of questioning the archaeological theses with a critical eye. In order to do this, the study concentrates on the street network during the town’s heyday around 200 AD. Besides the mentioned plausibility check of consisting road course reconstructions, space syntax allows exciting observations relative to the urbanism of the town complex. The presented paper provides an insight into the current research project that uses space syntax analysis for the first time in the research field of Augusta Raurica.
