Rabies was detected in two bats colonies of insectivorous Histiotus velatus that used as shelter ceilings of buildings in the same park in the North region of Sao Paulo City, Brazil in 2001 and 2009. This park although located in an urban area, has a large area of rainforest. Rabies diagnosis was made by FAT (Fluorescent Antibody Test) and MIT (Mouse Inoculation Test) techniques. The number of bats submitted to rabies diagnosis was forty-three in the first colony and forty in the second. Before it, bats received anesthesic and blood samples were collected by cardiac puncture in sixty animals (thirty-eight of the first colony and twenty-two of the second colony) and the presence of rabies virus neutralizing antibodies was determined by SFIMT (Simplified Fluorescent Inhibition Microtest). The rabies cases in dogs and wild canids in Northeastern Brazil are a public and animal health problem. This paper describes the identities of the coding region of the N-gene of Rabies virus (RABV) isolated in canids from Northeastern Brazil. The genetic tree generated using the sequence data described here divided the cluster BRAZILAN CANIDS into two subclusters (DOG-RELATED STRAINS and WILD CANID-RELATED STRAINS) with identities greater than those already described. The two subclusters are sub-divided into geographic groups related to the origin of the isolates, suggesting a long-standing ecological coexistence of the sequence types characteristic of the groups. This paper presents the first report of rabies in three bat species , Molossus molossus , Molossops neglectus and Myotis riparius in Sao Paulo City, Brazil. Methods: Bats were diagnosed as positive for rabies using the fluorescent antibody technique and mouse inoculation test. The isolates were characterized antigenically using a panel of eight monoclonal antibodies. The samples were also genetically analyzed by partial sequencing of the portion of nucleoprotein gene between positions 1157 and 1445nt. Results: Analysis of the results verified that the sample isolated from the species M. molossus presented antigenic variant 6, while the other two samples showed a different profile from that established in the panel, one not previously reported in the literature. The results of genetic analysis revealed that the M. molossus sample segregated with Lasiurus sp isolates, M. neglectus segregated with a subgroup of Eptesicus furinalis isolates and the Myotis riparius sample segregated with...

Soapstone is among the first heat-resistant materials to have been used by man for the manufacture of culinary utensils, but its impact on human nutrition has merited little attention. Here, we present a preliminary evaluation of the impact of soapstone pans on the iron status in humans. Five nuns (37.6 +/- 6.31 y) replaced the soapstone for their traditional aluminum cookware, without any alteration of the diet itself. Comparison of the hematological data, determined before and 10 weeks after switching the pans, revealed that hemoglobin rose from 13.26 to 14.0 mg x dL(-1) (p = 0.0048), and hematocrit increased from 38.14 to 40.71% (p = 0.0002), while the transferrin saturation index went from 28.04 to 28.96% (p = 0.0147) and ferritin, from 31.5 to 34.74 microg x gL(-1) (p = 0.0681). By simply replacing the soapstone for the traditional aluminum cookware, substantially improved the iron status in all subjects in a relatively short period of time.

Bats are the second largest group of mammals and the most versatile of them, the diversity in their diets is not found in any other kind of mammals. Brazil holds 167 species, most has insectivorous feeding habits (70%) and the other species are distributed in frugivorous, nectarivorous, hematophagous, omnivorous and piscivorous. Bats that live in urban areas are widely favored by the large supply of food and shelter present in big cities. The human buildings are often used by these species as day roost and the easy adaptation makes bats synanthropic animals. The proximity to people and also domestic animals may represent risk of rabies transmission. The Center for Zoonosis Control in Sao Paulo maintains a service to attend the population that claim having problems caused by bats and a rabies laboratory that performed diagnosis by Direct Fluorescent and Mouse Inoculation tests in all bats collected.
