Described by Milroy and Muysken (1995, p. 6) as ‘perhaps the central issue in bilingualism resear... more Described by Milroy and Muysken (1995, p. 6) as ‘perhaps the central issue in bilingualism research’ that occurs in all bi/multilingual societies to a greater or lesser extent, code switching affects everybody who is in contact with two or more languages. Throughout recent years scholars interested in CS have examined it from various perspectives including Sociolinguistics, Conversation Analysis, Psycholinguistics, etc.
The present paper deals with the Sociolinguistic background of repeated questions in bilingual conversation. Three independent studies on CS presented at the International Conference on Bilingualism 2015 in Malta provide data which shows that one of the phenomena of bilingual speech is repeating a question in a switched code. The three language constellations are Polish-English, Greek-Georgian, and German-Spanish. The aim of this analysis is to examine and compare these examples of repetition based on politeness theory and conversation analysis in order to state the possible functions of repeated questions in code-switching. The study of these examples shows that in the context of repeated questions it is possible to combine Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory (1987) with the Conversation Analytic perspective, as this interpretation of the data is connected with the notion of politeness in communication.

Ten wzrost wiąże się zarówno z powrotem rodzin polskich z emigracji zarobkowej, jak również z podjęciem pracy przez obcokrajowców w Polsce. Artykuł stanowi próbę omówienia wyzwań nauczycieli pracujących z cudzoziemcami we wrocławskich szkołach. Na podstawie ankiety przeprowadzonej w szkołach w 2018 r. autorki tekstu wyodrębniły najważniejsze wyzwania przywołane przez nauczycieli: problem porozumienia się z uczniem wskutek bariery językowej, niedoskonałość organizacji dodatkowych zajęć językowych, poświęcanie dodatkowego czasu i uwagi uczniom cudzoziemskim podczas innych lekcji, brak przygotowania merytorycznego nauczycieli, ograniczony kontakt z rodzicami uczniów, trudności związane z obiektywną oceną pracy ucznia oraz trudności komunikacyjne, emocjonalne i merytoryczne samego ucznia.

The aim of the study was to indicate the features of bilingual literature and discussthe language... more The aim of the study was to indicate the features of bilingual literature and discussthe language of narrative in texts of contemporary migrant literature. The material used for the analysis was a Memoirs’ Collection “Wyfrunęli”, which was written by Poles who migrated to the UK and Ireland after 2004. A detailed analysis points out some features in the lexical, grammatical and spelling-related aspects of the texts which suggest the bilingual natureof the linguistic data. The lexical analysis involved studying both proper and common nouns in the context of semantic fields, which, as argued by Elżbieta Sękowska (1994), can bea useful tool in an analysis of lexical innovations in bilingual speech. The analysis of grammar concentrated on issues related to accommodation and grammatical gender. The discussionof the spelling focused on the function of incomplete borrowing.

Since the 1950s one can observe the emergence of a new research field in linguistics, namely, lan... more Since the 1950s one can observe the emergence of a new research field in linguistics, namely, language contact. This resulted in the development of extended studies on various aspects of utterances which occur in the context of bi- or multilingualism. One of the phenomena related to language contact is code-switching, which has been examined thoroughly and from different perspectives throughout the last decades. In this paper, the author considers possibilities of using the MLF model in the analysis of bilingual speech. Examples selected from the language data, which had been obtained during a role-play game, illustrated the process of analysis leading to the indication of the matrix language in code switching. The study of the form of nouns allowed to draw conclusions regarding the phenomenon of mutual mapping of the language structures that build a bilingual clause, and it resulted in indicating further requirements for research.

Bilingualism of children of Polish immigrants, who grow up in a foreign country, quite often remains unbalanced. Polish language then becomes their heritage language. However, growing up abroad not only makes someone bilingual, but also bicultural. Inheriting the culture of one's parents and gaining knowledge about the culture from a limited number of sources (parents, Saturday School, stereotypes circulating in the country of residence) results in learning about it passively and selectively.
Language exercises on the website 'Na końcu języka' (At the tip of the tongue) which develop language competence of Polish heritage speakers were designed for Poles living in Germany as a result of the project Linguistic and glottodidactic aspects of Polish-German unbalanced bilingualism. An integral part of the exercises are intra-, inter- and trans-cultural content. This article aims to discuss the role of cultural content in teaching Polish as a heritage language.
