The special place George Steiner gives to music in his book "Real Presences" offers suggestions for a cross-curricular exploration of some aspects of his aesthetics in the classroom. The roots in early Romantic music aesthetics can be pointed out. And examples from the reception history of Beethoven's fifth symphony can be taken as a starting point to think about different ways of communicating about and in music.

This comparative study attempts to describe cultural features of teaching music in Sweden and Germany. The aim is to create a space for reflection on cultural patterns of thinking. The comparison is based on focused interviews with music teachers and music teacher educators. The interviews were conducted in Sweden and Germany and were stimulated by short video footages of music lessons from both countries. By analysing the data, we could reconstruct and contrast implicit beliefs on teaching music. In Sweden, lesson planning, instruction and the evaluation of teaching are strongly oriented towards the curriculum. This is accompanied by a deeply ingrained student-centered pedagogy. The German interviews conducted in the school type Gymnasium show the significance of didactical reflections about contents and aims of music lessons rooted in a notion of Allgemeinbildung (general education). Deutlich werden u. a.

Are orchestral musicians artists or crafts(wo)men? This article offers a principal discussion of the concepts of artist and crafts(wo)man, as well as the relation between these concepts, from a philosophical point of view. We discuss the concept of ‘the crafts(wo)man’ based on Richard Sennett’s discussions of this concept, in which Hannah Arendt’s thinking plays an important role. Then, we turn our attention to Aristotle’s distinction between poiesis and praxis, as well as his concept of techne, as discussed by Martin Heidegger, and Plato’s discussion of inspiration as a basic fundament for artistic performance. Next, we address Walter Benjamin’s discussion on artwork in an age of technological reproducibility, and we draw lines between characteristic aspects in Sennett’s argument and the tension between professional thinking and the philosophy of art. This article is part of the ongoing project, Discourses of Academization and the Music Profession in Higher Music Education (DAPHME)...

We are living in a time of social and cultural changes. As in other disciplines, the foundations of music education are being increasingly challenged. Thus, it is no longer possible to specify reliably the aims and contents of music education and their implementation in school by simply basing them on lasting musical traditions and changeless forms of life. It has been said that such an assessment leads us to a pluralistic—if not relativistic—view of music education. But it does not help us when we have to make a decision on "What is to be done?" How can we orientate ourselves in our actions and whereupon should we base our judgements when negotiating decisions and trying to convince others? If we are not ready to accept that the decision-making process in the field of music education is just a matter of power, we have to be content with the arguments we can offer. We need to have the courage of independent critical thinking in terms of Didaktik involving all concerned. The situation is similar to that of aesthetic arguing: there is no sure footing; our criteria for evaluation are always up for discussion.

This study investigates music-related argumentation in different music genres (rock/pop versus classical music) applying a mixed-methods design with three groups (referred to as novices, semi-experts, and experts). Participants were asked to compare two versions of a musical piece and justify their preference in individually written argumentation. Arguments were coded by applying a category system with four main categories, namely, attributes of the musical piece, subjective dimensions, context-specific background knowledge and media-related dimensions. Results of quantitative analyses showed that experts formulated longer arguments, referring to more different categories and mentioning more aspects within these categories. Further, a larger proportion of the experts’ arguments referred to context-specific background knowledge and attributes of the musical piece, whereas semi-experts’ and novices’ argumentation consisted to a larger extent of subjective dimensions. For all analyses, there were no differences concerning the two different music genres. A discriminant analysis showed that the participants’ ascribed level of expertise was correctly predicted on the basis of their argumentation in 97.3% of the cases. Therefore, the category system provides an effective instrument for representing and evaluating music-related argumentation. Our findings illustrate quantitative and qualitative differences between arguments and build a starting point for developing innovative intervention approaches for fostering music-related argumentation.

Based on theoretical considerations about music-related aesthetic argumentation and its relevance for music education, a competence model is presented which links argumentation theory to aesthetics and the philosophy of art. This model of music-related argumentative competence provides a theoretical framework describing how people justify their aesthetic judgments about music. The presented qualitative study confronts the model with empirical data investigating music-related argumentations of three groups (novices, semi-experts, and experts). Participants had to compare two versions of a musical piece and justify their preferences. The arguments brought forward were assigned to the stages of the competence model by deductive analysis. In sum, the model builds a heuristic base, which is suitable for analyzing differences in argumentation qualities; however, difficulties in the categorization of arguments point at some aspects of the model, which have to be further investigated.

Making the Familiar Strange. A Compara ve Video-Cued Interview Study of Teaching Music in Sweden and Germany
This comparative study attempts to describe cultural features of teaching music in Sweden and Germany. The aim is to create a space for re lection on cultural pat- terns of thinking. The comparison is based on focused interviews with music teach- ers and music teacher educators. The German interviews conducted in the school type mnasium show the signi icance of didactical re lections about contents and aims of music lessons rooted in a notion of llgemein ildung (gener- al education).

It is rightly complained that the prevailing educational discourses – which are concerned with learning outcomes, assessments and employability – do not satisfy the demands of aesthetic education. However, music education has to be faced with the question, which quality criteria it aims to fulfil. Not transfer effects, but aesthetic experience and the capacity for aesthetic judgment should represent the aims of music education. Therefore, an appropriate competence model of music-related argumentation is to be developed, bringing about some consequences for the education of music teachers, as well.

Argumentation plays an integral part in music as practice. Music is something people do, and listening to and talking about music is part of that practice. From a music-educational point of view, the skill in arguing convincingly in music-related issues is a competence that has to be developed. This book chapter presents a theoretical model of music-related argumentative compentence.
