From 1990 to 1996, I worked on the project “Magic from the Cairo Geniza“ and the project “Greek-Roman Religion in Palestine“ (financed by the German Research Foundation, DFG, and headed by Peter Schäfer). I then did a habilitation in Jewish Studies at the Free University of Berlin (1996). The topic of this habil. thesis is the connection between magic, law and the history of science. In 1995, at the age of 37, I was short-listed for a professorship at the university in Duisburg, and in 1996 I was first candidate on the shortlist for a chair in Comparative Religion at the University of Leipzig. Shortly thereafter I was offered a professorship at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, where I was appointed Professor for Jewish Studies. In 1998, I founded the now well-known Leopold Zunz Center at the Leucorea Foundation (Wittenberg) and have organized a large number of conferences, symposia and readings there. I took on editorship of the newsletter of the European Association for Jewish Studies (EAJS Newsletter), and have since turned that into a respected, peer-reviewed periodical (European Journal of Jewish Studies), which is financed in part by the Rothschild Foundation, published by Brill in Boston and Leiden (www.brill.nl/ejjs). In 2001, I founded a successful scientific-scholarly series with Brill (Studies in Jewish Culture and History), which has published 33 volumes to date (www.brill.nl/sjhc). Both the journal and book series are published by Brill USA in Boston.
I have been guest professor in London, Paris, Rome and Bologna, and in 2010 I was granted an honorary professorship for Comparative Religions at the University of Leipzig. In November 2010, I and the department I head at the University in Halle-Wittenberg were granted the Emil Fackenheim Prize for Tolerance and Understanding of the Jewish Community Halle.
My list of publications offers a wide vista covering many areas of Judaic Studies, Judaism and the philosophy of religion. Five monographic studies, ten edited collections and editions, more than 100 articles in German, English, Italian, Hebrew and French, in respected journals and collective volumes, are evidence of my activity over many years in the discipline.
My research activity is characterized by four fields of concentration: 1) religion of ancient Judaism (DFG project Conception of Language / Sprachauffassung and DFG project Midrash Tehillin); 2) medieval philosophy (ANR-DFG project Peshat); 3) culture and philosophy of the Renaissance and Early Modern Period (DFG project Moscato, DFG project Simeone Luzzatto, and 4) the Science of Judaism / Wissenschaft des Judentums (DFG-LIS project Leopold Zunz).edit

Socrates, Or On Human Knowledge, published in Venice in 1651, is the only work written by a Jew that contains so far the promise of a genuinely sceptical investigation into the validity of human certainties. Simone Luzzatto masterly developed this book as a pièce of theatre where Socrates, as main actor, has the task to demonstrate the limits and weaknesses of the human capacity to acquire knowledge without being guided by revelation. He achieved this goal by offering an overview of the various and contradictory gnosiological opinions disseminated since ancient times: the divergence of views, to which he addressed the most attention, prevented him from giving a fixed definition of the nature of the cognitive process. This obliged him to come to the audacious conclusion of neither affirming nor denying anything concerning human knowledge, and finally of suspending his judgement altogether. This work unfortunately had little success in Luzzatto’s lifetime, and was subsequently almost forgotten. The absence of substantial evidence from his contemporaries and that of his epistolary have thus increased the difficulty of tracing not only its legacy in the history of philosophical though, but also of understanding the circumstances surrounding the writing of his Socrates. The present edition will be a preliminary study aiming to shed some light on the philosophical and historical value of this work’s translation, indeed it will provide a broader readership with the opportunity to access this immensely complicated work and also to grasp some aspects of the composite intellectual framework and admirable modernity of Venetian Jewish culture in the ghetto.

The present study addresses problems of an epistemological nature which hinge on the question of how to define Jewish thought. It will take its start in an ancient question, that of the relationship between Jewish culture, Greek philosophy, and then Greco-Roman (and Christian) thought in connection with the query into the history and genealogy of wisdom and knowledge.
Our journey into the history of the denomination ‘Jewish philosophy’ will include a leg that will lead us to certain declarations of political, moral, and scientific principles, and then on to the birth of what is called philosophia perennis or, in Christian circles, prisca theologia. Our subject of inquiry will thus be the birth of the concept of Jewish philosophy, Jewish theology and Jewish philosophy of religion.
A special emphasis will fall on the topic treated in the last part of this study: Jewish scepticism, a theme that involves a philosophical attitude founded on dialectical "enquiry", as the etymology of the Greek word skepsis properly means

Scepticism is a concept and a practice of numerous facets.¹ In its historical development the two branches of Academic and Pyrrhonian philosophy are still highly relevant to the enquiry of the reliability of secular and sacred knowledge.² Scepticism as a general term denotes putting every belief and all knowledge into question. Since the Early Modern period, it has also been used to designate atheism, agnos-ticism and criticism. In the context of following contribution, scepticism is used in its general meaning as enquiry into (secular and sacred) belief and knowledge, the expression of doubts about any kind of authority – comprising the question of the criterion of truth³ and including implicit and explicit sceptical paradoxes – and the purposefully evoked suspension of judgement to avoid dogmatism.⁴

German Reform Judaism, has its intellectual roots in the Lutheran
Reformation. This fact is well known. How close this affinity was can
be shown through a perusal of the stereotypical terminology used, such
as “Reform,” “Reformation,” and even “Renaissance.”1 Moreover, it becomes
even more apparent through examining the leading figures of the
nineteenth century and their willing acceptance of a stereotypical pattern
of direct confrontation. They invoked similarities between two “religions,”
namely Reform Judaism and “Reformed” Christianity. I believe
that there is no figure of the nineteenth century who better embodies
the contradictory attitude to Protestantism than Leopold Zunz. In the
letters Zunz sent to and received from his teacher and friend Samuel
Meyer Ehrenberg, the adoption of Protestant topoi appears to have gone
far beyond the conventional liturgical borrowing of vernacular language
or artistic improvements of the synagogue architecture.

My specific interest here will focus on this discussion as reflected in (Jewish) Hellenistic and rabbinicl iterature and on the intriguing,b ut nevertheless dogmatic, view of the untranslatability of the divine language(lešon ha-qodeš) per se. We will begin with the analysis of an important source, the Greek prologuetothe Wisdom of Sirach, alsok nown as BenS ira.³ The Greek translator of the original He-brew of the book of Shimʻon, son of Yeshuaʻ,son of Elʻazar ben Sira, called Sofia Seir-ach in the Greek and Ecclesiasticus in the Latin tradition, begins his work by intro-ducinghis grandfather's(or ancestor's) wisdom text and explaining the difficulty of translating it.Idealt with this topic in another publication from 2006.⁴ In the following ,Iwill take into consideration the criticism of my contribution and respond to it. Judah ben Joseph Moscato (c.1533-1590) was one of the most distinguished rabbis, authors, and preachers of the Italian-Jewish Renaissance. His collection of sermons, Sefer Nefuṣot Yehudah, belongs to the very centre of his important homiletic and philosophical oeuvre. Composed in Mantua and published in Venice in 1589, the collection of 52 sermons addresses the subject of the Jewish festivals, focusing on philosophy, mysticism, sciences, and rites. This volume concludes the translation of the sermons and includes monographic studies about Moscato’s library, philosophical significance with an added Appendix containing his poetical compositions

Rabbinic hermeneutics in ancient Judaism reflects this multifaceted world of the text and of reality, seen as a world of reference worth commentary. As a mirror, it includes this world but perhaps also falsifies reality, adapting it to one's own aims and necessities. It consists of four parts:
Part I, considered as introduction, is the description of the "Rabbinic Workshop" (Officina Rabbinica), the rabbinic world where the student plays a role and a reformation of a reformation always takes place, the world where the mirror was created and manufactured.
Part II deals with the historical environment, the world of reference of rabbinic Judaism in Palestine and in the Hellenistic Diaspora (Reflecting Roman Religion);
Part III focuses on magic and the sciences, as ancient (political and empirical) activities of influence in the double meaning of receiving and adopting something and of attempt to produce an effect on persons and objects (Performing the Craft of Sciences and Magic).
Part IV addresses the rabbinic concern with texts (Reflecting on Languages and Texts) as the main area of "influence" of the rabbinic academy in a space between the texts of the past and the real world of the present.

Based on several years of research on Jewish intellectual life in the Renaissance, this book tries to distinguish the coordinates of “modernity” as premises of Jewish philosophy, and vice versa. In the first part, it is concerned with the foundations of Jewish philosophy, its nature as philosophical science and as wisdom. The second part is devoted to certain elements and challenges of the humanist and Renaissance period as reflected in Judaism: historical consciousness and the sciences, utopian tradition, the legal status of the Jews in Christian political tradition and in Jewish political thought, aesthetic concepts of the body and conversion.

The beginnings of the study of the Hebrew language in Wittenberg go back to the very first years of the university’s establishment and are associated with the initiatives of several scholars dealing with humanistic studies at the time. Through developing the study in three ancient languages, in keeping with the ideal of a complete humanistic erudition, Wittenberg perceived an opportunity to carve a niche of excellence for itself vis-à-vis the older universities. By introducing instruction in Hebrew along with Greek and Latin, the newly founded Leucorea sought to distinguish itself as a model for all other universities in Germany. The article traces the important steps of the history of the study of Hebrew language in Wittenberg among and outside of the theological faculty mentioning the curricula of its most famous teachers and professors.

Puoi dirmi qualcosa dell'ultimo tuo libro?
Stai preparando qualche altro lavoro?

Puoi dirmi qualcosa dell'ultimo tuo libro?
Stai preparando qualche altro lavoro?

Analytical philosophy is enormously popular among Western scholars of philosophy, primarily in the Anglosphere, although it is also enjoying more and more popularity in Europe. Scholars of history of philosophy have often accused their analytical colleagues of disregarding historical and philological methods, reducing philosophy to a playground of logical deduction, induction, and the falsification of statements.2 It is not my intention either to contribute to this discussion or to use stereotypes in order to add new material to an old and singular debate. My intention is only to analyse a perhaps unphilosophical, but nevertheless critical text from the nineteenth century that discusses philosophy as an axiomatic system which is, regrettably, infertile.
