She has a Ph.D. in the History of Architecture and Urbanism from Cornell University, a Masters in Historic Preservation from Columbia University, and a Bachelors in History from the University of Tennessee. Her research focuses on the history of modern European cities and specifically engages the relationships between architecture, cities, heritage, memory, identity, and politics. She is currently completing a manuscript for a book titled _Urban and National Identities and the Rebuilding of Mostar_ (Routledge, 2019) as well as the edited volume _Planning Eastern European Capital Cities, 1945-1990_ (Routledge, 2019).Makaš’s most recent publications include the edited volume _Capital Cities in the Aftermath of Empires: Planning in Central and Southeastern Europe_ (Routledge, 2010, co-edited with T.D. Introductory chapters outline the political history of the area, how the developments in the different countries were interconnected and how the capital cities of each independent country or growing national movement were linked to these developments.
