Plusieurs questions fondamentales d’ecclésiologie sont traitées dans la dissertation doctorale de Christophe D’Aloisio. Quelle est la base de l’édifice ecclésial ? Quels en sont les éléments constitutifs ? Quelle logique organique y est à l’œuvre ? Qu’est-ce qui la fait vivre et y assure la communion ? C’est dans le cadre et dans la suite de l’ecclésiologie orthodoxe exposée et développée par Nicolas Afanassieff (1893-1966) que cette étude se situe. Cet auteur, l’un des grands représentants de l’« École théologique orthodoxe de Paris », a renouvelé l’appréhension, en son temps principalement juridique, de l’Église. Pour Afanassieff, l’Église, fondée sur le mystère conjoint de la Croix et de la Résurrection, constitue la manifestation sacramentelle de la présence du Christ, et dès lors de l’éternité, dans l’histoire. L’assemblée des chrétiens, unie dans et par l’eucharistie, constitue une « icône de l’Église ». Corps du Christ, corps ecclésial et corps eucharistique s’appellent respectivement et ne peuvent s’entendre indépendamment les uns des autres : c’est ce qui fonde, théologiquement, l’ecclésiologie eucharistique, qu’Afanassieff a développée. La dissertation en étudie la genèse, de manière systématique et critique, en propose une réévaluation et en évoque les prolongements et la pertinence pour les problématiques ecclésiales actuelles. C’est par l’étude attentive de la théologie des ministères que sont explorés et examinés ici les fondements et les dispositions organiques de l’Église. En effet, les ministres ecclésiaux assument les charges des diverses fonctions structurelles du corps ecclésial : leur étude, au sein de leur ordre, autant que dans la sphère de responsabilité ecclésiale des laïcs, révèle ainsi, de manière dynamique, la communion de l’Église, et en relève. Envisagés dans l’Église locale d’abord, les ministères s’étendent, et s’entendent au service de la communion des Églises, tant au niveau régional qu’universel, comme ce fut le cas, au-delà des diversités hiérarchiques et territoriales, dans l’Église des premiers siècles. Une fois religion d’État de l’empire romain, une certaine uniformité s’est installée dans l’organisation de l’Église, mais des apports extrinsèques ont également pénétré l’organisme ecclésial. Depuis lors, le corps de l’Église a connu des évolutions, pour certaines compatibles, pour d’autres incompatibles avec la constitution ecclésiale d’origine. Ce n’est qu’au XXe siècle, du moins dans l’Église orthodoxe, que s’est ouverte la possibilité pour l’Église de se concevoir autrement que dans l’assujettissement à des autorités d’État. En rappelant les principes ecclésiologiques établis par N. Afanassieff, la présente dissertation entend également fournir des points d’appui à la réflexion actuelle sur cette question primordiale.
Several fundamental ecclesiological questions are dealt with in Christophe D’Aloisio’s doctoral dissertation. What are the foundations that the Church is built on? What are its constitutive elements? What is its organic logic? What gives it life and ensures its communion? The framework and inspiration for this study is the Orthodox ecclesiology set out and developed by Nicholas Afanasiev (1893-1966). One of the most prominent representatives of the Parisian school of Orthodox theology, this thinker introduced a new way of looking at the Church at a time when it tended to be conceptualised in narrowly juridical terms. For him, the Church is founded on the joint mystery of the Cross and the Resurrection and constitutes the sacramental manifestation of Christ’s presence and thereby the manifestation of eternity in history. United in and by the Eucharist, Christians together constitute an ‘icon of the Church’. The body of Christ, the body of the Church and of the Eucharistic body are interlinked and cannot be understood in isolation: such is the theological foundation of the Eucharistic ecclesiology that Afanasiev developed. This dissertation offers a systematic and critical study of its genesis, a reassessment of its importance, and a discussion of its development and its relevance to contemporary ecclesial debates. The foundations and organic provisions of the Church are explored and examined here through a careful study of the theology of ministries. Church ministers have responsibility for the various structural functions of the ecclesial body, and studying them both within their proper order and in the field of lay ecclesial responsibility sheds light on the dynamic nature of the communion of the Churches. While they are based at the level of the local Church, these ministries extend out (as servants of the communion of Churches) onto regional and universal levels, just as they did – irrespective of hierarchical and territorial diversity – in the Church of the first centuries. A certain uniformity settled on the organisation of the Church after Christianity became a State religion of the Roman Empire, and there were other outside influences on the ecclesial body. Some have seen the evolution of the Church since then as compatible with its original conception; some have not. But it has not been until the 20th century, at least in the Orthodox Church, that it has become possible for the Church to imagine itself other than subject to State authority. Via a discussion of the ecclesiological principles established by N. Afanasiev, this present dissertation aims also to provide material for contemporary reflection on this vital issue.
