Different kinds of technologies are now adopted to treat the industrial and agricultural wastewaters by chemical, physical and biological means. Research on microalgae as a probable solution for the wastewater treatment has gained importance in the recent years since; the microalgae have the potential to utilize inexpensive substrates in the wastewater for their growth and sustenance. Moreover, the ability of microalgae to treat wastewater and produce biofuels makes it an economically viable and environmental friendly feedstock. The present review deals with the treatment of wastewaters using micro algal cultivation systems such as open and closed systems and the relative effectiveness of the various strategies of harvesting micro algal like filtration, sedimentation and centrifugation are addressed.
