The term “Halal Laws” in this paper relate to the laws of consumer protection in terms of Halal product. Halal laws are crucial, since it regulates an industry that is worth an estimated of USD 2.3 trillion, annually. The Halal laws in Malaysia are a national, legislated law. Meanwhile, the United States of America (USA) also have Halal laws, but it is legislated on a state level. Not all states recognise the Halal laws in the USA. Alternatively, the Netherlands do not have Halal laws or Halal related laws. Therefore, local Muslims depend on the integrity of local Halal certifier for Halal foods. This paper summarises the Halal laws differences in these 3 countries including Halal laws offenses and penalties. This paper also summarises the challenges of implementing the Halal laws in these three countries.

Comic is one of the tool that promotes inquisitives skill from it readers. It is made with purposes of conveying, describing and even elaborating stories, moral values and even academic subjects. Japan and America had long been utilizing comic into their education. However, in order to produce an academic comic, the academician must collaborate with a cartoonist. The academician must be the writer and plan the objective of the comic and at the same time communicating with the cartoonist. This paper intend to display the three strategies for effective communication between the academician and cartoonist. The three strategies are sequential, descriptive and mix storyboard outline.

Food Science is a science field that deals with every aspect of food. The scope of the field extends from sensory evaluation to food safety and processing. Food science has gained prominence due to technology enabling the processing of food from various origin. This may be beneficial to resource-scarce communities but may bring catastrophic result to communities bound to religion and cultural customs. Therefore, a certain level of food science literacy is required for all level of people in this modern age. One method of developing scientific literacy is via graphic novel literature. Graphical storytelling enables readers to understood and elaborate the message being conveyed. The message in this context includes the technical aspect of food science. One graphic novel that contain “food” theme was selected; Oishinbo A La Carte by Tetsu Kariya and Akira Hanasaki. This manga is about the trials and tribulation of gourmet journalists in the Japanese gourmet industry. Content analysis will be applied to ascertain the extent of food science knowledge contained in the graphic novel. The findings from this paper will provide additional evidence and reinforce the need for the utilization of graphical storytelling in delivering food science knowledge to the community.

Malaysia is a multicultural country that comprises of three major ethnic groups (Malay, Chinese and Indian) in which each had dietary laws based on their customs and religions.  With the advent of technology, meat which is fundamental to most dietary laws had been commoditized in the market.  Laws such as Food Act (1985) and Trade Description Act (2011) had been enacted to regulate meat quality in the market but food dishonesty cases still occur.  This research aims to investigate the labelling of 18 processed meat products using two methods i.e. species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and a meat species rapid detection kit: Olipro® Meat ID gene chip.  From the samples, only one meat product conformed to the labelling.  All the other meat samples contained foreign meat species that were not stated in the product label when tested with both methods.  PCR method was more reliable when it comes to detection of animal species, but Olipro® Meat ID gene chip had advantages over rapidity and cost.

Komik adalah salah satu alat pencetus sifat inkuiri di dalam kalangan pembaca. Ianya dihasilkan daripada ilham untuk menyampaikan objektif kepada pembaca. Objektif tersebut termasuk idea, cerita, maklumat atau kesemuanya. Di negara luar seperti Korea dan Jepun, komik telah diaplikasikan sebagai suatu medium penyampaian bahan ilmiah pada pembaca. Penghasilan komik sebegini adalah hasil kerjasama pelukis komik dan ahli akademik disana. Malaysia juga mempunyai kapabiliti sebegini tetapi masih belum dapat diaplikasikan. Hal ini kerana, terdapat kekurangan dari segi hubungan di antara komuniti pelukis komik dan ahli akademik di Malaysia. Walaupun begitu, kekurangan tersebut dapat diatasi dan kerjasama boleh dijalankan selagi terdapat persefahaman yang mutual di antara pelukis komik dan ahli akademik.
