Anatomical studies are required to understand their structure that produces, and stores, the metabolites released by plants. The present study was conducted to determine the type and position of floral glands in three Hoya species: Hoya cagayanensis C.M Burton, Hoya lacunosa Blume, and Hoya coriacea Blume. The investigations were carried out using light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and histochemical staining tests. Secondary nectaries were present in the corona lobe portion, while simple trichomes (unicellular) were found in the petals’ adaxial epidermis of all the studied species. Conical trichomes were found in H. cagayanensis, cylindrical trichomes in H. lacunosa, and falcate trichomes in H. coriacea. Bacterial leaf streak (BLS) caused by bacterium Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola (Xoc) is one of ... more Bacterial leaf streak (BLS) caused by bacterium Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola (Xoc) is one of the most prominent rice diseases. BLS causes a significant reduction in paddy yields. However, there are limited studies and a lack of information regarding the mechanisms and cells affected on leaf tissues severed from this disease. Therefore, in this study, sensitive paddy variety IR24 was inoculated against BLS, and the pathogen colonised mesophyll cells and some bundle sheath cells. The infection spreads rapidly towards the base and apex of the leaf, but rather slowly to the left and right sides of the leaf veins. Another experiment was performed to unravel anatomical characteristics in sensitive paddy varieties (TN1, IR24, IR5) and resistant paddy varieties (IR26, Dular, IR36) against BLS. Bakh. f. decoction as anti-cancer agent has gained a lot of attention in Malaysia as an alternative medicine to the modern treatment [1]. This plant has been distributed and formulated as tea throughout Malaysia by traditional practitioners. It has gained a huge popularity among Malaysians, not only the cancer patient’s but researchers in Malaysia to discover the real potential of this plant. Christia vespertilionis is an ornamental plant Fabaceae and it is known as red butterfly wing, island peak, mariposa (butterfly in Spanish) or rerama which means butterfly in Malaysia (fig. 1). This plant is widespread in tropical Southeast Asia and it is assumed to be native to Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Myanmar and Malaysia. In traditional medicine, this plant is believed to treat snake bites, tuberculosis, heal bone fractures, increase blood circulation, bronchitis and cold [2, 3].

In doing so, more information on the species of Sterculiaceae s.s family can be added. Dried pollen samples of seven Byttneria species were selected in this study, namely B. scabrida Ridl., B. pilosa Roxb., B. elliptica Pohl, B. curtisii Oliv., B. reinwardtii Korth., B. maingayi Mast. and B. jackiana Wall. Methods involved were acetolysis techniques, single-grain technique, and observation under light microscope and scanning electron microscope. Despite its prominence, the key pathogenicity determinants for the aggressive nature of hemibiotrophic infection remain unknown. In this study, genome sequencing and the annotation of G. boninense T10 were carried out using the Illumina sequencing platform, and comparative genome analysis was performed with previously reported G. boninense strains (NJ3 and G3). The pan-secretome of G. boninense was constructed and comprised 937 core orthogroups, 243 accessory orthogroups, and 84 strain-specific orthogroups. In total, 320 core orthogroups were enriched with candidate effector proteins (CEPs) that could be classified as carbohydrate-active enzymes, hydrolases, and non-catalytic proteins. Therefore, this study aims to elucidate the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites using phytochemical and transcriptomic approaches to understand the mechanisms of scents biosynthesis, especially terpenoid in Hoya. Three Hoya flower species were selected in this study: Hoya cagayanensis, Hoya lacunosa, and Hoya coriacea. The secondary metabolite profiles characterizing scents on flowers were performed using head space solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed 23 compounds from H. cagayanensis, 14 from H. lacunose, and 36 from H. coriacea. Volatiles from the three species had different fragrance profiles, with β-ocimene and methyl salicylate compounds dominating the odor in H. cagayanensis. A few studies on bacterial species capable of suppressing E. mallotivora have been reported, but the availability of antagonistic fungi remains unknown. In this study, mycelial suspensions from five rhizospheric Trichoderma isolates of Malaysian origin were found to exhibit notable antagonisms against E. mallotivora during co-cultivation. We further characterised three isolates, Trichoderma koningiopsis UKM-M-UW RA5, UKM-M-UW RA6, and UKM-M-UW RA3a, that showed significant growth inhibition zones on plate-based inhibition assays. Abstract: Erwinia mallotivora was isolated from papaya infected with dieback disease showing the ... more Abstract: Erwinia mallotivora was isolated from papaya infected with dieback disease showing the typical symptoms of greasy, water-soaked lesions and spots on leaves. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain belonged to the genus Erwinia and was united in a monophyletic group with E. mallotivora DSM 4565 (AJ233414). Earlier studies had indicated that the causal agent for this disease was E. papayae. However, our current studies, through Koch’s postulate, have confirmed that papaya dieback disease is caused by E. mallotivora. To our knowledge, this is the first new discovery of E. mallotivora as a causal agent of papaya dieback disease in Peninsular Malaysia. Previous reports have suggested that E. mallotivora causes leaf spot in Mallotus japonicus. However, this research confirms it also to be pathogenic to Carica papaya.

The homogenous nature of the morphology has created confusion in the Malaysian Marine fish species Epinephelus fuscoguttatus and Epinephelus hexagonatus. In this study, the partial DNA sequence of the 16S gene and mitochondrial nucleotide sequences of two gene regions, Cytochrome Oxidase Subunit I and III were used to investigate the phylogenetic relationship between them. In the phylogenetic trees, E. fuscoguttatus was monophyletic with E. hexagonatus species and morphology examination shows that no significant differences were found in the morphometric features between these two taxa. This suggests that E. fuscoguttatus is not distinguishable from E. hexagonatus species, and that E. fuscoguttatus have been identified to be E. hexagonatus species is likely attributed to differences in environment and a...
