Surface sediments samples from 30 stations at the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia were collected using the Smith McIntyre grab on June 2008 in order to determine the contents of selected trace metals using the Inductive Coupled Plasma- Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The concentrations of Al, Fe, Co and Mn ranged from 0.96 %-5.74 %, 6.20-8.95 %, 83-155 µg g-1and 404-1350 µg g-1respectively. The variation was then studied by ANOVA, which showed a significant difference for the concentrations of all elements at all sampling stations. The correlation between elements was significant (p>0.05) at all stations. Whereas, the geoaccumulation index proved that the surface sediment taken at all stations were unpolluted with Al and Mn (Class 1), moderately polluted with Fe (Class 2) and strongly polluted with Co (Class 4).

The studies on natural radionuclides such as 210Po and 210Pb with the concentration of phosphorus in water column were carried out in Mersing River, Johor. There were 16 water samples were collected from nine stations during Mersing Expedition 2010 on the 4th July 2010. The samples were treated by using sequential extraction and counted using the gross alpha-beta counting system (Tennelec model 5 XLB low background gas-flowing anti-coincidence alpha-beta counter) for 210Pb and alpha spectrometry counting system (Canberra model Alpha Analyst Spectroscopy system with a silicon-surface barrier detector) for 210Po. The 210Po and 210Pb activities were varied between 0.755 to 2.238 mBq/L and 0.1555-1.598 mBq/L. While the phosphorus concentrations include TDP, SRP and DOP were in the range of 6.058 to 23.312 μg/L, 2.237 to 13.419 μg/L and 0.466 to 16.097 μg/L. Theoretical Calculation of Electrical and Optical Properties of BaZrO3


      In this project  electrical and  optical    properties of  BaZrO3  have been
accomplished    through    the  full-potential  linear  augmented  plane    wave
(FP-LAPW) by applying Wein2k software. In this study band structure, density
of state, gap energy,refractive index and optical conduction have been studied.
The results of calculations show that BaZrO3 is an insulator with an indirect
gap in which 3.2 ev and studied refractive index equal 2.07. These results are in
accordance with the ones obtained in experimental researches.

  Background and Objectives: Biofilm formed by Proteus mirabilis strains is one of the most important medical prob- lems especially in the case of device-related urinary tract infections. This study was conducted to evaluate the bacte- riocin produced by a marine isolate of Bacillus sp. Sh10, for it's in vitro inhibitory activity against pre-formed biofilm and in interference with the biofilm-forming of two biofilm-producing bacteria (P. mirabilis UCa4 and P. mirabilis UCe1). Materials and Methods: Sensitivity of two biofilm-producing bacteria (P. mirabilis UCa4 and P. mirabilis UCe1) to bac- teriocin, was investigated in planktonic and biofilm states by cell viability and crystal violet assay, respectively. Background & Objectives Actinomycetes are commonly known as exceptionally prolific source of secondary metabolites with diverse biological activities. The aim of this study was to identify some Actinomycete isolates from Malaysia marine environment and evaluate for type-I polyketide synthase (PKS-I) and nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) genes as well as antimicrobial activity. Materials and Methods: Selected isolates were identified based on their morphology and molecular properties. PKS-I and NRPS genes were detected using specific primers and the potential of their antimicrobial activity was investigated by disc diffusion method. Results: The isolates varied morphologically on the basis of colony morphology, spore chain shape, aerial and substrate mycelium formation. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequences analysis, isolates Sdstm3k, Sdtm108 and Sdts4 were highly similar to Streptomyces sp. (95%), whereas isolates Bvpd17e and SctgJI demonstrated highest similarity to Micrococcus sp....

This study was conducted to purify and characterize an anti- C. albicans bacteriocin produced by Bacillus sp. Sh10 isolated from marine carpet clam, Paphia textile. Extracellularly produced bacteriocin was purified by 80 % ammonium sulfate precipitation and size exclusive gel chromatography using superdex-200 column chromatographyThe purification steps resulted in 3.68-fold increase in specific activity and recovery of 20.66 % of total activity.  The purity rate and molecular mass of 11 KDa of this compound were determined using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE).  Profile analysis of this bacteriocin by electrospray mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) showed 43% protein sequence coverage with a putative uncharacterized protein from Bacillus cereus strain B4264.
