Kant’s characterization of poverty lacks explanatory force and presents therefore major problems when it comes to grounding normative demands for fighting poverty.

Why do voters enthusiastically embrace political proposals promising cuts to public services, benefits, and welfare, forcing them to diminish their demands on the state? Answering these questions requires a focus on the worldviews and values that underlie neoliberal economic and political proposals. In the following, therefore, I will first characterize neoliberalism as a systemic doctrine; and then present its ethical view of the good life and its internal contradictions. In doing so, I will highlight different forms of social suffering inflicted by the neoliberal systemic doctrine, particularly on those who embrace it.

This attempt will be systematic and didactic, maybe at the price of being trivial sometimes, but systematicity and triviality frequently go together. The chapter is in three parts. In the first, I will try to define authoritarianism in general. In the second, I will try to establish what kinds of policies can be considered authoritarian. In the third, I will discuss the topic of the authoritarian personality. In all these sections, I will use examples from Brazil under Bolsonaro, although I will sometimes refer to examples from other countries.

I first make some preliminary methodological remarks (1) and present different meanings that have been attributed to the concept of social suffering (2). I then suggest that we adopt the concept of systemic suffering instead (3). The next step consists in showing how this form of suffering is connected to the existence of non-material aspects that contribute to social reproduction and that can be defined as systemic doctrines (4). Finally, I offer some remarks on possible strategies for criticizing systemic suffering (5).

In doing so, I will first differentiate needs from preferences, desires, and drives; and I will second develop a positive definition of their structure and of their relation to human functioning while, at the same time, stressing their social and political character.

It takes its starting point from Wolfgang Streeck’s claim that Habermas has failed to acknowledge that the real enemy of democracy is not bureaucracy but capitalism and that, therefore, he underestimates the role of capitalism in shaping the global order. It first returns to the diagnoses of late capitalism that Habermas developed in the 1970s and early 1980s and then moves on to some of his later writings. This will reveal that there was indeed a shift of emphasis from a critique of capitalism to a critique of technocracy, but not because of Habermas’ unawareness of the role of capitalism in shaping reality. Rather, he has come to objectify capitalism while looking for legal and political tools for reining it in instead of looking for possible alternatives to it.

The volume delves into the Kantian ideas of transcendental idealism, space, naturalism, epistemic normativity, communication, and systematic unity. The essays in the volume study Kant’s theories from a fresh perspective and offer new arguments for assenting that knowledge cannot account for itself without acknowledging the fundamental role of the cognitive subject. In doing so, they suggest that we reconsider Kant’s views as a powerful alternative to naturalism. Featuring readings by well-known Kant specialists and emerging scholars with unorthodox approaches to Kant’s philosophy, the volume fills a significant gap in the existing scholarship on the philosopher and his works. It will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of knowledge, philosophy, and epistemology.

It first briefly presents Philippe van Parijs’ argument for UBI based on the concept of real freedom for all. In doing so, it will focus on its general structure and central insight, without entering too much into other issues like the economic feasibility of UBI. It second briefly presents Kant’s concept of external freedom and especially focuses on some of its components to assess whether there is some closeness to van Parijs’ concept of real freedom. It further considers whether UBI is not only compatible with a Kantian position, but can be justified from such a position because it represents a tool for concretely realizing external freedom as presented in the Doctrine of Right and for attaining the ethical ideal of virtuosity presented in the Doctrine of Virtue.

Theories that seek to explain this phenomenon can be divided into two broad categories, depending on the perspective they take: historical or systemic. The paper briefly examines these two approaches before proposing an explanatory strategy that seeks to combine them and, at the same time, combine philosophy and sociology. In doing so, it will recur to Hegel's Philosophy of Right and to the conception of the relation between individual and political community defended by the German philosopher.

In the first section, it analyzes Kant’s concept of metaphysical principles of morals by establishing a connection between a metaphysics of morals and Kant’s concept of metaphysics in general and of metaphysics of nature in particular. It then discusses what is metaphysical in the Doctrine of Right and the Doctrine of Virtue. In its last section, it tackles the question of whether a non-metaphysical reading of Kant’s doctrines of right and of virtue is desirable if we want to remain faithful to Kant’s Enlightenment project.

It argues that Kant’s philosophy can still serve as a guide to navigate the turbulence of a globalized world in which we are faced by an imprescriptible social reality wherein moral values and ethical life models are becoming increasingly unstable. The volume draws on Kantian ethics to discuss various contemporary issues, including sustainable development, moral enhancement, sexism, and racism. It also tackles general concepts of practical philosophy such as lying, the different kinds of moral duties, and the kind of motivation one needs for doing what we consider the right thing.
Featuring readings by well-known Kant specialists and emerging scholars with unorthodox approaches to Kant’s philosophy, the volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of philosophy, politics and ethics. It will also appeal to moral theorists, applied ethicists and environmental theorists.

In the last few decades, Kantian specialists have increasingly manifested a purely exegetic and philological interest in Kant’s oeuvre, while contemporary philosophers and scientists tend to use Kant with scant hermeneutical care, thus misrepresenting or misunderstanding his positions. This volume countervails these tendencies by focusing more on specific themes of contemporary relevance in Kant’s writings. It looks to Kant’s political thought for insight on tackling issues such as freedom of speech, democracy and populism, intergenerational justice, economic inequality, money, poverty, international justice and gender/feminism.
Featuring readings by well-known Kant specialists and emerging scholars with unorthodox approaches to Kant’s philosophy, the volume fills a significant gap in the existing scholarship on the philosopher and his works. Created by the government of former Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Bolsa Família has been for a time the largest conditional cash transfer program in the world, serving more than 50 million Brazilians who had a monthly per capita income of less than USD 50. The program is regarded as one of the key factors behind the significant poverty reduction Brazil experienced during the first decade of the 21st century.
Bolsa Família is neither a credit scheme nor a loan. It is a program of civic inclusion: it aims to help citizens meet their most basic needs and sometimes just to survive. Its goal is to create citizenship, not to merely train the entrepreneurial spirit. Having this in mind, the authors of this book spent five years (2006-2011) interviewing more than 150 women registered in the program to see how the cash transfers impacted their everyday lives. The authors concluded that the program produces significant social impacts in the beneficiaries’ lives by increasing their levels of moral, economic and political autonomy, promoting citizenship.
Money, Autonomy and Citizenship - The Experience of the Brazilian Bolsa Família will be of interest to both academic researchers and public agents involved with the study, development and implementation of public policies aimed at reducing poverty and promoting social justice.

By considering Kant as a contemporary and not above moral responsibility, the authors explore his political theory as the philosophical foundation of human rights, discussing the right to citizenship, social dynamics and the scope of global justice. Focusing on topics such as society, Kant’s position on human rights, domestic economic justice, public education and moral virtue, the authors analyse the shortcomings of Kant’s modes of thought and help the reader to gain new perspective both on this classical thinker and on more contemporary issues.
