Jacobus does research in Linguistics of Premodern Hebrew (Syntax (synchronic and diachronic), Semantics, Discourse Analysis, Sociolinguistics and Applied Linguistics) as well as alterity and orality in Religious Translation. My research seeks to understand alterity (“otherness”) of ancient culture and to preserve it while representing it intelligibly for modern users. In my current research I utilise complexity theory to integrate seemingly disparate foci (pre-modern Hebrew linguistics and religious translation). The author, Hanan Eshel, who died on 8 April 2010, was professor in the Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology at the Bar-Ilan University, Ramat Gan, Israel. Eshel was a world-renowned expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls, the settlement at Qumran, the Bar Kokhba Revolt, numismatics and historical geography. He excavated the refuge caves on Ketef Jericho with Boaz Zissu and the refuge caves in the Ein Gedi area with Roi Porat. He oversaw a survey of the caves along the fault cliff between Ein Gedi and Qumran with Amos Frumkin and headed research expeditions to Qumran with Magen Broshi. As an archaeologist, Eshel combined archaeology and text, and in turn conducted textual research on various kinds of texts: the Bible, Dead Sea Scrolls and the texts of the Judean Desert, Second Temple literature, the Mishnah and the Talmud. The present book, which is an update of an earlier work written in Hebrew (2004), is an effort to integrate the disciplines of archaeology, history, and Qumran studies, demonstrating how the Dead Sea Scrolls can contribute to our understanding of the Hasmonean period (p. viii).

The aim of this paper is to investigate trends in colonial translation. This is achieved by analysing within postcolonial translation studies the translation strategies used by J J R Jolobe in transferring certain cultural aspects while translating Henry Haggard's King Solomon's Mines into Xhosa as Imigodi kaKumkani uSolomon. The translator expunged the colonial imperialistic and racial overtones of the source text by carefully choosing a series of translation strategies, resulting in the translation meeting the linguistic, literary, social and cultural norms of the target readership. Since colonial translations mostly belong to receiving cultures with developing literatures, when they become acceptable in the target culture they play an important role in the enrichment of the receiving culture.

Translation studies today : an overview An overview of the discipline that studies the activity of translation is presented. Starting with a discussion of the name and content of the discipline, an overview is offered of translation models, some of which focuses on the source text, the process of translation, the reception of the translated text and the culturally and socially bound character of translation. Since the early eighties there has been a tendency to move away from the normative and prescriptive approaches to translation and to adopt a descriptive approach towards the study of translated literature. Descriptive translation theorists attempt to account not only for textual strategies in the translated text, but also for the way in which the translation functions in the target cultural system. Finally, the implications of recent theoretical developments for translation practice are indicated.

In this paper, the sources of ritual impurity and the roles of various rituals and cultural practices in the rectification of impurity are compared in the Qumran community and Hare Krishna movement. In both sects, ritual impurity is caused by engaging in sexual activity, sexual emissions, childbirth, urination, defecation and disease. However, the Hare Krishna movement adds the cutting of hair and nails, sticking fingers through any of the body's orifices, and drinking and eating, all of which necessitate immediate washing. Regarding the rectification of ritual impurity, the following similarities emerge in both sects : (1) treatment of ritual impurity is largely based on lustrations and passage of time ; (2) the structures of the bathing facilities are strikingly similar ; (3) the prescribed periods of time are similar and often identical ; (4) separation of the sexes ; (5) the purifying potency of the sacrificial meal ; (6) the contagious nature of impurity ; (7) the purifying and atoning nature of studying the scriptures ; and (8) the importance of diet, dress and having a clear understanding of the precarious nature of spiritual (pure) life. The few differences found are explained by the more forgiving nature of Gaudiya Vaishnavas versus the punitive nature of Qumran sectarianism.

Translation Studies has grown in volume over recent years, not only in Europe and America, but also worldwide. Many generic and discipline-specific training packages are now offered at a wide variety of institutions. In a domain characterised by methodological heterogeneity and beset by problems of achieving consensus on what constitutes its object of study, the question arises whether there is a common core that could inform the design of a training course in our context, i.e. the Free State, South Africa and Africa? What are the characteristics of training in the broad field of Translation Studies and what kinds of area-specific training are appropriate for our circumstances?

The evidence supporting directly or indirectly the notion of the Semitic consonantal root as an independent morphological/lexical item has been questioned in recent literature. The assumption that words should be exclusively dismantled to morphemes leads to the conclusion that the knowledge of grammar makes direct reference to an entity such as a consonantal root. It is shown that this is not a necessary assumption and that the Semitic languages resemble non-Semitic languages in this regard. This paper provides an overview and evaluation of a selection of the evidence for and against the existence of a consonantal root in Semitic languages.

Traditional accounts of the quantifier kol in Biblical Hebrew do not describe or explain its status, syntactic distribution or scope adequately. Current research within both formal and functional approaches to universal quantifiers is of interest to Biblical Hebrew grammar. Both approaches use formal representations to describe quantifiers. These representations exhibit some of the properties commonly associated with the representations of standard logical systems, namely, the fact that an operator is associated with (or operates across) a scope / domain / range. In this paper it is argued that kol similarly exhibits the properties of an operator. Definiteness and number mark the scope of kol. Depending on the scope of kol, it can be interpreted or translated as an all or each type quantifier in English. The aim of the paper is to describe where a certain interpretation of kol should be expected and how the various uses of kol should be translated into English and Afrikaans.

Hurvitz (1997, 1999, 2000, 2006) argues that the language of Samuel-Kings represents a typologically older Hebrew than the language of Chronicles. To demonstrate that the typological difference reflects a genuine chronological difference, Hurvitz relies on externally dated evidence for the Hebrew language. Many scholars believe linguistic evidence precludes any attempt to date biblical literature to the Persian or later eras. In opposition, Young, et al. (2009) claim that data used to distinguish pre-exilic from post-exilic Hebrew are merely manifestations of synchronic styles available both to exilic and to post-exilic authors. This paper aims to further the debate in the light of functional and formal approaches to language change, e.g. Fischer (2007).

Sidnie White Crawford is professor of Hebrew Bible and chair of the Classics and Religious Studies Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is also past president of the W. F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem. She is one of the younger generation of Dead Sea Scroll scholars privileged to work on the first editions of the manuscripts. Frank Moore Cross invited her in 1986 to edit for her dissertation seven of the Cave 4 Deuteronomy manuscripts assigned to his lot (one of them contains excerpts of a harmonised text of Deuteronomy). In 1989 John Strugnell invited her to take over his work on the manuscripts at the time called Pentateuchal Paraphrases, and Emanuel Tov graciously accepted her as his junior collaborator on the project.

The nature of the vocabulary of the translation of Psalms in various Afrikaans Bible translations is examined and their impact on the predominant features of Biblical Hebrew poetry serves as an illustration. It is shown that translators use strategies such as omission (simplification) on the one hand and addition and paraphrase (explicitation) on the other, to translate Psalms into Afrikaans target text-oriented translations. Of course, these strategies pose no problem to translated prose, but in translated poetry, they destroy the very fabric of parallelism so familiar to readers of the earlier versions.

Assuming that the meaning of a word exceeds mere linguistic information per se in that it is also a cognitive and cultural representation of the world, would imply that the relationship between words vis-a-vis the experience of the language user should be established in order to find a cultural explanation for its meaning. Formerly information presented in dictionaries was primarily of a linguistic nature. This paper champions the cause of Biblical Hebrew lexicography to provide cultural as well as lexical information, i.e. the phenomenon of cultural transposition between lemma and translation equivalent as well as other means of presenting cultural information.

In this book, first published in 1985, Adele Berlin, Robert H. Smith Professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Maryland, analyses parallelism, a major feature of Hebrew poetry, from a linguistic perspective. This newly reprinted edition of Berlin's study (23 years since it was first published) features an additional chapter, 'The Range of Biblical Metaphors in Smikhut (= consuct state constructions)', by late Russian linguist Lida Knorina, written in 1994. Berlin calls this addition 'innovative and instructive to those who value the linguistic analysis of poetry'. It follows from Patrick D. Miller's suggestion in his 1985 review that Berlin should deal with the important poetic phenomena of metaphor, redundancy, and ambiguity in more detail.
