This paper presents the development process of TumTá, a wearable Digital Dance and Music Instrume... more This paper presents the development process of TumTá, a wearable Digital Dance and Music Instrument that triggers sound samples from foot stomps and Pisada, a dance-enabled MIDI pedalboard. It was developed between 2012 and 2017 for the use of Helder Vasconcelos, a dancer and musician formed by the traditions of Cavalo Marinho and Maracatu Rural from Pernambuco, Brazil. The design of this instrument was inspired by traditional instruments like the Zabumba and by the gestural vocabulary from Cavalo Marinho, to make music and dance at the same time. The development process of this instrument is described in the three prototyping phases conducted by three approaches: building blocks, artisanal, and digital fabrication. We analyze the process of designing digital technology inspired by Brazilian traditions, present the lessons learned, and discuss future works.

ABSTRACT New interface artefacts are changing the way we interact with machines, and this is part... more ABSTRACT New interface artefacts are changing the way we interact with machines, and this is particularly important for the musical domain. Conversely, the growing do-it-yourself (DIY) culture is subverting the manufacturer–consumer model. Regarding music, software such as Pure Data and Max/MSP allows users to build their own interactive systems. These factors contribute to the emergence of new digital musical instruments (DMI). However, DMI creation still requires a strong technical background. Based on the importance of prototyping in the process of designing things, this paper presents the Sketchument, an environment devoted to help non-technical users to easily prototype DMIs, using multiple input modes and allowing the integration to other useful technologies. From a lo-fi paper prototype, to functional ones, passing through movies, questionnaires, interviews, Sketchument has been developed following the same prototyping philosophy we intend to propose to its users. The cyclic process of design–implementation-evaluation has produced valuable feedback from potential users, which has been very useful to back design choices and to push modifications.

This paper emphasizes an important butoften ignored stakeholder present in the context of musical performance: the audience. We demonstrate the practicalapplication of an audience focused methodology through a casestudy (‘Illusio’), discuss the obtained results and possibleimprovements for future works.

It also presents a case study which describes and evaluates its practical application.The proposed process could be also utilized as a very useful step hendesigning new DMIs, providing a structured tool for incremental development of prototypes based on user feedback.
