Abstract The dissemination of information on the geological reality to which we belong is still deficient, hindering their understanding by most people. In order to change this, it was prepared a protocol that can be used for assesment, inventory, and evaluation of geological and mining heritage places. This method is based on the description and quantification of aspects and variables on the selected geosites enabling the identification, classification and comparison between certain locations and...

The studied site is a stream at base level flowing along the western border of the range. Its identification was accomplished by using remote sensing techniques including the analysis of 3D slope models generated with shuttle radar topography mission images. The main geomorphological features of the identified site were surveyed in a 1:500 scale. In addition, seven stratigraphic logs are described. A regional geologic compilation and facies diagrams were used as a basis for the integration of the geomorphological and stratigraphic data, which produced some conclusions about the recent tectonic reactivations at the eastern border of Sao Francisco Craton. The results point to a local eastward tilting of the Espinhaco range. This fact is in accordance with previous findings in neighboring areas and results in the asymmetric evolution of the fluvial valley, as well as the regional relief.

The work aimed to produce basic information about habitat effects on diversity, as well as about how the ant fauna in a such buffered forest habitat, as the litter layer, could respond the climate variation in a short and long term. We sampled two years in two distinct forest physiognomies, which respond to different geomorphologic backgrounds, in dry and rainy seasons. Species composition, richness and abundance of these forests were distinct. However, both forests hosted similar numbers of rare and specialized, habitat demanding species, thus suggesting both are similarly well preserved, despite distinct physiognomies. However, the lower and more open forest was, more susceptible to dry season effects, showing a steeper decline in species numbers in such season, but similar numbers in the wet seasons. The pattern varied between years, which corroborates the hypothesis...

From these data, it was possible to establish a picture regarding the paleomorphology and paleodrainage of the area. The methodological steps adopted consisted of the definition of sedimentary facies, as well as the establishment of their sedimentary provenance (U/Pb method in detrital zircons) and deposition age (OSL in quartz). Through the facies analyses, it was possible to show channel facies (Gt) associated with debris flows (Gmm) and sieve deposits (Gh). In the sedimentary provenance stage, spectra of ages congruent with those found in literature for the Moeda and Caue Formations were identified, suggesting that the Moeda mountain range is a source area. We also analyzed data on the sediments of the current bed, which indicate the same provenance, showing that the current courses constitute an embedded analog of the paleochannels. The data herein obtained corroborate the hypothesis that the eastern periphery of the Bonfim Complex was dominated by a system of alluvial fans between 9.5 ± 1 and 15.5 ± 1.6 ka before present, whose remnants are preserved on the current hilltops and mid slopes of the basement landscape.

A large population of the giant Amazon river turtle (Podocnemis expansa) nests along the beaches ... more A large population of the giant Amazon river turtle (Podocnemis expansa) nests along the beaches of the Crixás-Açu River in the central western region of Brazil. In spite of the existence of several point bars in the area, only a selected group of beaches is used for nesting by P. expansa. Geological aspects, such as river width and depth, beach height above 200 cm with sandy sediments, were indispensable for the choice of these nesting sites. The relatively reduced dimensions of the point bars and the great number of turtles, which nest in the same local, contributed to the existence of a high nest concentration. The rapid rise of the Crixás-Açu River caused the flooding of the beaches and the drowning of hatchlings and embryos. It is estimated that nearly all the nests were lost. The height of the nesting place and the time of flooding related to the incubation period are decisive in embryo survivorship. The Retiro, Júnior, Assombrado and Limoeiro beaches, which are situated at heights of 183 to 310 cm, were inundated on 8 November 2000. The Barreira Branca beach, with a height of up to 380 cm was completely inundated on 13 December 2000. All of these beaches were flooded before the hatchlings emerged.
