Despite its richness in bioactive molecules, with several scientifically proven applications, there is little information on the insecticidal potential of its species. This study aimed to assess the insecticidal potential of essential oils from the species Lippia thymoides (Martius & Schauer); Lippia lasiocalycina (Schauer) and Lippia insignis (Moldenk) against Nasutitermes corniger (Motschulsky) (Isoptera-Termitidae). Insecticidal activity was evaluated by exposure to a contaminated surface, whereby plastic pots were lined with filter paper and imbibed in 1.5 ml of solution containing essential oils (10 µl/ml), with 10 N. corniger specimens per pot. The mortality count was performed at 24 and 48 h. The LC50 was determined by diluting the essential oils to concentrations of 0, 0.625, 1.25, 2.5, 5.0 and 10 µl/ml, which were chemically analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. The data indicated high toxicity ...

A completely randomized design was used, with four replications totaling 24 experimental units. The weight gain of each batch of animals per experimental unit (E.U.) was evaluated at densities of 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 fingerlings m-3. For controls, a Water Recirculation System with 248 fingerlings m-3 was used. The fingerlings were fed commercial feed containing 35% protein and brown sugar as a carbohydrate source at a C:N ratio of 20:1. Dissolved oxygen, total ammonia nitrogen, pH, and temperature were monitored daily, and nitrite and alkalinity were monitored weekly. The analysis of weight gain data obtained a linear function y = - 0.0017X2 + 3.724X í 87.77, with r2 = 0.864, coefficient of variation = 14.23%, and correlation coefficien...

Harley & J.F.B. Pastore). This species is exploited based on extractivism; thus, genetic erosion is a potential risk, and studies focused on strategies for conservation, domestication, and breeding of this species are essential. The objective of this work was to identify interactions in the environment that may predict growth and development of this species based on ecogeographic studies. Data of soil, climate, topography, geomorphology, phytogeography, and biome were collected at naturally occurring sites in the central-north, northeast, and metropolitan regions of Salvador, state of Bahia, and in the eastern and rural mesoregions of the state of Sergipe, Brazil. Data were collected in situ and at specialized sites of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Brazilian National Institute of Space Rese...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the centesimal and mineral composition of the meals offered by the program and adequacy to the nutritional recommendations in three municipalities of the state of Bahia, Brazil. Centesimal composition of meals was determined according to the reference guidelines and mineral composition was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry. Non-parametric analysis of variance was used to test the differences of the medians among the municipalities and Student-t test to compare the means between the two sampling periods. There were inadequacies in the carbohydrate, lipid and protein contents, and none of the municipalities reached the recommendation of 20%. Mineral concentration, especially Fe, Se, Cu and K were much lower than expected. Sodium leve...

Across-sectional study was carried out from August 2008 to October 2009 at the Bahiana School of Medicine involving 260 pregnant women without symptoms of urinary tract infection. The following exclusion criteria were considered: presence of clinical signs such as fever, dysuria, vesical tenesmus, lumbar pain, history of active genital bleeding or loss of amniotic fluid, use of antimicrobial agents in the 30 days prior to sample collection, and refusal to participate in the project. The presence of single pathogen bacterial colonization ≥10(5) CFU/mL in the urine sample obtained from the middle jet was considered to be a dependent variable. The predictive factors evaluated were as follows: age, race, marital status, schooling, gestational age, hypertension, anemia, vaginal infection, sickle cell trait and previous h...
