Gradenwitz, from J. de M. Johnson, and Lucy Hunt to H.I. Bell, and a single letter from Gossmann to Bell. Also included is correspondence from Dr. Erna Hollitscher to Gossmann and to Lucy Hunt, all of which highlight the struggles confronting a German refugee in Britain during the Second World War.

This fragment of papyrus provides a new attestation of a red-ink abstract from the register of ephebes declared in the city of Antinoopolis. In addition to new names of Antinoites, its interest lies in the fact that
it is the first explicit case where the abstract was issued in the same year as the registration was made; in other known cases, the abstract may have been produced later. A consolidated list of the tribes and demes
of Antinoopolis is provided.

The grammateus project aims to produce a typology of Greek documentary papyri and to develop a digital instrument which will allow the display and comparison of models of different document types. Where previous typologies have concentrated solely on content, the grammateus project will take a more holistic approach, where the physical properties of the papyrus will be considered alongside the layout and content, allowing us to assess the relationship between them.

grammateus is a research environment that offers a wide and analytic coverage of attested types of Greek documentary papyri from Egypt. This is precisely typology, by which we mean a study of the defining criteria that allowed scribes to give to the documents they were preparing a distinctive appearance corresponding to the intended use. Such criteria were not made explicit by the scribes themselves, or through an ancient handbook that would have spelt out the rules to be followed. Nonetheless, a certain consistency in the production of documents indicates that some rules were indeed transmitted along a chain of scribes who were active in Egypt from the late fourth century BCE till the seventh century CE, with some variation contingent on time and the place of writing.

grammateus is produced by a team of researchers based at the University of Geneva and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The web platform is in Open Access, free of charge. The underlying data is also made available to other researchers in a dedicated repository.

Our work relies on the use of papyri.info, a portal that gathers metadata from the Duke Databank of Documentary Papyri (DDBDP), the Heidelberger Gesamtverzeichnis der griechischen Papyrusurkunden Ägyptens (HGV), and Trismegistos (TM). Finally, we draw extensively on secondary literature, such as monographs and articles that contain information or elaboration on the typology of papyri. This material is referenced in our bibliography. Whenever possible, we link our own platform to other relevant databases and printed literature.
