De- spite the fact that we are discussing the most prominent Romanian theologian of the 20th century, there is currently no comprehensive, documented biography of Father Dumitru Stăniloae that has been produced by an academic group based on archival sources. Instead, there are only a few attempts to present his bi- ography, which often contain elementary mistakes or aspects that have been mystified. The data collected in this study represents only a portion of the multifaceted experiences that characterized the life of Father Dumitru Stăniloae. His life encompassed a rich tapestry of academic, familial, and spiritual fulfillment. It is incumbent upon us to elucidate these aspects through the examination of the archives, church documents from the archives of the diocesan centers and the Holy Synod, the personal testimonies of contemporaries found in personal archives, as well as the numerous publications that Fr. Staniloae bequeathed to poster- ity. These documents, in conjunction with his personal experience and communion, may serve as evidence of the witness, confession, and holiness of Fr. Dumitru Stăniloae during the challenging period of the 20th century.

In accordance with synodal decision no. 71/2021, subsequently amended on July 14 2024 by decision no. 6955/2024 of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, the canonisation of Father Dumitru Stniloae with the title Holy Confessor Priest Dumitru Stniloae was approved. Following the decision of July 14 2024, despite the three-and-a-half-year interval since the initial proposal for his canonisation, a number of opinions and speculations emerged regarding his collaboration with the fascist or far-right movement or the communist regime. In the present study, we will examine the attitude of Father Dumitru Stniloae towards nationalism, nazism/fascism, legionarism, communism and anti-Semitism. To do so, we will consider his published articles, conferences and theses, as well as the interpretations that current historiographical and theological research offers on these positions.

This study delves into the relationship between the Romanian Orthodox Church and the communist authorities, highlighting the various legal and canonical strategies employed to exert control over religious entities. Specifically, the research focuses on the Romanian Orthodox Church's alignment with communist regulations, leading to legitimacy and canonicity in state interventions. Through an examination of legal sources and archival materials, the study emphasizes the changing dynamics of religious freedom in Romania during the communist era. An in-depth prosopographical investigation is conducted into the case of Father Arsenie Boca, shedding light on the canonical framework of the Romanian Orthodox Church in the early communist years and its implications for modern understanding of this period.

This general sinodality is achieved through three models of manifestation: sobornicity, synodality of bishops, and extended synodality through conciliarity. Sobornicity emphasizes the unity of the local church, while synodality is a condition for sobornicity, maintaining communion among churches. Conciliarity represents an expanded form of synodality at a universal level, responsible for for- mulating the teaching of faith, canonical discipline, and liturgical prac- tices. Conciliarity is not separated from sobornicity, but is fulfilled in sobornicity through the reception of conciliar activity by the entire ec- clesial body of the bishop, clergy, and laity. The text also discusses the relations between these concepts and how overemphasis on one aspect can lead to ecclesiological imbalances and impact the life of the Or- thodox Church.

It examines the theological and canonical aspects of this process, detailing how it has evolved over time and the different criteria applied. The paper also explores the historical and doctrinal developments in canonization and scrutinizes specific instances within the Orthodox tradition. Additionally, it highlights the varied approaches of different Orthodox Churches to canonization and delves into the canonization of new martyrs who suffered or were martyred during the communist regimes in Russia and Romania. Preliminary analysis is essential in assembling a dossier for a canonization proposal within the Orthodox Church. This entails identifying the canonical Tradition's criteria for sainthood, determining the basis upon which a person is declared, acknowledged, and inscribed among the Saints. The discourse extends to the role of the Synod of an Autocephalous Church: does it confer sainthood or merely recognize it? Furthermore, the paper interrogates the criteria necessary for proclaiming sainthood and ensuring the accurate verification of an individual's life, activities, and orthodoxy of faith, thus safeguarding against erroneous canonization decisions.
This paper examines the views of Orthodox canonists on the relationship between the Holy Scriptur... more This paper examines the views of Orthodox canonists on the relationship between the Holy Scripture and Canon Law in current academic research. It explores two general positions within Orthodox Canon Law: one that considers the Holy Scripture as a fundamental source of Canon Law, and another that postulates a conflict between the principles of love and grace found in Scrip- ture and the legal aspects of Canon Law. The first position categorizes the Holy Scripture as divine written law, while the Holy Tradition is seen as divine unwritten law. The sources of law are further classified into fundamental, historical, and practical sources. The division of Canon Law also includes distinctions such as divine or natural Church Law, common law versus law, and old law versus new law. The text references various canonists and their works to support these classifications. It highlights the understanding of contemporary Orthodox canonists who continue to recognize the Holy Scripture as a source of divine written law, emphasizing the importance of formulating human laws by divine justice. In general, it is emphasized that all the canons of the Church included in the fundamental collection, being regarded as an essential part of the Patristic tradition and the synodal manifestation of the Church, can be understood as manifestations of the ecclesial experience across time and space, guided by the divine grace of the Holy Spirit, and as a continuation of biblical rules and norms.

The research starts from the difference between the dogmatic meaning of heresy and the canonical understanding of heresy according to the baptismal theology of the Canons of the Orthodox Church from St. Basil the Great to the Canons of the Council of Trullo. The second part of my paper focuses on the meaning of heresy according to some texts of Orthodox Canonists after the great schism, especially St. Nikodemus the Hagiorite, and the canonical practice regarding receiving heretical and heterodox groups into the Orthodox Churches and how the Orthodox Theology perceives different Christian denominations from the point of view of Orthodox Canon Law.

Father Stăniloae received two volumes of the Greek Philokalia from Zian Boca, who brought them from Mount Athos following a scholarship awarded by Metropolitan Nicolae Bălan. In the preface to the first volume, Father Stăniloae expresses his regret over the absence of critical editions of the Philokalia text. The existing editions could not be utilized by the translator due to the material limitations of the time, specifically during the spring of 1944, when Fr Stăniloae started the translation of the Philokalia. Consequently, Father Stăniloae relied on the Greek edition of the Philokalia and the Greek texts within Migne's collection, utilizing these sources to discern the meaning closest to a potential original text. From Father Stăniloae's accounts, it is evident that three significant sources were employed in the translation of the Philokalia, in addition to the Greek edition: 1) the translation by Bishop Gherasim Safirin, preserved in manuscript at the Frăsinei Monastery; 2) the translations by Hieromonk Serafim Popescu; and 3) copies of older Romanian manuscripts from Athos brought by Serafim Popescu and Arsenie Boca. The article attempts to examine these three primary sources utilized by Father Stăniloae.

The discussion emerged before the Easter of 2023, primarily on social media platforms, and revolved around the possibility of changing the date of Easter to align with synodal decisions and promote unity with other Christian denominations. The debate quickly divided into two camps: one advocating for the change to facilitate joint celebration and address challenges faced by Orthodox communities in the diaspora and mixed families, and the other camp arguing for the preservation of the current calculation of Easter, emphasizing the significance of the Orthodox tradition. This research aims to offer an objective analysis of the debate, examining the different perspectives and arguments presented according to the Canonical and Patristic tradition of the Orthodox Church. By providing an academic assessment of the discourse, it seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding the date of Easter in the Orthodox Church, moving beyond the polarized rhetoric that dominated the current discussion.

I devoted the first part of the research to the neo-patristic synthesis proposed by Fr Georges Florovsky at the Theological Congress of Athens 1936. The second part emphasizes the development of patristic studies in Romanian Orthodox theology, based on the neo-patristic synthesis. In the next part of the paper, I have analysed how the academic theology in Romania discovered the Philokalia and how it was translated by Fr Dumitru Stăniloae. This translation of the Philokalia led to a revival of Romanian Orthodox academic theology.

Arsenie Boca, and to highlight their importance for the understanding of her poetic, theological, translatological and spiritual vision. The difficulty of such an approach lies in the way in which the researcher, as a person outside the epistolary dialogue, approaches the texts in question, especially in the context of the analysis of letters that can undoubtedly be considered letters of spiritual confession. While preserving intact this mystery of the relationship between confessor and disciple, the tradition of the Orthodox Church had previously known this epistolary genre and made it known through the correspondence of some of the Fathers of the Church to their disciples. These letters, perceived in this context of understanding, can be considered mystical and theological texts and analysed as texts compatible with the vision of the Philokalia.

The author attempts in this study to analyse the canonical texts of the Orthodox Church in order ... more The author attempts in this study to analyse the canonical texts of the Orthodox Church in order to identify certain canonical institutions used by the Church for its pastorship and mission in rural communities and how rural parishes were canonically supervised. To Christianise villages, the Byzantine Church manifested a certain canonical creativity, creating the institution of chorepiscopate responsible for rural ecclesial life and the care for the poor in rural communities. The author emphasizes the full episcopal status of the chorbishops. At the end of the fourth century, the canonical texts limit the canonical privileges of chorbishops even for their rural jurisdiction, prohibiting not just the ordination for the village but the right to ordain priests and deacons for rural communities. Simultaneously with the development of the office of chorbishops, the rank of periodeutai also appeared. These priests resided in the city and were sent by the urban bishop to visit the rural communities as well. They were supervisors of rural communities under the authority of the urban bishop and they can be considered an important link between urban and rural communities, but as well an instrument of exercising episcopal power and control in rural parishes that were previous dominated by the figure of chorbishops.
