The intention of the present paper is to re-evaluate the surviving records surrounding the career and activity of Marcus Polnar, member of an influential family of Transylvanian Saxons living in Sighișoara. Furthermore, these sources have been misinterpreted over the last century and a half, leading to confusions among scholars. It will be argued now that Marcus started with a well-off lineage, to which he added, through academic background and social nétworking, a réspéctablé public position, working his way into a trué ‘bright star’ of his kin. By cooperating with his brother, Michael, and by endorsing the careers of his four nephews, Marcus Polnar contributed in a decisive manner to establishing and securing influence and authority for his family, beyond the sta...

Following recent suggestions and initiatives, the present paper intends to continue with the investigation of correspondence in late medieval Transylvania, focusing for the first time on private letters. In this context, the discussion revolves around some letters discovered recently in rather unusual circumstances, namely letters and fragments of letters found in manuscripts or printed books from Sibiu (within the Library of the Brukenthal National Museum) that were already circulating within the same region in the Late Middle Ages. The unusual circumstances regarding their finding, the fragmentary state of some of the letters, and also the particular difficulties associated with the analysis of every written text produced during the Middle Ages in very informal circumstances, require a complex methodological approach, which combines palaeography, prosopography and institutional history at a local level. Also, the importance of the recycling and reusing of writing materials should not be forgotten, an aspect that is frequently discussed nowadays in the field of medieval studies. The investigation of these private letters (and additional similar examples) from Transylvania relies upon the superior experience in international research to deal critically with such sources situated between cultural history and the history of everyday life.

Just before 1200 and just after 1240 two Cistercian abbeys, first a male house at Cârța, not far from Sibiu (Sancta Maria in Kerz), and then a nunnery in Brașov (Sancta Katherina), were established in Transylvania, a borderland of the territories ruled by the Hungarian crown inhabited by Eastern-rite Christians, especially Romanians. Conventionally, often following the model of older historiography on Frankish Greece, modern scholars have understood the arrival of the Cistercian Order in this remote area as an effort at conversion initiated by the papal see. Reassessing older evidence within a new historiographical paradigm and adding newly discovered documentary sources, this paper argues instead that the Cistercian mission in Transylvania was tied to local factors, cultural, social, and economic, and thus the White Monks endured as long as their cooperation with the elite of the German colonists in southern Transylvania remained fruitful. In the light of the evidence, and similar ...

This paper selectively explores three types of texts written and delivered by parish clergy within countryside communities of the Transylvanian Saxons before the introduction of the religious Reformation in the 1540s. It argues that the monumental sermon-collection authored in the second half of the 16th century by the Lutheran pastor Damasus Dürr, who also served in a rural church, had been anticipated by the intellectual work of secular priests who lived and were active around 1500 in the same cultural environment. As a well-educated and self-aware group, the parish priests of the Transylvanian German settlements, either urban or rural, represent the first compact category of clearly defined intellectuals in this region. For their professional needs, they produced or used various texts of a pragmatic nature, from accounting records to sermon literature. These plebani took advantage of every opportunity to write on and annotate the books they had in their possession, writing down facts of historical relevance or adaptations of model-sermons, performed in specific contexts. Various evidence of elaborate preaching, alongside the ownership of books and the existence of a dense network of elementary schools organized by the secular church, display a new image of the (mostly Latin) countryside literacy in the late medieval territories populated by Transylvanian Saxons: an expansion and mirroring of the urban literacy and its complex forms, predicting its subsequent evolution.

The following text has two main objectives: on the one hand, it intends to introduce the reader in a very cursory manner to some of the most important contributions made by the medieval university not only to the general development of higher education, distinguishable up until today, but also to the history of pre-modern European society. On the other hand, acknowledging the importance of university for the transformation (and “Europeanization”) of Transylvania from the second half of the 14th century until the 1550s, the author reflects briefly upon significant investigations concerning university, academic life and intellectuals in the Middle Ages conducted by scholars and research groups (especially during the last two decades) of the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca.

The present paper deals with a very important written source regarding the history of higher education in northern Transylvania from 1565 to 1626, a register with loan contracts concerning money necessary for university education abroad. The agreements were made between the Lutheran Bistrița-Chapter, on the one side, and young men and their guarantors, on the other. Only selectively and superficially discussed by previous scholars in the 19th century, exclusively from the perspective of the development of local education in and around Bistrița, the source material bears a greater significance in terms of the efforts made by the local church and community to establish and perpetuate its own intelligentsia, regardless of the social and economic background of the gifted young men who intended to complete their education. The authors of the study address the following questions: who established the educational fund, who administered the money, who were the beneficiaries and their guarantors, and under which circumstances was money awarded. The information provided by the Bistrița-register is integrated into a larger prosopographical picture of the individuals mentioned, the majority related to the Church of the Bistrița region, and it is evaluated also from a cultural point of view, the notarial structuring of the contracts, the autograph writing and the use of the personal seals recording a highly developed literate and legal mentality with strong roots in the late medieval, pre-Reformation, tradition. The present investigation intends to contribute to a deeper understanding of the support given to students by Transylvanian communities in order to build an intellectual elite educated in Central and Western Europe.

For distinct reasons, Romania has not yet been part of the international effort to exploit me- dieval curial sources, preserved either in the Vatican and Roman Archives, or in domestic col- lections. Nowadays, however, this view is beginning to change. An increased interest in these remarkable documentary texts has been encouraged and facilitated primarily by multiple ini- tiatives that intend to bring papal or curial documents from regional repositories closer to re- searchers in the form of digital data. In a very short time, international, national, or institu- tional projects providing data bases and/or collections of digital images of medieval sources have become indispensable research tools. Transylvania, in particular, once a province of the Kingdom of Hungary and thus part of the medieval Latin world, benefits significantly from this wave of computer supported and controlled endeavours (both old and more recent). The in- tention of my presentation is to discuss how medieval ...

The objective of the present paper is to introduce to a wider audience, at a very early stage of development, the initial results of a Romanian joint initiative of AI software engineers and palaeographers in an experimental project aiming to assist and improve the transcription effort of medieval texts with AI software solutions, uniquely designed and trained for the task. Our description will start by summarizing the previous attempts and the mixed-results achieved in e-palaeography so far, a continuously growing field of combined scholarship at an international level. The second part of the study describes the specific project, developed by Zetta Cloud, with the aim of demonstrating that, by applying state of the art AI Computer Vision algorithms, it is possible to automatically binarize and segment text images with the final scope of intelligently extracting the content from a sample set of medieval handwritten text pages.

The present paper aims to resume, after an intermission of more than 100 years, a generous research subject, well represented on the international and regional scene, but completely out of the spotlight of Romanian historians: the history of the medieval book from Transylvania and its post-medieval destiny. The research perspectives focus on two major directions: on the one hand, the analysis of the historical contexts that favoured the keeping and uninterrupted use of medieval books during the 16 th-17 th Centuries, on the other hand the study of fragments detached from medieval manuscripts and re-used as materials for the covers and bindings of modern volumes. The destiny of the books, fata libelli, in the interval between their pragmatic use and their transformation into cultural heritage objects during the 19 th century, comes forth as a distinct research theme at a national level. The preliminary assessments on this research topic in Romania concern the circumscription of the topic, the review of sources at the disposal of researchers, and also a scrutiny of international research and results.

The present text focuses on a particularly important written source for the history of higher education in northern Transylvania between 1565 and 1626, more exactly a register comprising loan contracts for the financing of university studies abroad. The agreement protocols were concluded between the Lutheran Church, the Bistrița Chapter, and young men, along with their guarantors. This source, studied partially and superficially in the 19 th century strictly from the perspective of the evolution of local education in Bistrița, has a greater significance in regard to the efforts made by the community to form and perpetuate its own intellectual elite, regardless of the social-economic condition of young men capable and eager to complete their education. The authors of the study deal with the history of setting up and administering the fund, who were the beneficiaries and guarantors, the conditions for granting the loans. The information provided by the Bistrița register is integrated into a larger prosopographic context, aiming to contribute to a deeper understanding of the support provided by Transylvanian communities to students, with the end scope of aggregating an intellectual elite, educated in Central and Western Europe.

The present paper focuses on the interconnected relationship between higher education, ecclesiastical career and local learning in the area inhabited by the Transylvanian Saxons during the “long 15th century”. This discussion revolves around the phenomenon of book accumulation that can be linked to the priests and the parish church of Cisnădie/Heltau, a small settlement with urban aspirations in southern Transylvania. The clergy of Cisnădie’s Saint Walpurgis parish church took advantage of the availability of university education in Central European institutions founded in the second half of the 14th century (Prague, Vienna and Cracow), and brought back from their academic sojourns the texts needed for the daily functioning of the parish: sermon collections, canonical treatises, manuals on pastoral ministry. By producing in turn local writings, the literate clergymen used such books as vehicles of both instruction and transfer of knowledge, as well as for an improved pastoral care.

20-21 May 2022, Cluj-Napoca, Aula Regele Ferdinand (Strada Napoca, nr. 11)
This exploratory workshop aims to discuss preaching texts and their communication in several liminal spaces of the later medieval Western/Latin world in a comparative manner. Medieval preaching has been fruitfully studied as a means of inciting believers to lead a life according to their faith and as a channel of communication between religious agents and a larger lay public. However, it has been less explored from the perspective of institutional, intellectual, and social developments in ‘frontier’ areas, broadly construed as both geographical and cultural spaces, such as Iberia, Scandinavia, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Baltic Rim.
A workshop supported by a UEFISCDI grant, project PN-III-P4-PCCF-2016-0064: “The Rise of an Intellectual Elite in Central Europe. Making Professors at the University of Vienna, 1389-1450”.

In the high Middle Ages, a novel concept of religious community overran the occidental world: the Dominican Order. Unlike earlier religious orders who confined monks to the purview of praying the liturgy and living a life of contemplative seclusion, the Dominicans focused on engaging with the broad community beyond the convent walls. The result was a hitherto unseen interpenetration of a religious order into the intellectual and cultural realities surrounding it. This conference aims at stimulating interdisciplinary debate on Dominican culture and Dominican theological thought, seen as two aspects of the same medieval and early modern reality. The conference thus strives to bridge a gap between cultural and intellectual history that often has characterized modern scholarship on the history of the Dominican Order.

Taking notes is a widespread practice: students, travelers, writers and scientists jot down information, impressions and empirical observations, all the while encoding these notes with their previous intellectual experience and their envisioned future use for them. The present workshop aims at decoding the notebook of Henricus de Rinfeldia, a Dominican who studied at the University of Vienna. It is preserved in the ms. Basel, Universitätsbibliothek A-X-44 on whose peculiarities and particularities the RISE project is centered. Among the elements that make this artefact extremely attractive for the researcher one can count its special material structure, the multitude of ideas that it transmits, as well as the fact that it bears witness to the teachings of the first generation of professors at the University of Vienna, whose names have been brought to the fore by this impressive witness from the obscurity of the cartularies. The papers to be presented are meant to shed new light on the practice of taking notes as well as on the role notebooks had in spreading knowledge, by analyzing the manuscript from several perspectives (codicological, paleographical, theological and philosophical).

1. tracciare un panorama storiografico completo dei temi di ricerca finora affrontati sul ceto notarile;
2. ripercorrere l’eterogeneità di utilizzo delle fonti notarili in molti filoni della ricerca tanto in consolidate tradizioni storiografiche che in ambiti innovativi come la ricostruzione della circolazione delle persone, oltre che delle merci, o delle reti di connessione tra comunità e individui;
3. evidenziare le aree di attività (tipo di atti: testamenti, vendite, contratti matrimoniali, credito, ecc.) e clientela (uomini e donne, classi sociali coinvolte, istituzioni, ecc.) dei notai pubblici nelle aree urbane e rurali, confrontando il diverse realtà urbane, regionali e nazionali con lo scopo di arrivare a una storia comparativa dei notai in un contesto socio-economico e dinamico;
4. individuare nuove piste di ricerca per la storia del notariato collegando l’asse spaziale con nuove prospettive e modalità di approccio intersecando il rapporto fra notai e territori, tra la loro mobilità e quella della clientela, le loro specializzazioni etc.;

This workshop explores the theory and practice of medieval translation in biblical, academic, literary and pastoral contexts through multiple perspectives on language, politics, ideology, dissemination, cultural transmission and making translations accessible
to modern audiences. Several papers focus on theoretical discussions of translation in the later Middle Ages, particularly as witnessed by surviving contributions to an academic debate about biblical translation in Oxford around 1400. The workshop
will mark the completion of work on ‘Butler, Palmer, Ullerston: an Oxford debate c.1400 on biblical language’, an edition of four treatises on translation by J. Catto, A. Hudson and E. Solopova (Toronto, forthcoming). The conference will be held in
memory of Dr Jeremy Catto (1939-2018), Tutorial Fellow in Medieval History at Oriel College (1970-2006).

On the 15th of February 2019 beginning at 9.30 AM there will be a workshop-conference with the title Church and Society in Late Medieval Transylvania [Egyház és társadalom a késő-középkori Erdélyben] organized by the Transylvanian Museum Society's Research Institute. The venue of the event is the EME auditory at Napoca str. nr. 2. During the conference 10 scientists from Hungary and Transylvania (Hungarians and Romanians) will lecture in English on the different aspects of the 14th-16th century Transylvanian church history (for instance the relationship between the Transylvanian diocese and the Vatican, the development of the monastery network, personal history analysis of diverse layers of the church, changes in religious attitude and church literacy). Following the discussions the event will be concluded by a book presentation during which two new and significant publications, one from the Romanian one from the Hungarian reference literature in church history.

This research underscores the significance of the Transylvanian Saxons as actors in the cultural history of Europe.

The presence of books in southern Transylvania (together with various other expressions of writing) draws the complex picture of a literate society, in which gifted young men attended a well-organised network of elementary schools, continued their training abroad, then returned from European universities, and served their home communities through ecclesiastical or secular careers.

This volume addresses less studied aspects of the culture of medieval Transylvania, such as the local decoration and illumination of manuscripts, charters, and printed books. It also aims to provide an update on the current state of research concerning the literate behaviour of the Saxon communities in medieval Transylvania, while suggesting future research directions.
