He was a gifted translator from Hebrew and Latin into Spanish,as well as a learnedlexicographer. Among hisworks there is the lexicon IrDavid . Amsterdam 1638, to which we devote the present publication. In the Latin prologue, Lara comments on the purpose of the work: "to explain the origins and the meaning of very difficult voices among the rabbinical sources... which will provide great help in order to understand more deeply. The Greek and Latin loanwords in rabbinical literature had already been identified in this literary corpus, especially in later works such as, for example, in the Midrash. The most important of these lexicographical contributions is the 'Arukh of Nathan ben Jehiel. But all these Greek and Latin terms were written in Hebrew characters. The main contribution of David de Lara to the study of these terms was to identify them in Greek and Latin characters, to present them systematically, and to incorporate them into the lexicography of the classical language. Such identification was essential for the semantic study of these terms in the context of rabbinic literature and for an understanding of phonetic and morphological processes of Eastern Koiné and early Byzantine Greek. David de Lara provided the basis for the scientific study of rabbinical Greek and was the starting point for the modern lexicography by Samuel Krauss and others lexicographers. The purpose of the present publication is to offer a punctilious edition of the lexicon of Lara in its original Hebrew, Greek, and Latin characters accompanied by a general introduction and lexical comments. The edition is divided into the following chapters: 1. An introductory study of the author, his work, cultural environment, and the importance of a textual edition. 2. A detailed bibliography about the author and linguistic tools for research (dictionaries, concordances, and grammars) and scientific literature. 3. Lara´s original Latin prologue letter with a translation and additional commentaries. 4. A modern edition of the lexicon, based on copies preserved in the Library of Universidad de Granada and the National Library of Israel, which includes a clear presentation of each item and its appropriate definition in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Spanish, and other languages. This edition includes also a critical apparatus of different lemmas. 5. Lexical appendices of the different languages. Despite the many difficulties presented by the preparation of this edition, we have been motivated to continue by the intellectual richness of the work of David de Lara.
