Firstly, it establishes afresh the chronology of his poems and his biography —from birth up to Febrer’s service to Martin the Younger, King of Sicily. Secondly, it analyses the author’s acquaintance with Occitan, French, and Italian poetry, and stresses the influence of Arnaut Daniel’s poetry and Dante’s rime petrose, as well as that of several French lyrics—including Guillaume de Machaut’s poems on an absent lover. Thirdly, it suggests that Febrer’s fifteen extant poems make up a collection dedicated to Queen Mary of Sicily by 1401. Finally, this article reassesses Febrer’s place in the history of medieval Catalan poetry on account of both his creativity and his influence on fifteenth-century Catalan poets.

While at times the selection of vocabulary unfolds the literary traditions of source texts, on other occasions translators deploy target poetic registers that are absent from the source text. The authors illustrate these strategies with attention to two medieval Catalan authors: Bernat Metge (ca. 1348-1413) and Ausiàs March (1400-1459). Metge wrote his Llibre de Fortuna i Prudència (ca. 1381) in a Romance genre of considerable Occitan ascent. Latin works, however, were the actual source of inspiration for key components of his work, including vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. The translation of March’s poetry during the early-modern period offers a complementary perspective. March’s Renaissance translators and imitators carefully selected certain words for their renditions of March’s verses in view of the significance of those terms for the poetic culture of their own time.

The authors survey the development of classical literacy from the twelfth-century Aragonese royal courts until the arrival of the printing press and the dissemination of Italian Humanism. Aimed at students and scholars of medieval and early modern Iberia—and to anyone interested in medieval Romance literatures and the classical tradition—this volume also provides a concise introduction to the medieval Crown of Aragon, a catalogue of translations into Catalan of texts from the classical antiquity through the Italian Renaissance, and a critical study of the influence of the classics in five major works: Bernat Metge’s Lo somni, Joanot Martorell’s Tirant lo Blanc, the anonymous Curial e Güelfa, Ausiàs March’s poetry, and Joan Roís de Corella’s prose.
