The founding of the Romanian Free Thinkers Association (1909) prompted violent criticism against it. This arose out of a milieu influenced by the Romanian Orthodox Church targeting the Association’s anti-religious attitude. One of the allegations formulated against it was that the freethinking movement was only one facet of the wider Jewish universal conspiracy. This article aims to analyse to what extent there was a connection between the freethinking movement in Romania and the Jewish question. The main argument set forward in this article is that the Romanian freethinkers struggled to dismantle these accusations, while attempting to act towards Jewish emancipation in Romania as part of their wider program to transform society.

Abstract The development of football in interwar Romania can be noticed in many ways: the growth in the number of teams and players, the growing football audiences, the increased number of international matches played abroad and at home by the national team and also by the Romanian club teams. In this respect, it is no accident that the Romanian national football team attended all the interwar editions of the World Cup (1930, 1934, and 1938). The aim of this article is to analyse the contacts between the Romanian and English interwar football, materialized through the close season tours of several English football teams in Romania (Oxford City, 1927; Liverpool, 1936; Leicester City, 1937 and Preston North End, 1938). These tours represented a great opportunity to assess the level of Romanian football and were also a good propaganda for sport and football during those times. Likewise, these tours prepared the first international match between Romania and England, played in Bucharest in 1939. Some comparisons with similar situations of other sports practiced in interwar Romania are also invoked.

ABSTRACT The growth in interest for the historical analysis of sports in Romania has lately been focusing more on general issues or on the major sports (for instance, football). As a result, despite its early apparition in Romania (1913), and its development in comparison with other Central European countries, Rugby has been completely ignored. The aim of this article is to analyze the ways in which the development of the sport was attempted in Interwar Romania. This is a case study focused on the efforts to popularise rugby in the towns outside of Bucharest, the capital of Romania. These efforts were administered in a combination of two ways: the propaganda rugby matches in different cities and the organisation of rugby teams in provincial cities and were based more on individual actions rather than the coordinated action of the Romanian Rugby management of those times. The conclusions emphasise the minor success of this initiative, contextualising it in the rugby and sports’ condition in Interwar Romania.

The emergence and the development of deaf sports represent a neglected topic by historians. The importance of this topic consists on highlighting of the efforts for the integration of the deaf people into sports movement and society as a whole into certain period of time. The aim of this article is to take into the light the ways in which deaf sports appeared in interwar Romania and the different difficulties which this initiative encountered. In this manner, there are emphasized the creation of the ‘Deaf-and-Dumb Cultural and Sports Club’ in Bucharest (1934), the fruitless endeavors of Vasile Dimitriu-Leorda for admission of deaf football teams in the competitions organized by the Romanian Football Federation, the creation of Romania’s deaf national team (1938), and, also, Romania’s participation in the 1939 Stockholm Summer Deaflympics.
