The article compares the conditions of clitic climbing in modern and medieval Spanish. The purpose of this comparison is to prove and illustrate – using the examples of a medieval text in prose – that conditions of clitic climbing vary during the different stages of the evolution of Spanish.

Spanish and Portuguese, the two most representative Iberoromance languages, coincide in having preserved the phenomenon of clitic promotion since ancient times. According to certain theories, the realization or non-realization of the promotion depends on the structural characteristics of the constructions made up of a regent verb and a dependent infinitive. The detailed analysis of the phenomenon mentioned
above in a medieval and a modern corpus presented in this article demonstrates that, in spite of the apparent similarities, there are considerable differences between the structure of the constructions composed of a regent verb and an infinitive in the two periods.

El libro examina la promoción de clíticos en el español y el portugués en el período desde la Edad Media tardía hasta el renacimiento temprano, insertándose en una importante y fecunda tradición de investigación. El trabajo se basa en una abundante recogida de datos procedentes de las lenguas romances antiguas, que son estudiados a través de la aplicación de las argumentaciones desarrolladas por la larga tradición de estudios mencionada. Se presenta que la promoción de clíticos en las lenguas romances antiguas no es una función del estatus de perífrasis/complejo verbal de las formas verbales en las que los clíticos se apoyan, como en las lenguas modernas, sino depende de la diversa naturaleza que las construcciones subordinadas de modo no finito tenían en la fase medieval de las lenguas romances y, más generalmente, de una diversa estructura de la frase. Se asbe que todas las lenguas romances abandonarán tarde o temprano estas características para asumir su estructura moderna, muy
diferente de la antigua; el presente trabajo recoge y discute, dentro del dominio más estrecho analizado en este estudio, los primeros indicios de este gran cambio.

El artículo examina las posibles relaciones en la evolución de algunos fenómenos arcaicos de la sintaxis medieval del español en las construcciones tipo "había escito la carta", es decir, constituidas por alguna forma del auxiliar haber y un participio y un complemento directo. En el español actual tales construcciones se encuentran en un estado fuertemente gramaticalizado: el participio se mantiene siempre invariable, el auxiliar siempre lo precede y las dos formas verbales están casi siempre yuxtapuestas. En el español antiguo, sin embargo, este tipo de construcciones conservaba aún tres rasgos sintácticos heredados del latín, que indicaban una mayor variabilidad sintáctica: la posibilidad de concordar el participio con el complemento, la de anteponer el participio al auxiliar y la de separar los dos verbos de la construcción interpolando elementos entre ellos. El trabajo analiza la frecuencia de estos tres arcaísmos sintácticos en textos antiguos de diferentes períodos de la historia de la lengua para averiguar si pueden estar correlacionados entre sí.

Several researchers have called attention to the great number of Spanish vocabulary elements that appear in the Portuguese version of the medieval History of Vespasian. It narrates the destruction of Jerusalem by the Roman emperor and it was published in Lisbon in 1496 by Valentino Morávia. The presence of this vocabulary proves that the Portuguese text was translated from Spanish. Based on this assumption, in this paper we will examine, through a contrastive analysis of examples gathered from the text edited in Lisbon and the one in Seville, almost identical in content, if this influence can also be detected
at the level of grammar, especially in the field of compound tenses of transitive verbs.

The aim of this paper is to offer some new data with regard to the alternation of the agreement and the lack of agreement of the participle with the direct object in Old Catalan compound tenses (he escrita la lletra vs. he esrcrit la lletra ‘I have written a letter’). Former studies showed the total predominance of the conservative agreement in high literary language before the 16th century but no information was provided about the situation in other linguistic variants. In this article we analyse the statistical frequency of the two syntactic alternatives in mainly epistolary texts from the 15th and 16th centuries written in private and official register by authors coming from different sociolinguistic layers. In this type of texts we expected the proportion of the innovative constructions without agreement to be higher than in literary works; our data confirm the leadership of the higher social layers in spreading this innovation. We also examine those syntactic structures that could favour the appearance of the variant without agreement and its spreading to almost all contexts. At this point we observe that the position of the direct object might have an influence on the alternation of the two syntactic variants but the paper of the constructions with a masculine singular direct object also seems to be important.

Miután Wilhelm Meyer-Lübke 1925-ben megjelent munkája nyomán a tudományos közvélemény a katalánt önálló nyelvként ismerte el, meglehetősen komoly, némiképp politikai színezetű tudományos vita bontakozott ki az e nyelv úgynevezett galloromán, illetve iberoromán jellege mellett érvelő kutatók között. A különböző elméletek elsősorban olyan lexikai vizsgálatokon alapultak, amelyek a katalán szókincsnek az okcitánhoz ‒ és a franciához‒, illetve a spanyolhoz és a portugálhoz fűződő szorosabb kapcsolatát látszottak igazolni. A nyelvi rendszer más összetevőit is figyelembe véve azonban sokkal árnyaltabb kép tárul elénk, mintsem hogy a katalán hovatartozásának kérdését olyan egyértelműen el lehessen dönteni, ahogyan azt a galloromán és az iberoromán elmélet hívei szerették volna. Írásunkat ezeknek a hangtani és nyelvtani vonásoknak szenteljük.

L'objectiu d'aquest treball és examinar la falta de concordança del participi en els temps compostos dels verbs transitius en textos valencians del segle XV. La desaparició de l'esmentada concordança en el cas del català ha estat atribuïda per alguns treballs a la influència castellana, cada vegada més important des del segle XV. En aquest estudi examinem la proporció de l'alternativa sintàctica sense concordança en textos valencians, vinculats a estrats socials diferents, del segle esmentat per poder detectar quin seria el centre de la difusió del fenomen.

Resumen: El objetivo de este estudio es examinar la alternancia de auxiliares distintos-correspondientes a los latinos habere y esse-en las construcciones formadas con el participio de verbos intransitivos, que, como en otras lenguas que la conservan hasta hoy, también existió en el español antiguo. Tanto las condiciones de variación de los verbos como la cronología de su desaparición han sido abundantemente examinadas, pero los datos y las conclusiones de la bibliografía especializada son, de vez en cuando, contradictorios. En este trabajo nos proponemos analizar los datos extraídos de la versión sevillana del texto narrativo de la Historia del noble Vespasiano (1499), con el objetivo de clasificar los verbos intransitivos del español antiguo según la selección de auxiliar, prestando atención especial a aquellos que muestran alternancia aceptando ambos auxiliares.

The aim of this present article is to contribute to the study of the evolution of compound tenses in Spanish by collocating it in the Iberian Romance context. We examined whether the process of the gradual decline of the participle agreement in transitive verbs and the use of the auxiliary ‘ser’ (be) in intransitive ones show parallelisms in the three representative Romance languages of the Iberian Peninsula. The analysis of an old trilingual corpus consisting Catalan, Portuguese and Spanish texts shows that the Spanish ones, as early as the fifteenth century, show the innovation of not matching the participle and that it also maintains the use of ‘ser’ in the perfect of intransitive verbs, while the other two languages still preserve the state they had in the Middle Ages. The data indicates that the two processes are not strictly correlated and that Spanish overtook the neighboring peninsular languages only in the case of removing the concordance.
