L’histoire de la tapisserie s’est concentrée d’une part sur les grands ensembles tissés et leurs propriétaires successifs et d’autre part les lieux de production, ce qui a entrainé la création de modèles historiques impliquant une hiérarchie, une idée d’expansion, de rayonnement d’un art national, tels que la primauté des ateliers bruxellois au XVIe siècle et l’excellence de la manufacture des Gobelins au XVIIIe. Les études relatives au métier de tapissier, à la production et à l’organisation du commerce ont été délaissées, hormis au début de la IIIe République, dans un contexte favorable aux métiers et aux ouvriers (construction d’un siège des juridictions commerciales et ouvrières, création d’écoles municipales d’apprentissage et initiatives privées, construction de bourses du travail et projet d’institutions de prévoyance). L’exposition universelle de 1878 a révélé la vitalité des métiers. Le mot tapissier désigne plusieurs activités et corps de métiers : un tapissier est tantôt un ouvrier qui garnit des sièges et qui tend des tentures de toutes sortes dans les demeures, tantôt un marchand impliqué dans le négoce de tapisseries, de tapis, de textiles et de divers meubles, tantôt encore un fabricant de tapisseries et d’autres tissus d’ameublement. Ceci entraine des ambiguïtés, des confusions qu’il convient de clarifier en revenant sur la définition de ces métiers, sur leur organisation et leur production, en abordant des questions de lexicographie, de hiérarchie, d’estimation de leur importance en nombre d’ouvriers, en volume et en qualité de production.

Cette communication porte sur le Thésée vainqueur du taureau de Marathon, un tableau de Carle Vanloo exposé au Salon de 1745 ayant fait l’objet d’une importante description, longtemps introuvable, qui permet de mieux saisir les enjeux de la peinture et sa signification.

The thermal history of four quartz-rich ochre samples from an Upper Palaeolithic site was studied. This work is based on the changes in thermal activation characteristics (TAC) of the 110∘C TL peak of the quartz inclusions. An isothermal study of a previously unheated sample has highlighted the importance of the duration of annealing on the sensitization of quartz. In fact, the sensitivity change as a function of the duration of annealing is not monotonic. For that reason it seems necessary to consider the “equivalent thermal history” HEHE rather than an “equivalent temperature”. Isochronal annealing experiments demonstrate that the initial rise of sensitization overestimates the true HEHE by about 100∘C. Using a geological sample we have thus developed an empirical approach which allows the true HEHE of artifacts to be determined. Reheating of ochre originally heated in antiquity results in desensitization of the TAC.

A multidisciplinary study of the Roc de Marsal Cave gave us the opportunity to re-examine the known problem posed by U-series disequilibria in sediments in the field of palaeodosimetric dating. Apart from burnt flints and heated limestones, the material being dated, THAT IS our principal concern here, is made of burnt sediment samples collected from a reddish layer that forms the very base of the Roc de Marsal Mousterian sequence (Couche B). U-series disequilibria of long life nuclides in sediments were observed: as a general trend, the activity of 238U is greater than that of 226Ra. Important discrepancies in age determination can occur according to the origin of the disequilibrium and its kinetics. To characterise these ancient modifications of radioactivity and constrain the range of possible variations of annual doses, a statistical study of 238U, 226Ra and 232Th activities, measured by gamma spectrometry, was carried out. It shows that the sediment was mainly enriched in mobile uranium. This conclusion is in accordance with the results of complementary measurements of 230Th and 234U performed by alpha spectrometry. On the kinetics side, two models of time-variation of U and daughter concentrations are compared, taking experimental data into account. A detailed presentation of the methodology and the method of calculation of dose rates, and particularly time-averaged dose rates in such a situation, is given.
