With a second 9-1-1 spinoff currently in development at ABC, the hunt is on for TV’s next great captain. And if you ask us, there’s only one man for the job.
We here at TVLine have a history of predicting these things. Eight years ago, we cast Tyler Hoechlin as Superman nearly two full weeks before The CW did. More recently, we predicted that ABC would green-light a third 9-1-1 once Fox pulled the plug on Lone Star — and lo and behold, just 27 hours later, Ryan Murphy made it official.
That’s why I feel incredibly confident in this next prediction: John Stamos will headline the next installment in the first-responders franchise.
Think about it: When the Powers That Be sought a leading man for Lone Star, they approached Rob Lowe — a former teen heartthrob whose career has stretched five decades, and whose fame has spanned multiple generations. He’s a household name. Our pick to lead 9-1-1: Hawai’i… or 9-1-1: Sin City… or 9-1-1: Boise (God forbid!) has also been a pop culture mainstay ever since he got his start as Blackie Parrish on another ABC show, General Hospital, in 1982. And his history with the network extends to his most iconic role of all, that of motorcycle-riding, guitar-playing, hair-obsessed Uncle Jesse on the TGIF classic, Full House.
Also of note: Stamos has an established relationship with 9-1-1 co-creator Murphy. Over the past 15 years, he has appeared on not one… not two… not three… but four Murphy productions — Glee, The New Normal, Scream Queens and, earlier this month, Doctor Odyssey. His impressive résumé also includes a four-season stint as paramedic-turned-emergency room doc Tony Gates on NBC’s ER — ergo, station chief isn’t much of a stretch.
Stamos comes with a built-in audience, and he’s simply too charismatic an actor to remain a free agent for too long. He has both the gravitas to play a mentor (not unlike Captains Bobby Nash and Owen Strand) and the charm to handle potential romantic storylines.
Quite frankly, we can think of no better fit for the 9-1-1 franchise than Stamos in a fireman’s uniform.
Do you agree with our pick? Or is there someone else you’d like to see star in next season’s 9-1-1 offshoot? Leave a comment with your casting suggestions… and they might just wind up in a future TVLine column.
No
I vote for Dennis Haysbert to lead a new 911!
YAS
Always been a fan. I think he’d do great
Well, he went from playing the President on “24”, to playing my Dad on “Lucifer”. So wouldn’t playing a captain of a fire house be a bit of a demotion for him?
I could live with John Stamos on my screen every week!
I feel that the character Howard Han (Howie) has a better commanding lead actor ability. He’s always convincing and never falls out of character. The writers also didn’t do a 360 degree flip flop with his original character roll. 911 is a very good series.
Of course Stamos would fit in any lead actor position.
I think John would be perfect for it. He can do drama and he’s funny at the same time. He has a great sense of humor so as captain he’d be both productive and entertaining.
Oh no please don’t start with that drama queen..he has one talent ..smiling like the joker…please find a talented actor ..fresh and maybe a female lead! There are female captains, you know.
He was lovely as Blackie on general hospital — all he did was cry — I loved him
I remember coming home from afternoon kindergarten class and watching the last half hour of GH, which my mom was watching, and liking the character Blackie in his black leather jacket and blue jeans. So Mr Stamos has been in my life since I was 5 yrs old. I’m 51 now. I’m sure if he gets the job I’ll probably watch it.
So…no one is allowed to like John Stamos because YOU don’t like him? You think far too highly of yourself!
having Stamos lead the show would bring about the same exact problem that happened with Lonestar, it wouldn’t be a 911 spin-off it would be The John Stamos Show just like Lonestar turned into The Rob Lowe Show and ruined it.
That was my first thought too; not sure about ruining it, but definitely being a bit too similar to Rob Lowe’s Owen…Just imagine uncle Jesse as a first responder 🤭
I never watched Full House. Uncle Jesse to me was an old man in Hazard County. 🤪
Hey don’t be dissing Boise 🤨🙂
I am in Boise and I agree!!
I do not agree with John Stamos, to be a chief, he does not suit a 911 spin off series. In my opinion, I would say, Ryan Eggold (aka Max) or Eamonn Walker (aka Boden). They are both wonderful actors and should definitely have their own series. ❤️😘😍❤️😘😍
I hope you’re right! I believe John Stamos would be great and is highly underrated as an actor.
No, thank you.
I’ll be happy as long as it’s set in Vegas or really anywhere other than Chicago, New York or Hawaii
I would like to see Minneapolis or Omaha….Midwest gets tornadoes, ice, hail, snow, flooding, etc. but yes Chicago is overdone, so one of the other cities.
Maybe not for leading actor, but if the original show isn’t going to have Tommy and Buck get back together, I think Tommy should move to a new city and join the new crew! Especially if it’s Hawaii – it seems very useful to have a pilot on your team if you’re living in the islands!
John Stamose thinks it’s a funny story to tell that he helped his friend rape a fan
“Quite frankly, we can think of no better fit for the 9-1-1 franchise than Stamos in a fireman’s uniform.”
Really? No one better?
How about a person of color or a woman? D.B. Woodside, Mike Colter, Esai Morales, James Roday Rodriguez, Jay Hernandez, Katheryn Winnick, Cobie Smulders or Rosario Dawson? There are a lot of qualified actors that fit the bill, you just have to think outside the box.
I’d love to see James tackle another dramatic role!
I could happily live with never seeing John Stamos in another show. I have heard too many stories about him being an unkind, egotistical jerk to people who have met him. Plenty of other deserving, good actors out there. Because honestly, Stamos can’t really act.
So, you don’t think it is going to be 9-1-1 Texas – centered in El Paso?
Hope not. If so so long 911
Ha! Actually El Paso is a quiet (boring) and uneventful town.
ABSOLUTILY NOT hes vile and a crappy actor i woukd avoid a spin off with that creep at all costs
i mean unles hed like to support another friend with cancer by wearing a bald cap again coz that was a real classy thing to do, complete tool
Jonathan Groff
Steven Pasquale
Will Chase
Dylan McDermott
Cheyenne Jackson
Cheyenne Jackson yes
Yeah. How about just keeping LoneStar and going with that.
Why are they dumping Lonestar and creating a new spin-off at all?
Because ratings are bad and Fox doesn’t want to keep that.
FOX is dumping all of its scripted shows. They are making it a cheap reality program network. Their fines from their lying news disaster of a channel is pulling the whole corporation down. And more lawsuits are coming that are expected to finish draining their coffers. FOX will soon be the fifth or sixth major network once again.
Amen!
Stamos is a perfect pick but who will stand with as crew
I don’t really mind, however it would be nice if they didn’t make every story about him like they did with Rob Lowe’s character. I stopped watching that show because of it.
Stamos, NO, He’s just not the right look or whatever for a fireman.
I would very much like to see Ryan Eggold as a fire captain, I think he
would be very good in that role. Dennis Haysbert, also would be a really
good person as a fire captain. Anyone else?
I was so excited as I started reading that you were going to suggest a new lead role for TYLER HOECHLIN which would be genius!!! He is so talented, he can be intensely serious, sensitive and romantic, and funny. Give him some consideration please.
As an Idahoan, I’m offended by your comment. Isn’t Hawaii and Las Vegas overplayed? Wouldn’t be nice to see other places? One of the things I liked about Lone Star was that it wasn’t set in New York or Los Angeles or Chicago. It’s nice to see other parts of the world.
Lonestar is not actually filmed in Austin though… 🤔
99% of scripted shows are not filmed in whatever town they are set in.
