The concept of charity in Russian history is considered, along with the legislation of the XV - XXI centuries and corresponding social practices. The relations between government, church, and social forms of charity are also analyzed.

Рассматривается понятие благотворительности в российской традиции, а также законодательные акты XV - XXI веков и соответствующие им социальные практики в темпоральном измерении. Также проведен анализ соотношения государственных, церковных и общественных форм призрения.

The article examines the practice of orphan children’s placement in pre-revolutionary Russia. It considers the activities of major organizations such as the Department of Institutions of Empress Maria and the Imperial Philanthropic Society. The article compares the methods and results of the work of these institutions.
The placement and care of orphans has been one of the key issues in social policy in the Russian state for almost three hundred years. But today the problem is still acute. Some of the causes of orphanhood have persisted independently of socioeconomic, political, and ethical eras.
The article discusses the evolution of the practices of the placement of orphans in pre-revolutionary Russia by two major pro-government charitable institutions - the Department of Institutions of Empress Maria and the Imperial Philanthropic Society. In pre-revolutionary Russia, there was a wide range of methods for the placement of orphans, from adoption and guardianship to training for any profession and assignment to a specific class (based on the child's knowledge, abilities and skills). The use of marriage as a form of placement is also considered.
The article points out the problems that occurred during the development of the institution of orphans’ placement. These represented in most cases the elementary shortage of funds and the neglect of duties by some officials. They were associated with the weakening of the control of the central oversight authorities in the institutions concerned. The application of supervisory measures fluctuated: it weakened, then sharply increased (in the opinion of analysts of the time).
Thus, the article examines the main forms of orphans’ placement and care practiced in the Department of Institutions of Empress Maria and by the Imperial Philanthropic Society.

Исследуются практики жизнеустройства детей-сирот в дореволюционной России. Рассматривается деятельность таких крупных организаций, как Ведомство учреждений императрицы Марии и Императорское Человеколюбивое общество. Сравниваются методы и результаты работы данных учреждений.

The article analyzes charity as a tool for the social welfare of the population of modern Russia, and as a sociocultural phenomenon. The study of works of Russian authors shows the selective character of interest in this phenomenon, namely preferential attention to the origins of the charity and its practical significance. It is argued that the analysis of the motivation for charity has not yet become the subject of attention of Russian researchers, which does not allow to fully identify the essential aspects of charitable activity, as well as create a holistic view of it in order to use the results in both the scientific and practical fields. It is grounded in the urgency of studying the motives for charitable activities, their analysis, and the determination of the motivational field of philanthropy.

Предпринят анализ благотворительности как инструмента обеспечения социального благополучия населения современной России и как социокультурного явления. На основе работ российских авторов показан избирательный интерес к данному феномену, а именно преимущественное внимание к истокам благотворительности и ее практической значимости. Утверждается, что анализ мотивации к благотворительности еще не стал предметом пристального внимания отечественных исследователей, что не позволяет в полной мере выявить сущностные аспекты благотворительной деятельности, а также составить целостное представление о ней с целью применения полученных результатов как в научной, так и в практической сфере. Обосновывается актуальность изучения мотивов благотворительной деятельности, их анализа и определения мотивационного поля благотворительности.
