Objective: To assess the usefulness of acoustic analysis of voice in patients undergoing microiaryngeal surgery at R.G Kar Medical College and to support the current practice of subjective voice evaluation in such patients. Methods: A prospective observational study was carried out at R.G. Kar Medical College involving 17 patients undergoing microiaryngeal surgery for benign vocal cord lesions in the department of Otorhinolaryngology. Using Dr. Speech software, pre-operative and 6 weeks post-operative acoustic analysis of voice of each patient was done and the data thus collected was statistically analysed and evaluated. Results: Astatistical significant change occurs in the basic voice parameters postoperatively.Meanfundamental frequecy changed from 226.40 to 198.60, mean standard deviation of fundamental frequency changed from 3.18 to 2.50, mean jitter from 0.56 to 0.37, mean shimmer from 4.43 to 3.00, Singnal to noise ratio (SNR) from 16.48 to 20.98 and Harmonic to noise ratio (H...

Introduction Mastoid operations have been in practice for over four centuries for suppurative conditions of the ear. Intact canal wall mastoidectomy has the advantage of better functional results while canal wall down mastoidectomy offers excellent exposure for disease eradication and post operative monitoring but is associated with significant cavity problems. In order to overcome the problems associated with canal wall down procedure while retaining its advantages the concept of mastoid cavity obliteration was introduced. This study analysed the outcomes of mastoid cavity obliteration and to assess the outcomes of mastoid cavity obliteration with autologous adipose tissue. Materials and Methods A prospective, experimental, randomized study was conducted over a period of 18 months among patients presenting with active squamous variety of Chronic Otitis Media. The patients were randomly allocated to two groups, A and B. Both groups underwent canal wall down Mastoidectomy followed by...

Introduction The aetiology of maxillofacial fractures is greatly influenced by geographic location, socioeconomic status of the cohort, and the period of investigation. The aim of this study is to analyze and identify characteristics of maxillo-facial fractures that took place in and around Midnapore- Kharagpore city of West Bengal and who presented to a peripheral medical college hospital during a period of 1 year. Materials and Methods    A detailed database analysis was performed based on data collected from the patients of Road Traffic Accidents (RTA) with sustained facial trauma admitted to General Surgery and Otorhinolaryngology ward of a peripheral medical college hospital. Detailed clinical examination as well as radiological data was collected. Results The highest frequency of maxillo-facial injury due to RTA was among the young adults 18-40 years. Most common type of injury encountered is abrasion (44%) followed by bruise and closed fracture. Mandible is the most common bo...

Introduction Osteoma of the mastoid region is an uncommon benign tumor of bone. Osteomas may occur in the external auditory canals but are reported to be very rare in the mastoid region, with about 150 cases reported in literature. Case Report A 20-year-old man presented with painless lump behind the right ear since last 2 years. On examination a 3x3 cm tumour was present in the right post-auricular region. HRCT scan showing hyper-attenuating area close to the right mastoid cortex, measuring approximately 3x3cm, spherical, with cleavage areas between the tumour and the mastoid external cortex. Surgical excision was performed on cosmetic grounds. Postoperative period was uneventful. Discussion Osteoma over the mastoid region is rare and mainly asymptomatic with excellent prognosis after complete removal of the lesion.

Introduction The complaint of nasal obstruction or difficulty in nasal breathing is highly subjective. Benefits of Septoplasty, as perceived by the patient, also varies widely with subjective satisfaction ranging from complete alleviation of symptoms to a total failure. Materials and Methods Fifty three patients above 18 years of age, with anatomical deviation of the nasal septum as the sole cause of obstruction and symptoms persisting for more than 3 months, underwent septoplasty. Nasal endoscopy was done for Mladina typing of the nasal septal deviation. Pre and post operative NOSE (Nasal Obstruction & Symptom Evaluation) score were analysed. Results Mean preoperative NOSE score was 11.98 ±1.23. On the 6th and 12th postoperative week follow up NOSE score was 3.13±1.30 & 1.05±0.87 respectively with p value <0.05.  Conclusion Mladina typing along with NOSE score will help in letting the patient know about his or her expected outcome following septoplasty.

Introduction Oral steroids currently represent the standard treatment for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of intratympanic dexamethasone injection for treating ‘Idiopathic sudden sensori-neural hearing loss’ (ISSNHL) not improved with conventional oral steroid. Materials and Methods A prospective study was conducted on 30 patients refractory to oral steroid therapy between June 2017 to May 2018. ‘Intratympanic dexamethasone injection’ (ITDI) was given every week for 3 consecutive weeks. Hearing was assessed by performing pure tone audiogram before every ITDI and also 1 week after the completion of treatment. Results Hearing improvement was found in 19 out of the 30 cases (63.3%).   Conclusions Intratympanic dexamethasone significantly improves the prognosis of ISSNHL and is a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment.

Introduction: This present study is an attempt to study the demographic characteristics of individuals presenting with hearing loss in a peripheral tertiary care hospital using the available database of pure tone audiometry results. Materials and methods: A retrospective, observational, descriptive study was conducted over a period of 5 years in the Department of ENT of a peripheral tertiary care hospital wherein all subjects having a pure tone audiometry were included in the study. The records of PTA done were analyzed followed by systematic analysis. Results: A total of 9790 individuals inclusive of 5566 males and 4224 females were studied. Maximum no of individuals belonged to the age group of 21-30 years. Nearly 63% of total subjects suffered from Bilateral hearing loss. Sensorineural hearing loss was most prevalent type of loss. Mild degree of loss was most prevalent. Adolescents and young adults comprised the bulk of the study population. Sensorineural hearing is the most comm...

Improper patient selection for septal surgery often has been found to result in therapeutic failure, and there needs to be an objective assessment of nasal obstruction before the surgery and for postoperative follow-up that can be applied in the routine otolaryngology practice. The purpose of this study is to assess the usefulness of a cost-effective device for objective measurement of the nasal airway partitioning in selecting patients for septal surgery and for postoperative outcome evaluation. A hospital-based, prospective, observational study was carried out in a tertiary-care teaching institution involving 74 patients waiting for septal surgery. Each patient was exposed to subjective assessment of nasal obstruction by the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) scale and objective measurement by Nasal Partitioning Ratio (NPR) using a new device, Nasal Airway Partition Meter (NAPM), once before and twice after surgery. Overall, average NOSE score and NPR values were 66.42 ± ...

Nasopharynx is an exceptionally rare anatomical location for foreign body impaction. We present a unique case of foreign body made of porcelain lodged in the nasopharynx of a one and a half year old child for more than a month. The foreign body had been introduced perorally and had subsequently got impacted in the nasopharynx following amateur digital manipulation. Presence of porcelain foreign body in the nasopharynx has never been reported before. Removal of the foreign body was performed under general anesthesia. This rare situation is potentially dangerous, since its dislodgment may cause fatal airway obstruction. Therefore, in all cases with missing foreign bodies in the aerodigestive system, nasopharyngeal impaction should be kept in mind and examination of the region should be considered. An unusual case of a large piece of terracotta accidentally lodged in the neck and subsequently removed by operation 2 years later is reported. The novelty of this case lies in the facts that 1) a large terracotta foreign body lodged in the neck almost unnoticed for more than 2 years 2) route of entry of the foreign body to neck tissues was not by the more common route of perforation of aero-digestive tract from inside but piercing the neck from outside 3) the 2.5 cm object migrated to another site from apparent site of entry and 4) it was asymptomatic for 2 years despite being close to vital structures other than an inconspicuous cosmetic deformity.
