The article also shows the limits of the Communist Party’ s control over history writing and the hardships of accommodating contradictory interpretations of history within a multinational communist state.

In Kazakhstan there is a similar tendency. The paper claims that this rehabilitation has a baseless argument. The second issue is how Soviet rulers mobilized Kazakh population during the World War II (1941-1945).

Whilst civil wars and inter-ethnic conflicts razed neighboring regions and countries to the ground, Georgian–Azerbaijani bilateral relations, unusually, remained harmonious during these countries’ short independence. What were the reasons for this unexpected peace? Using archival evidence from Azerbaijan and Georgia, the article demonstrates how the complementary economic and political relations of the two countries during this turbulent period outweighed the option of war. This historical narrative also helps us to explain the contemporary relations in the region.

National Identities in Soviet Historiography, 2015

The territory of contemporary Ukraine has a multi-ethnic past (the Iranic Scythians, ancient Greeks, Germanic tribes, Finno-Ugric populations, the Jews, multiple Uralo-Altaic tribes, the Western Slavs - Poles). Next to the especially large Russian population, up until 1945, there were also historical Polish, Jewish, and German populations. The modern nation could have been constructed around a territorial definition. After all, Ukraine has never been an ethno-toponym referring to a particular race or ethnicity. However, when the Soviet Ukrainian historians started the construction of modern Ukrainian national identity in the 1930s, they preferred a mono-ethnic definition of Ukrainianness. The reason behind this choice was the German orientalisation of Slavs since the 19th century. The Soviet mono-ethnic definition of Ukrainianness was a direct reply to the German thesis of 'inferior asiatic Slavs'. Before the Soviets, M. Hrushevs'kyi also fought against this German orientalism and promoted a mono-ethnic origin. In that sense, the Soviet Ukrainian nation-building overlapped with the earlier construction by M. Hrushevs'kyi and has an enduring legacy.
