The paper responds to research problems related to the implementation of large-scale investment p... more The paper responds to research problems related to the implementation of large-scale investment projects in waterways in Europe. As part of design and construction works, it is necessary to indicate river ports that play a major role within the European transport network as intermodal nodes. This entails a number of challenges, the cardinal one being the optimal selection of port locations, taking into account the new transport, economic, and geopolitical situation that will be brought about by modernized waterways. The aim of the paper was to present an original methodology for determining port locations for modernized waterways based on non-cost criteria, as an extended multicriteria decision-making method (MCDM) and employing GIS (Geographic Information System)-based tools for spatial analysis. The methodology was designed to be applicable to the varying conditions of a river's hydroengineering structures (free-flowing river, canalized river, and canals) and adjustable to the requirements posed by intermodal supply chains. The method was applied to study the Odra River Waterway, which allowed the formulation of recommendations regarding the application of the method in the case of different river sections at every stage of the research process.

This research responds to the needs of the shipping industry seeking optimal processes and mechan... more This research responds to the needs of the shipping industry seeking optimal processes and mechanisms for successful innovation. The study aims at identifying the key factors underlying successful adoption of technological innovations in sea shipping, broken down into three critical research areas: technology readiness, social acceptance, and technology implementation process. The findings have been obtained using a mix-method approach combining patent analysis, survey analysis, structured interviews, and R&D projects analysis. The results indicate that the maritime transport lags behind other industries in terms of developing and implementing new technologies, and relies on technologies which have been tested and adopted in other market segments. The research has proven that the social groups most affected by the implementation of innovative marine technologies are highly enthusiastic about them. The key success factors include compliance of the innovation with future legal requirements and involvement of maritime carriers or sea transport operators in the implementation process.

The aim of the article is to present the results of research location problem of a distribution c... more The aim of the article is to present the results of research location problem of a distribution centre serving a network of discount stores. The proposed method identifies the best location of the distribution centre for the dynamically growing number of retail stores in the high population variability region, and takes into account the key factors affecting the efficiency of the distribution network, i.e. the average delivery distance and time of the distribution process. The method is developing existing multi-criteria analysis methods incorporating non-economic factors. The four basic areas of the analysis include: catchment area, demographic issues, transport infrastructure and economic efficiency. The methodology makes use of up-to-date IT tools for statistical and spatial analysis. The method correctness was tested on the network of existing discount stores in the Pomerania Region in Poland. The cargo distribution is very important for the efficiency of the whole supply chain, especially when the deliveries are spatially dispersed. Such a delivery scheme is used within every supply chain that serves discount stores' networks, with hundreds of stores (also known as supermarkets) located in residential areas, close to thousands of individual customers. The most popular discount stores' networks in Europe are: Aldi, Lidl, Netto, Kaufland and Penny. There is strong competition in this market, and in addition to continental networks, strong national networks are formed, exemplified by the Biedronka supermarkets network in Poland. The common business model of discount stores' networks is based on three main pillars: unified stores located close to the end consumers, a large selection of fresh food products supplemented with seasonal manufactured goods and competitive prices compared to stores outside the network. Benefits of scale are achieved thanks to a large volume of sales, which allows to obtain low unit costs while maintaining the acceptable quality of goods for end customers in the entire network. In order to implement such a sales strategy, it is necessary to have an effective distribution network, ensuring daily deliveries, which dynamically adapts to the current needs of the market being serviced. Distribution process within a discount stores' network takes place using distribution centres, and their number and location should be adjusted to the number and area density of the stores they service. The concept of distribution centres is semantically connected with the concept of logistic centres. However, the latter concept should be treated as a much wider one. Comparative research on the definition of logistic centres, explains that logistic centre is a territory of concentration of activities related to transportation, logistics and product distribution (Meidute, 2005). An essential element of the infrastructure of logistic centres seems to be intermodal terminal, constituting the node where the transhipment of goods from one mode to the other takes place (Tsamboulas, 2003). Logistics centre is the main element of regional and international macrologistic systems joining the whole movement of cargo streams by a logistics chain (Prokofveja, 2003). The same author adds that logistic centres are functioning as contact point of different transportation types where the distribution of cargo streams is concentrated and performed. Based on the above definitions, it can be assumed that each logistics centre performs distribution functions, but unlike the distribution centre, cargo is handled with the use of intermodal terminal and a number of additional value-added services are offered: storage, sorting, repacking , labelling etc. (Krzyżanowski, 2000). In the case of the distribution network of discount stores, in most cases we deal only with small distribution centres dedicated to one logistic operator and the cargoes are transported almost exclusively by road. Already developed models, described in the scientific literature and used in practice are discussed and their relevance to various scientific phenomena and relationships assessed. The authors point out the limitations of these models and submit the requirements that should be met in order to create effective decision-making tools. The models should provide support to achieve the research objectives for which they were developed (the observation of phenomena, the influence of different factors on the analysed phenomena, streamlining the decision-making process, optimal solution choice).

This paper presents a possible application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) in a multi-cri... more This paper presents a possible application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) in a multi-criteria analysis of components importance to a system reliability structure illustrated by a stern tube sealing system installed on deep sea ships. We used the AHP to determine the relevance of the importance ranks and made an importance analysis for the criteria of reliability, safety and repair costs. We compared our results with the measures analysed and presented in literature before. We also presented some conclusions on using the AHP for multi-criteria analysis of components importance in Complex Technical Systems (CTS). We finished with suggestions for further research on quantitative and qualitative methods of importance analysis. Sažetak U radu je predstavljena moguća primjena AHP (analitičkog hijerarhijskog procesuiranja) u multikriterijskoj analizi značajnosti komponenti za strukturu pouzdanosti sustava, koja je prikazana na primjeru sustava brtvljenja statvene cijevi ugrađene na prekooceanske brodove. Koristio se AHP kako bi se odredila relevantnost razine značajnosti te je analizirana značajnost za kriterije pouzdanosti, sigurnosti i troškove popravaka. Rezultati su uspoređeni s vrijednostima mjerenja koje su analizirane i prikazane u ranijoj literaturi. Također su izneseni zaključci o upotrebi AHP-a za multikriterijsku analizu značajnosti komponenti u kompleksnim tehničkim sustavima (CTS). Na kraju rada dane su implikacije za daljnja kvantitativna i kvalitativna istraživanja analize značajnosti.

The research was conducted for the Port of Szczecin with regard to the planned extension of the container terminal. The research included technical and operational as well as environmental and economic criteria for three investment options developed by the authors. Investment solutions are intended to provide efficient unitized cargo handling to and from the port within the agglomeration area, which entails its integration with the specific urban traffic. The research findings will result in putting forward recommendations for large port cities transport infrastructure development strategies corresponding with the priorities of sustainable transport.

Among the factors determining the transport system the key factors of the intermodal transport development in the Central and Eastern Europe were selected. The analysis included: intermodal transport units (ITU), means of transport and transhipment technologies, as well as organization conditions of intermodal connections. In addition, the costs structure of the intermodal delivery was analysed and its impact on the profitability of the whole supply chain. Observations have led to a number of detailed reflections and those are the basis of the following conclusions and recommendations of a general nature related to the region of the Central and Eastern Europe. Sažetak Rad se bavi problemom učinkovitosti intermodalnog transportnog sustava. Među čimbenicima koji određuju transportni sustav odabrani su ključni čimbenici razvoja intermodalnog transporta u Srednjoj i Istočnoj Europi. Analiza je uključila intermodalne transportne jedinice (ITU), tehnologije transporta i pretovara, kao i uvjete organizacije intermodalnih veza. Osim toga, analizirana je struktura troškova intermodalne isporuke, kao i njihov utjecaj na profitabilnost cijelog lanca opskrbe. Promatranja su dovela do brojnih detaljnih razmišljanja te do sljedećih općih zaključaka i preporuka koji se odnose na Srednju i Istočnu Europu.

The paper presents an improved methodology of analysing the qualitative importance of components ... more The paper presents an improved methodology of analysing the qualitative importance of components in the functional and reliability structures of the system. We present basic importance measures, i.e. the Birnbaum's structural measure, the order of the smallest minimal cut-set, the repetition count of an i-th event in the Fault Tree and the streams measure. A subsystem of circulation pumps and fuel heaters in the main engine fuel supply system of a container vessel illustrates the qualitative importance analysis. We constructed a functional model and a Fault Tree which we analysed using qualitative measures. Additionally, we compared the calculated measures and introduced corrected measures as a tool for improving the analysis. We proposed scaled measures and a common measure taking into account the location of the component in the reliability and functional structures. Finally, we proposed an area where the measures could be applied .
