Prior to the pandemic, the web-based digital audio workstation Soundtrap emerged as a leading platform for creating music online. The present study examined the growth of Soundtrap’s usage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using machine-learning methods, we analyzed anonymized user data from Soundtrap’s 1.6 million educational users in the United States to see if the pandemic affected Soundtrap’s education user base and, if so, to what extent. An exploratory data analysis demonstrated a large increase in Soundtrap’s user base beyond five standard deviations beginning in March 2020. A subsequent changepoint analysis identified March 17, 2020, as the day this shift occurred. Finally, we created a SARIMAX model using data prior to March 17 to forecast expected growth. This model was unable to account for user growth after March 17, showing highly anomalous growth rates outside of the model’s confidence ...

In addition, there was an attempt to determine if there was a difference in response between musicians (music therapy majors) and non-musicians (psychology majors). The participants (N = 44) were undergraduate students enrolled at two private comprehensive universities in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Data was collected via the Continuous Response Digital Interface (CRDI). Prior to the listening experience, half the participants from both musicians (n = 22) and non-musicians (n=22) groups read an instruction sheet describing the musical style, historical background, and cultural context of the musical selections. The remaining participants in both groups received no instruction prior to their listening session. Results indicated that instruction had a statistically significant effect on musicians' aesthetic response to the African and Brazi...

All subjects listened to the same rendition of Puccini's La Boheme, Act I and completed a similar exit questionnaire that asked them to report their "aesthetic responsiveness." In previous studies it was conjectured that an important variable relating to attentiveness and subsequent aesthetic response might be increased attention necessitated by having to manipulate a CRDI dial throughout this 20-minute excerpt. The present investigation attempted to answer this question by having different groups of subjects listen with and without CRDI dial manipulation. Results of the study indicated that there was a significant difference between the aesthetic responses of subjects who manipulated the dial ve...

Situated within a clinical environment, this study examines how PMTs engage with a concerned mother whose daughter did not have a successful audition for a school musical. We approach this inquiry from a unique perspective, drawing on a pedagogy comprehensively used to prepare physicians, and using it with our own PMTs. We begin by outlining medical education’s use of simulations with standardized patients to prepare future medical professionals to effectively engage with patients. Then, we turn attention to the music simulation designed for our PMTs, the challenges they all faced from the same concerned mother, and the data resulting from their face-to-face conversations. Implications center on the use of clinical simulations as a pedagogy to enhance music teacher preparation.
