This study examined factors that predict interpersonal trust on three continents. Path analyses indicated that interpersonal trust was predicted by perceptions of social cohesion, competition for scarce resources, and one or more of the following individual values or traits: Independence, interdependence, uncertainty avoidance, and optimism/pessimism. Results suggest that perceptions of societal level variables are associated with individual values and traits and these, in turn, are related to interpersonal trust.
