The aim of the paper is to represent some specific speech features of the local media from southwestern part of Bulgaria – the newspapers Struma and Vyara, the radios Radio Blagoevgrad, radio Focus Pirin, Darik radio – Blagoevgrad; the TV channels TV OKO, TV DARTS, BNT Pirin/BNT 2. The speech characteristics are a result of parallel processes of democratization and intellectualization as well as dynamic changes in the media.

This pilot study compares and analyzes the acoustic characteristics of soft bilabial plosives in the speech of representatives of Eastern and Western Bulgarian dialects. Six acoustic parameters follow the CVC syllable structure. The results show that there is a notable difference in the consonant duration and the F 2 transition duration between the Eastern and Western types of articulation. The paper confirms that consonant duration, F 2 onset, F 2 offset and F 2 transition duration are informative enough to differentiate between Eastern and Western types of soft consonants on the one hand, and soft consonants and non-palatalized consonants on the other hand.

В това пилотно изследване се анализират избрани акустични характеристики (дължина на съгласната, дължина на формантния преход на втория формант, начало и край, измерени в Hz, на втория и третия формантен преход) на меките веларни съгласни при артикулация от източнобългарски и западнобългарски тип в рамките на изолирани срички от типа CVC. Представени са и акустичните характеристики на твърдите веларни преградни съгласни, както и на г и к пред предния вокал е, тъй като в българската фонетична литература е прието, че пред предни вокали веларните консонанти се реализират като алофони, които в артикулационно и акустично отношение в голяма степен са еквиваленти на меките преградни веларни обструенти г' и к'. Сравнението се извършва, за да се установи степента на диференциация между източно-и западнобългарския тип артикулация. Резултатите показаха, че параметърът дължина на формантния преход на втория формант е диференциращ за двата типа артикулация, както и за твърдите и меките веларни експлозиви. Дължината на съгласната трудно би могла да се определи като диференциращ фактор за двата типа артикулация, но е релевантна при диференциацията на корелатите по признака звучност-беззвучност. Също така резултатите показват, че видът на прехода на третия формант може да се приеме като диференциращ признак между изследваните меки и твърди консонанти. This pilot study discusses the results of the measurement of the acoustic properties of the soft velar plosives [gj] [kj] of the eastern Bulgarian and the western Bulgarian types of articulation in CVC isolated syllables in comparison with the properties of the hard velar plosives [g] and [k] before the vowel [a] and the front vowel [ɛ]. According to the Bulgarian phonetic literature velar consonants preceding front vowels are realized as allophones of the hard consonants, whose articulation and acoustic features are very similar to those of their soft correlates. For the purposes of this study, we chose several acoustic parameters – con-sonant duration, formant transition duration (F2), F2 onset and F2 offset (Hz), F3 onset and F3 offset (Hz) – and measured them with the Praat software. The main goal is to establish the degree of differentiation between the eastern Bulgarian and the western Bulgarian ar-ticulation with respect to velar plosives. The results show that the F2 transition duration is a distinctive feature that sets apart the eastern and the western types of articulation, as well as hard and soft velar plosives. The type of F3 transition can also be considered as a differren-tiator between soft and hard velar plosives. The consonant duration could hardly serve to dis-tinguish between the two types of articulation but is relevant for the differentiation of voiced vs. voiceless plosives.
