Win 7 used to let you drag files from jump lists anywhere you wanted, such as to an email. MS in their wisdom removed that feature from win10/11. The beauty of the old approach was that you didn't need to go find the exact file; finding it in the jump list was sufficient. You can find the file, right click, and select Send To, but that is less convenient than going to the jump list.

The current jump list does have a share feature but the only email client in that lists of shareables is Outlook. I asked ChatGPT about adding TBird to the list and it said it can't be done unless Mozilla implements the Share Target API.

Is that worth submitting as a feature request or is it am impossibility?

I have problems migrating my Windows 10 Thunderbird profile to a new computer running Linux.

On the new computer, I want to put the profile into a custom folder, not the standard folder (which would be /home/torben/.var/app/net.thunderbird.Thunderbird/.thunderbird in my case)

Here's what I did:

I installed Thunderbird 128.13.0esr under Fedora Linux 42 using flatpak.

Upon first startup, I aborted the mail account setup process

Opened Help/Troubleshooting information ... about:profiles

Create new profile ... Choose folder (I am translating everything from my German language version)

--> That's where an error message occurs: "/home/torben/.thunderbird not found ..." (interestingly, this folder simply does not exist (yes, I know how to view hidden files) although about:profiles also says that the "root folder" of the two already existing profiles default and default-esr is inside /home/torben/.thunderbird !?)

Nevertheless, in the profile assistant I can choose the folder (/home/torben/Dokumente/Gemeinsam/Documents/Briefe/Thunderbird_Profiles/tj63nudj.default) containing my migrated profile

The profile assistant tells me that my personal settings and data will be saved in /run/user/1000/doc/e9915464/tj63nudj.default (?)

After finishing the profile assistant, I can see the newly created profile in about:profiles, but it says "This profile is currently used by another application and therefore cannot be deleted" (what other application?)

I click "normal re-start" in the upper right corner of the about:profiles tab

After restarting, I open the about:profiles tab again. Now I can click on "run profile" under my newly created profile and Thunderbird opens a new window where everything works fine: All the migrated mails are there, I can log into my usual imap accounts etc.

I can close both windows, restart Thunderbird again and again and everything stays fine

BUT after some time (about 10 minutes) Thunderbird won't (re)start anymore and displays this error:

"Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To use Thunderbird, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, restart your device, or use a different profile."

The error persists after rebooting.

This error seems to be related to that whole manual migration process, because when I simply follow that mail account setup assistant after a clean re-install of Thunderbird, I can keep using the program without any issues (although the /home/torben/.thunderbird folder isn't created either) ...

Would be very grateful if someone had an idea how to solve this problem ... Thanks in advance!

Hi all,

in my calendar, I have an appointment which was set when the person was in Cape Verde, and the time zone there was set to Atlantic/Cape_Verde.

Now, Thunderbird obviously doesn't know about that time zone, it's also not available in the picker (when creating a new appointment).

The appointment in this case gets shown in the calendar as starting at 13.10h, when it should be 10.10h (as I'm in Europe/Berlin).

How do I achieve that? I'm on Windows, TBird 142.0

Thx in advance, Cheers, Peter.

Hi: I don't know where this issue should go, admins pls decide. T-bird 140.3.1 esr 64b. W11p laptop, asus f17 w/i7 alder lake from around 2021. This is "important" cause I don't know where the issue lies (hardware speeds or software?).

-bbmde1@googlegroups.com

This has been an off & on issue for almost decades now. I really can't change the email specifics at all. This group started as a yahoo group, which had my email in hotmail.

The filter only works sometimes. Today is another instance of the filter not working. Sometimes the filter works, and then with a new t-bird update, it fails, but not always immediately.

The filter is to: move the "bbmde1" msgs to a folder still located in the hotmail account listed on my laptop as residing in the hotmail acct. But I've noted in the filter, that these sends from the bbmde owner, are from her gmail acct (not assoc w/yahoo/hotmail, for yrs).

The sometimes working workaround is to look at another t-bird acct on screen (like archives), then click back to "inbox" - unified folders, classic view - and sometimes (hence this email) the msgs go to the right acct/folder w/o further input, sometimes not. Sometimes I have to physically delete the msg.

Is this an "update" failure, that is, I must re-create the same filter, or create a new one to get the filter to work?

"Working" means, on opening, t-bird moves the "bbmde1" msgs to its own "bbmde" folder automatically, no needed input from me. T-bird doesn't leave these "bbmde1" msgs in "inbox."

Thank you.

I accidentally discovered that dozens of email messages for a specific period of time (about a week) are still on my ISP's email server. Thunderbird is configured to download all messages to my computer and then delete them from the ISP email server.

Prior to, and since, that period of time (for many years) this has typically worked. Now, however, nothing I do to Thunderbird will get those messages downloaded - I can only access them using my ISP's webmail portal.

Based on web research, I've tried deleting the popstate.dat file and the global-messages-db.sqlite file to try to get Thunderbird to rebuild its indexes and/or POP3 databases to no avail. I've also tried to flag the messages as "unread" using the ISP's webmail portal, again, without success.

Any suggestions?

When new emails come in the emails are highlighted (bold type) and also there is an orange diamond shaped icon in the email entry. In addition, the email folder name font will be blue to indicate there are new emails in the folder.

Mostly this works but some emails are filtered and, although there are new emails in the folder this blue status appears to be lost. Also, the orange diamond signifying "new" is lost too.

The lack of blue folder highlight is definitely the result of the emails losing their "new" status.

It is a little inconsistent until I find a pattern. All I know is the "new" status change is the result of filtering. None of the filters has any action other than "move to...". I never mark as read or even delete them.

Is there any way of checking the email status in the SQLite database?

Suddenly, my "main" comcast account is no longer accessible via Thunderbird. I have three accounts set up: two comcast and one gmail. The gmail and one comcast account appear to be all right. When I try to access the comcast one I call main, I receive the window shown in the uploaded image. It seems as if TB has somehow forgotten the way it accesses "main" accounts. I have verified that the "main" account is fine on the comcast server by logging into it. The question is if I remove the TB "main" account and recreate it, will I lose any messages? Is this likely to correct the issue?

I was using MS outlook and recently I could not connect. Apparently ATT made a change so that instead of a password you need a Secure email Key. Since I needed to make a change I thought I'd try Thunderbird mail, but I still need the KEY. After a number of efforts with the ATT AI and human support people I could not find where the Key is entered on ATT. Now I know this forum is about Thunderbird and not ATT, but there must be Thunderbird users that have ATT and have made a seccussful connection. There are a few ATT help pages that outline how to do this, but each time I look at my ATT profile I can not find where to enter the Secure Mail Key. Is there anyone that can help me with this? THanks Mike

Hello,

I've been using Thunderbird for years with the same setup: - Windows 10 64bit - Thunderbird always running, with 4 linked mailboxes (all POP), each checking for new mail every 5 minutes - The OS is typically running for a month or longer without restarting (I always hibernate my PC instead of shutting it down)

Everything was working just fine until recently. In the past month (or two, I'm not sure) Thunderbird just stopped receiving new e-mails on 3 different occasions. No error messages or anything, I always notice only when the sender calls/texts me, asking me about an e-mail I didn't get which is very annoying. When this happens, Thunderbird seems to work normally (I can browse all the mailboxes, move e-mails between folders etc.) but it just never downloads new messages from any of the mailboxes (not even when I hit F5 or the "Get messages" button - which normally displays a brief "Host contacted, sending login information..." message in the status bar but does absolutely nothing when this problem occurs). When I spot this problem and kill Thunderbird via task manager (closing normally doesn't help because it will still run in the background) and run it again, it immediately downloads the missing e-mails on startup and resumes working normally. But I'm getting really nervous about possibly missing important message(s) because Thunderbird is my primary (and for 99 % of time, the only) way of accessing my mailboxes (I only login to the web UI when I suspect Gmail or other web hosts to false flag an e-mail from legit sender as spam - but I typically only do this couple times a year).

My Thunderbird is (always) up to date (v 140.3.1esr).

Do you have any idea how to fix this, please? TIA! 🙏

I've used Thunderbird with the Owl add-on for Exchange/Outlook accounts for several years. Recently I've found when I open Thunderbird on my laptop, a tab opens for each account, apparently showing the Outlook web page for each account. This is great, but on the same version of Thunderbird (140.3.1esr) on my desktop, that doesn't happen. I can't see how to open these tabs there, or even how to reopen one of these tabs on my laptop, except from Go->Recently Closed Tabs. Am I missing something? What controls this behaviour?

I have number of email filters in use. The main set of filters are all configures to "Filters for Local Folders". As I have a Gmail account I have a set of filters set to "Filters for <gmail address>". The Gmail filters always move the emails to my Inbox folder. These are then picked up and moved by additional filters in the "Filters for Local Folders".

Previously this worked well. However, under the latest release 143.0.1 under Windows 10, there are emails left in the Inbox folder which should have been filtered within 10 minutes. Often they are there for many hours before being processed.

When I have unfiltered emails in the Inbox folder, to make sure the filters are correctly configured, I run the "Run Filters on Folder" option on the Inbox folder and it works perfectly.

How do I add a person's non-default email address to a mailing list?

I have a mailing list for our golf league, and in my address book many of those in the list have both a work and home email address, with one marked as the default. Some of our members would like messages sent to the list to go to both addresses. But I haven't found a way to add a person's non-default address to the list.

Do I need to create two address book entries for each of these people, one for each email address, and separately add them both to the list? That seems awfully klunky/inefficient to me.
