In a multilingual society like ours, it will inevitably surface in the health care sector. The services of an interpreter are often considered to break the impasse in this communication process. The communication problem between the two parties, the service provider and client/ patient, is often not simply a matter of language but societal factors of which the liaison interpreter should be aware of also plays a major role for effective extended communication. This article focuses on some of the problems in rendering an oral source text in multilingual and multicultural societies such as South Africa in which there are heterogeneous target audiences for interpreting. It is pointed out that interpreters in such societies must take into account the heterogeneity of the target audiences, or otherwise interpreting will only be symbolic gestures, empty of value, and thus not communicate the message intended. This practice is widely exercised in the open-source community and has become quite sophisticated. The "crowd" comes in various forms: customers, brand advocates, domain experts, passionate users and the "unwashed masses". All of these take the form of multilingual communities whose translation work may be integrated with existing translation workflows. However, there are still many misconceptions and myths about the outcomes of crowdsourcing when applied to translation. Three major phenomena in harnessing the power of the crowd for translation purposes have

Further analysis showed that only eight of these tests had been proven to reliably predict aptitude for interpreting. Second, online surveys and in-person, semi-structured interviews were utilised to gather the opinions of interpreter trainers and potential interpreting students. The trainers were asked, among other questions, which cognitive and personality traits they would wish to test for in prospective students. The students were also asked, among other questions, to rate on a Likert scale their confidence in successfully completing the different available aptitude tests. Through this data, it was found that there is a need for aptitude testing for the training of simultaneous interpreting students in South Africa, and that both trainers and students advocated for its use. Moreover, it was possible to determine the most effective aptitude tests from among those that are available and, furthermore, those that would be easy to administer and complete.

It studied the critical role of translation agencies in reframing and renegotiating the Islamic glossary through their own lens, which may be ideologically positioned. The paper further examined the English translations of the Arabic Islamic terms and concepts in the target texts which were published by the Washington-based advocacy group the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI). The data were collected manually from MEMRI’s online archive from the years 2013 to 2016. The data selection was based on a designed search that linked Daesh (ISIS) and any of its aliases with any of the Islamic terms and concepts which are repeatedly used in media narratives within the context of the ‘war on terror’ and ‘Islamic extremism’. The study employed Baker’s (2006) narrative-informed theory and Newmark’s (1988) translation procedures taxonomy to assist in the data analysis. The findings suggested that transference (transliteration) is a significant procedure used by MEMRI in justifying, legitimizing and normalizing particular narratives to the public and that translators are decisive participants in constituting and informing the social and political reality. The findings also demonstrated that narrativity features, relationality in particular, are significant tools in reconstructing reality in translation. Through translation, MEMRI draws upon the metanarrative of the ‘war on terror’ in promoting its ideologically laden agenda of terrorist Arabs and Muslims.

Much of our societal interaction is sustained and enriched by communication across linguistic bor... more Much of our societal interaction is sustained and enriched by communication across linguistic borders between fellow citizens, which is not necessarily due to the influx of people from less affluent countries. In contrast to the often figurative gesture of an interpreting service, interpreting does in fact take place at the coalface of everyday activities where a linguistic impasse occurs. Even though we subscribe to the notion of parity and esteem of our languages, the reality is, however, that our daily life is saturated by inconsistent power inequality and redress. Interpreting in such instances cannot be "a neutral and symmetrical exchange between two equal cultural forces" (Mezei et al., 2014:13). Interpreters-whether trained, poorly trained or untrained-have crucial and often unrecognised and unforeseen effects. Consequently, this article surpasses official multilingualism, the movement between the languages concerned and the analysis of linguistic transfer. Instead, the focus is on the social effects of interpreting. The practical aspects of interpreting and the examination of the societal context of interpreting are the central points in this article. A language barrier between patients and healthcare service providers is a major stumbling block for the provision of quality care to a culturally diverse society. Such an obstacle correlates negatively with patient satisfaction and studies have showed that patients experiencing language difficulties are less likely to return for follow-up consultations and also less likely to comply with prescriptions (Schlemmer, 2005:4). Against this backdrop, this article will take as its methodology revisiting instances of healthcare interpreting services. These instances will be contextualised and framed in terms of the society in which they occur. This will be done with reference to the event and effect (see Chesterman, 1998). The ultimate goal is to determine and deliberate on the event and effect in terms of the practical aspects of interpreting and the examination of the societal context of interpreting.

The impetus to embark on such an investigation arose after Members of Parliament (MPs) complained about the interpreting services. In seeking to determine why MPs made such claims, one has to explore the interpreting services rendered by Parliament's Interpreting Unit. Consequently, an investigation is undertaken into whether the simultaneous interpreters employed by the Parliament of South Africa possess the amalgam of skills and qualifications necessary for them to render interpreting services of a high standard. The methodology involves questionnaires distributed to MPs and to interpreters, interviews conducted with senior language practitioners (SLPs), and an analysis of recruitment interviews with interpreters. These methodological aspects of the study are employed in an attempt to chart the quality of the interpreting services.

In South Africa the major problem is not encountered with immigrants but with fellow South Africans. In 1993 already, Wood wrote that in South Africa it seems to be rare to have personnel dedicated to interpreting; that nurses usually have to fulfil this role and that the quality of the interpreting service varies substantially. Has anything changed since then? Lesch wrote in August 2005 that there is good reason to believe that the situation did not change dramatically, especially in the Western Cape. Why is it that in countries that are dealing with immigrant minorities much research, funding and official policy making has gone into this subject but in South Africa, where fellow South Africans can not even communicate, this problem is perceived to not attract the desired attention and outcome?
In a study by Elderkin-Thompson and Waitzkin (2001) it was concluded that errors occur frequently in interpretations provided by untrained nurse-interpreters (including paramedical or even non-medical ancillary staff and family members) during cross-language encounters, so complaints of many non-English (or non-Afrikaans) speaking patients may be misunderstood by their physicians. The limited use of professional interpreters and the concomitant heavy reliance on family members to interpret, highlight how language minority patients (i.e. language minority also in terms of power) who are not fluent in English or Afrikaans are disadvantaged.
Is it is excusable that in a country that focuses so much on the rights of the individual; the individual, in many instances, does not receive healthcare in a language he understand. This paper will explore the need of interpreters to facilitate the language barrier between South African medical professional staff and South African patients in the healthcare.

Amanda Lourens, me.

The existing Postgraduate Diploma in Translation was extended to make provision also for the training of interpreters. The increasing need for interpreters necessitated this move. Students thus have the option to specialise in either translation or interpreting or a combination of both. The SU is currently the only institution in the Western Cape where a formal qualification in translation and interpreting can be obtained. In the development of the course and the service on the campus, the municipal interpreting facilities were initially used for the practical sessions. In the meantime whisper interpreting systems were purchased and a fully equipped interpreting training venue has been established. The course has a theoretical as well as a practical component and it prepares the students for among others a career in translation, interpreting, editing, proofreading, etc. in different language combination. As part of their practical training, students also deliver an interpreting service to the campus community. What one has discovered in the recent past is that apart from training the interpreters, the clients and users of the service should also be skilled in this regard.
One of the immediate shortcomings for the students is the lack of readily available resource material. This publication is, among others an attempt to address this need. The essays in this publication are primarily the work of students in the interpreting course over the past few years and should be seen as an attempt to develop study material for future students.
This publication addresses inter alia the following themes:
• health care interpreting
• legal interpreting
• interpreting in African languages
• the multicultural nature of the South African society
• ethics in interpreting
• liaison interpreting
Summary

This publication is at aimed at making a study of community translation within the South African context whereby recognition will be given to the prominent role the reader of the translated text ought to play in the translation situation. The study is an attempt to address the power imbalances in the communication situation whereby the rightful role the community, i.e. the language impoverished within the linguistic situation, has to play, will be recognised.
The term community in this context does not so much refer to a specific geographical community, but rather to an approach to the translation process. In the process a distinction is drawn between parallel, nonparallel community translation and a community approach to translation. Each of these points of departure is examined. At the basis of community translation lies the premise that through effective communication, including an effective translation service, the language impoverished will be made aware of their rights, privileges and obligations within the society.
This is the first systematic study of community translation within the South African context. The necessity of it is more and more realised by translators and a structured research to community translation whereby an attempt is made to characterise the phenomenon has become inevitable. Consequently, a functional framework is used to examine the phenomenon. This theoretical data is illustrated by representative texts. In the publication an in-depth look is taken inter alia at relevant translation theories, the South African politics and translation practice. The importance of community translation and community interpreting is also motivated statistically and linguistically.
The ultimate goal is to establish norms for community translation. With the latter the gap between translation theory and translation practice is bridged. Gemeenskapsvertaling: die konteks van die ontvanger as normeringsbeginsel does not only want to be a theoretical work that stays irrelevant to the translation practice, but wants to develop translation norms which may be of use for the translation practice.
