FiberEUse is a €9.8 million research project funded by the European Union since June 2017 and col... more FiberEUse is a €9.8 million research project funded by the European Union since June 2017 and collaborating with 20 partners from 7 EU countries. It aims at developing different innovative solutions towards enhancing the profitability of glass and carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (GFRP and CFRP) recycling and reuse in added-value products and high-tech applications. There are three big tasks: (i) mechanical recycling of short GFRP, (ii) thermal recycling of long fibers (both GFRP and CFRP), (iii) inspection, repairing and remanufacturing for the end-of-life (EoL) GFRP/CFRP products. As one of the partners, the main objective of our work is to design a nondestructive testing (NDT) method for recycled/repaired/remanufactured CFRP products based on hyperspectral imagery (HSI). In this paper, we will introduce the use of hyperspectral imaging for erosion detection in different materials. Our previous work on metal corrosion estimation will be discussed first. Then, the idea of this work is carried out. The experimental setup of both works is illustrated and more details of our strategy are provided with future development direction.

Remanufacturing, the process of returning a used product to a like-new condition with a warranty ... more Remanufacturing, the process of returning a used product to a like-new condition with a warranty to match, is widely recognised as an environmentally preferable end of life strategy for many products, being both an energy and material saving solution. How the product was designed can have a significant effect on how easily it may be remanufactured, and it is from this understanding that the concept of ‘design for remanufacture’ (DfRem) has emerged. The aim of this research is gain an understanding of the organisational factors that enable the successful integration of DfRem considerations into a company design process, through a series of case studies in the mechanical/ electromechanical sector. This paper presents the findings from case studies of two companies currently remanufacturing their products- one that is involved in DfRem, one that is not. A comparison of the two case studies has revealed that factors such as customer demand, remanufacturer communication and business priorities may have a significant effect on DfRem integration.

It has been identified that healthcare systems in developed countries have a rapid turnover of medical imaging equipment (X-ray, MRI, CT scanners, etc.) due to the high rate of technological advancement. There is therefore a stockpile of used medical equipment that could still be of use in developing countries thanks to remanufacturing. The aim of this paper is to investigate the applicability of remanufacturing medical equipment with the intent of supplying said equipment to the countries that need it. The practice is particularly applicable to complex electromechanical and mechanical products which have cores that, when recovered, will have value added to them which is high relative to their market value and to their original cost. Because remanufacturing recovers a substantial fraction of the materials and value added to a product in its first manufacture, and because it can do this at low additional cost, the resulting products can be obtained at reduced price. Remanufacturing however is poorly understood because of its relative novelty in research terms. The mechanical performance of a composite is greatly related to the load transfer capability of t... more The mechanical performance of a composite is greatly related to the load transfer capability of the interface between the matrix and the reinforcing fibers, i.e. the fiber/matrix adhesion, which is enhanced by a surface treatment called sizing. The original sizing of reinforcing fibers is removed during recycling process, which is recognized to contribute in typical issues of recycled fibers, namely uneven fiber properties and poor fiber/matrix adhesion. Applying a new sizing, a process denoted here as resizing, can help mitigate the issues. Furthermore, the sizing has a major role in improving the processability of the fibers as it contributes to the distribution of the fibers in the matrix. Proper distribution, along with the fiber fraction, are highly important for the composite performance. These properties are ensured by proper compounding.
