Note: Phylogenetically this genus is sister to both Linnaeoideae and Morinoideae (Jacobs et al., 2011) and so the above species are only distantly related to Abelia, within which they have been circumscribed in the past. It is a basal lineage and can not yet be satisfactorily allocated to a subfamily.
